Elephants, fish, white ants, and nocturnal beasts mark the stories featuring the country that will make their debut at the Utah-based film festival. Sundance platforms independent dramatic features and documentaries and brings some of the first international film showings of the calendar year. Titles that premiere there contend with the most troubling questions of the present moment. Indian filmmakers have regularly taken their work to the festival, particularly after the Sundance Institute began organising screenwriters and directors’ labs in the region. Why The Maldives Must Be Number One On Your Bucket List
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most people are clueless about the location of the Maldives (they’re below India and Sri Lanka in the middle of the Indian Ocean), but everyone knows they are a posh honeymoon/vacation spot where guests choose overwater bungalows or luxurious beach villas. Some just want to laze in the sun which shines more than 2,700 hours a year, while others go for the gourmet food, blissful spa treatments or water activities, enough to challenge even the most die-hard thalassophile (someone who loves the sea). The bad news is that the Maldives, one of the lowest countries in the world, are only three feet above sea level and greatly threatened by sea level rise, coastal storm surges, and associated flooding. Scientists say that given scenarios for global warming emissions, by the year 2100, the Maldives will experience a 1’5-foot sea level rise and lose 77 percent of the land area. We entered January with all sorts of promises and resolutions—and the enthusiasm of a thousand Labrador puppies. But alas, reality has already set in. Our calendars have filled up, and our eyes are still glazing over from staring at our screens for eight hours straight. So, how can we possibly find the time to think about and advance our careers, let alone help others, when the daily hustle-bustle of life gets in the way.
