The Brooklyn Nets are up first as the Pistons seek to reach the postseason for the first time since the 2015-16 season. The Pistons will open the 2018-19 season with a visit from the Nets on Oct. 17 as the team begins their second season at LCA after moving from the Palace after nearly 30 seasons. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday evening the Pistons met with Dwane Casey to discuss the team's vacant head coaching job. The report states Casey interviewed in Michigan, with a Pistons contingent including new senior adviser Ed Stefanski and coaching search consultants Bernie Bickerstaff and Jim Lynam. Casey, 61, molded the Toronto Raptors into an Eastern Conference contender in seven seasons. He coached the Raptors to a 320-238 record, taking over the franchise in 2011. Under Casey, Toronto won four division titles, reached the playoffs the past five seasons and set a franchise record with 59 wins this season. Earlier Wednesday evening, the Free Press confirmed that the Pistons planned to interview TNT NBA analyst Kenny Smith. Now, a new person has emerged with significant local ties. A source confirmed for the Free Press that Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard will interview for the head coaching job. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news on Twitter. Howard, 45, was an international basketball star as a member of Michigan basketball's Fab Five. He played three seasons at U-M, helping the team reach consecutive Final Fours in 1992 and 1993. He left after his junior season for the 1994 NBA draft, when he was taken fifth overall by the Washington Bullets. But in recent years, since the unprecedented infusion of TV in 2016, guaranteed money has been available for picks taken in the first half of the second round. Wisconsin junior power forward Ethan Happ is aware of the trend. Happ, who worked out for the Detroit Pistons on Thursday, and his agent will have that in mind when they decide whether to keep his name in the draft as the Wednesday deadline looms.
