Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 5:00 PM EDT Mar 11, 2019 The Detroit Lions desperately needed a pass rusher, and on Monday they landed arguably the best available option at the position in free agency. The Lions agreed to terms on a five-year deal with New England Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers, according to ESPN. The contract is expected to be worth more than $80 million total. Flowers spent the last four seasons with the Patriots, where he developed into one of the most versatile pass rushers in the league. He played the 2015-17 seasons for Lions coach Matt Patricia, and last year had a career-high 7.5 sacks while helping the Patriots win the Super Bowl. Because of his familiarity with Patricia and the Lions’ defense, and because of the Lions’ positional need at defensive end – Ziggy Ansah will be an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday – Flowers was believed to be the Lions’ No. 1 target this offseason. He said during Super Bowl … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions expected to sign Trey Flowers to 5-year deal

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 11:27 PM EST Mar 4, 2019 Maybe all those theories about the Detroit Lions taking a quarterback with the No. 8 pick of the NFL draft aren't so far-fetched after all. According to NBC Sports, the Lions met with Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray at the combine last week, one of 60 formal interviews they had with draft prospects. A formal interview isn't necessarily a sign a team is interested in drafting a player. Teams use those interviews for a variety of reasons, and some request prospects before their pre-combine draft meetings even begin. But for a Lions front office that has both publicly backed Matthew Stafford as its starting quarterback and said it will consider all options at No. 8, including a quarterback, it's an interesting development nonetheless. [ Lions should draft Kyler Murray now that he measures up ] Asked about that dichotomy at the combine last week, why he'd consider taking a quarterback at … [Read more...] about Kyler Murray-Detroit Lions not as far-fetched as once thought
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Feb 16, 2019 I couldn’t bring myself to shake Glover Quin’s hand at the end of the season. I didn’t want to say goodbye, and I didn’t want to offend a proud player by presuming too much. The end of a professional athlete’s tenure with a team can be predictable. It either comes down to money or performance, or both. When it’s a virtual certainty a player is leaving, and I’ve appreciated his professionalism in dealing with reporters, I often shake his hand and thank him. I’ve done this with guys like Larry Warford and Nate Burleson, who were a pleasure to cover. But Quin is different. The veteran Detroit Lions safety, who was released Friday in order to save $6.25 million in salary cap money, has been an iron man on the field and in the locker room. I’ve never known a player who has personified professionalism, on and off the field, more than Quin. I didn’t have as … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions should put Glover Quin in ring of honor
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 3:10 PM EST Jan 10, 2019 Allen Park — It's all quiet on the offensive coordinator front, so it felt like a good time to do a Detroit Lions mailbag. What is a going on with the OC search? With no news or rumors about it, I am afraid they are just going to hire from within. — @kered316 Understandably, there are a lot of questions about the offensive coordinator opening, and I'm here to tell you I know almost nothing. That's a more difficult thing for me to write than you to read, trust me. The organization is in lockdown in regards to the process, and based on the reporting of others, including those at top national outlets, they're running into the same brick walls with their sources. And coaching is almost always a trickier topic to unearth information. The circles are tighter, the agent information isn't easily accessible, so unless there's a leak from the organization or those being interviewed, we … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions mailbag: What should be done at offensive coordinator?
