Cleric Sadr wins Iraq vote, former PM Maliki close behind, officials say
(CNN) Shia Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's party was the biggest winner in an Iraqi election on Monday, increasing the number of seats he holds in parliament, according to initial results, officials and a spokesperson for the Sadrist Movement. Former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki looked set to have the next largest win among Shia parties, initial results showed. Iraq's Shia groups have dominated governments and government formation since the US-led invasion of 2003 that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein and catapulted the Shia majority and the Kurds to power. Sunday's election was held several months early, in response to mass protests in 2019 that toppled a government and showed widespread anger against political leaders whom many Iraqis say have enriched themselves at the expense of the country. But a record low turnout suggested that a vote billed as a chance to wrest control from the ruling elite would do little to dislodge sectarian … [Read more...] about Cleric Sadr wins Iraq vote, former PM Maliki close behind, officials say

Even Democrats Now Agree That The Government Should Not Fund Crack Pipes
The House of Representatives passed by a wide margin on Wednesday legislation that includes a partial ban on federally-funded crack and meth pipes, despite the Biden administration’s insistence that such a ban is unnecessary. The Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act of 2022 , introduced by Democratic New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, primarily funds block grants for community wellness programs targeting mental illness and drug abuse. However, the bill also includes a provision that prohibits the funds from being “used to purchase, procure, or distribute pipes or cylindrical objects intended to be used to smoke or inhale illegal scheduled substances.” The legislation passed 402-20, with 184 Republicans and 218 Democrats voting in favor. All 2o “no” votes came from Republicans. Iraq faces deadlock after ‘West-friendly’ candidate suspended
Abu Dhabi (CNN) He's arguably Iraq's best-known face abroad. Hoshyar Zebari, a Kurd, was the country's longest-serving foreign minister, often hobnobbing with Western diplomats and journalists, but also cultivating strong ties with neighboring Arab states to make his country's case. But a bid to crown his political career with a run for the presidency faced a major hurdle last week when Iraq's federal court suspended his candidacy due to past corruption charges, causing an election delay that risks exacerbating existing factional divisions. The presidential election was indefinitely postponed on Monday, stalling the already delayed formation of a new government. The results of October's parliamentary vote, in which pro-Iran factions were dealt a significant loss, were only confirmed in December due to political bickering over the results. A new president would be tasked with asking the winning bloc to form a government. The suspension was a blow to the … [Read more...] about Iraq faces deadlock after ‘West-friendly’ candidate suspended

Roe V. Wade Has Completely Transformed The Midterms – Here’s How
The abortion debate has become a major focus in the midterms after a leaked draft decision from the Supreme Court indicated Roe v. Wade will be overturned. “[Democrats are] gonna use every single dirty trick in the book, so I do think that we should be a little more on the offensive,” Carson Steelman, press secretary for Heritage Action, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. Multiple Republicans in battleground states have emphasized that little will change in their state if Roe was thrown out, while Democrats have argued the opposite. Both Republicans and Democrats have been forced to reconfigure their election strategies only six months before the midterms due to the unprecedented leak from the Supreme Court indicating Roe v. Wade will be overturned. Many Democrats have made clear they intend to hammer opponents across the aisle on the implications of Roe being overturned and while Republicans have celebrated the decision, several have largely focused on the leak … [Read more...] about Roe V.
