Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most watched television event in American history, tuned into by nearly half of all households and at peak time, more than 117,000,000 viewers. Ad rates were $3.5 million per 30 second spot, and while viewers debated who was better, an overweight Volkswagen obsessed dog or Clint Eastwood, the real beneficiary of all that airtime and all those viewers was the city of Indianapolis. “Ten years from now, I think we will look back on this one single day as the tipping point in tourism and perception for the city,” said Chris Gahl, Vice President of Marketing for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association. Several years ago when the city decided to go for the 2011 Game (it ended up with 2012), the bid process required $25 million in non-taxpayer funds, and several … [Read more...] about Super Bowl XLVI’s Real Winner? Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, the Canadian government made a landmark judgement that permitted four terminally ill Canadians the legal right to use magic mushrooms for end-of-life distress . The compassionate decree was the first of its kind in Canada since 1974 when magic mushrooms (containing the psychoactive substance psilocybin and known to ease end-of-life fears) were made illegal through the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act. One of those initial four people allowed to experiment with the newly legal mental health treatment using psilocybin was Laurie Brooks, who is also the central character of the documentary DOSED 2: The Trip of a Lifetime . The film follows Brooks, who in 2018 was diagnosed with late-stage terminal cancer and given 6 to 12 months to live, as she makes her way through a journey of acceptance of her own mortality, aided considerably by her psilocybin experiences. Growing up in a devoutly religious family — and … [Read more...] about Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care
DOH: Still no basis to allow boosters for kids ages 5 to 11
Children ages 5 to 11 are still not eligible for COVID-19 booster shots despite the resumption of in-person classes this month, as there is still no scientific evidence to support the need for booster doses for that age group, according to the Department of Health (DOH). “Until now, evidence is still incomplete, globally, regarding booster shots for 5 to 11 [years old]. For now, the [primary or] first two doses are still enough to protect them, especially against severe and critical infection,” Maria Rosario Vergeire, officer in charge of the DOH, said in a press briefing on Tuesday. She emphasized that focus should still be on ramping up inoculation for the primary doses, as she cited the latest DOH data that only 4.2 million, or about 40 percent, of the 5-11 age group have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “We’re still looking at 60 percent of this eligible age group who need to get vaccinated,” Vergeire said. “Let’s try to encourage mothers and legal guardians to have … [Read more...] about DOH: Still no basis to allow boosters for kids ages 5 to 11
How this Family-Owned Retailer Capitalized on RushTok
Last August, sorority rush at the University of Alabama exploded on TikTok with Greek letters, glitter, and teenage girls explaining their #OOTD, or outfit of the day. The videos generated millions of views as people watched new college students share carefully curated ensembles for each round of the recruitment process--name-dropping well-known brands like Shein, Target, Kendra Scott, Kate Spade, and Steve Madden. But one unfamiliar name kept getting mentioned: the Pants Store. Founded as a wholesale warehouse for pants in 1950 in Leeds, Alabama, the Pants Store is a third-generation family business run by Michael Gee, whose grandfather started the company out of the trunk of his car. Not being a TikTok user, Gee had no idea his business had gone viral on the platform last year. It was his then-14-year-old daughter who told him. In just one week, online sales soared by more than 600 percent year-over-year. Orders from out of state--particularly from other college … [Read more...] about How this Family-Owned Retailer Capitalized on RushTok
Swiss Tech Firm Bcomp’s Natural Flax Fiber Forms A Modern Rei Icon
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Rei was an inspiring project and a touch ahead of its time. In 2009, Japanese material firm Tras engaged the renowned product designer Keita Shimizu to create a chair that uniquely showcased its advanced carbon composite craftsmanship. The duo drew inspiration from Japan’s long history of composite work and lacquering, while the chair’s execution paid homage to the 1,300-year-old Ashura statue — a national treasure made entirely from composites. Tras has now engaged the Swiss tech materials innovator Bcomp to do something similar using its award-winning ampliTex natural fibers for a Rei chair with sustainability credentials. Bcomp’s fiber composite solution is derived from nature but rivals artificial carbon fiber in agility and toughness. Plus, it adds a novel technical aesthetic to the chair. As one of the country’s leading composite specialists, Tras works primarily on race cars and motorcycles. The Rei chair is … [Read more...] about Swiss Tech Firm Bcomp’s Natural Flax Fiber Forms A Modern Rei Icon

U.S. Natural Gas Electricity Efficiency is Always Improving
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin El Segundo Energy Center, a 560-MW combined cycle power plant in southern California. Source: ... [+] Combined Cycle Journal For electricity, the lifeblood of our modern world , efficiency has been installed as the 1st choice to reduce energy usage and related GHG emissions. Although renewables are ranked 2nd in this critical "loading order," 3rd ranked natural gas often gets deployed 1st because of greater availability and reliability. This demonstrates why since California first installed its Renewable Portfolio Standard in 2003, natural gas' share in the power generation mix has actually risen from 47% then to 61% today. Thanks to its clean burning, predictable, and flexible nature, natural gas has become an increasingly attractive fuel, boosted by a production boom and lower prices. Evolving technologies will continue to allow gas to play an expanding role in the clean generation of electricity. … [Read more...] about U.S. Natural Gas Electricity Efficiency is Always Improving
Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters
BIDEN DEEPLY UNPOPULAR WITH VOTERS… WSJ: Biden, Democrats Lose Ground on Key Issues, WSJ Poll Finds WASHINGTON—President Biden and his fellow Democrats have lost ground to Republicans on several of the issues most important to voters, a new Wall Street Journal poll finds, a troubling sign for the party seeking to extend its controlling majority of Congress for another two years. The new survey showed that 57% of voters remained unhappy with Mr. Biden’s job performance, despite favorable marks for the president’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a recent State of the Union speech, which provided him an opportunity to directly speak to millions of Americans. Just 42% said they approved of Mr. Biden’s performance in office, which was virtually unchanged from the previous Journal poll in mid-November. Meanwhile, Democratic advantages narrowed over Republicans on issues related to improving education and the Covid-19 response. A 16-percentage-point Democratic edge … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters
