At a UPS operating center in midtown Manhattan, two cargo delivery bikes will soon begin rolling out of a driveway in the morning a few hours before the usual delivery trucks begin their routes. The company is part of a new six-month pilot program in New York City that will test how well cargo bikes, with electric “pedal assist” for couriers, can potentially help relieve traffic by replacing some delivery trucks. A similar system is already in use in several other cities around the world: New York can learn from what’s working elsewhere to consider how the pilot could scale up. advertisement advertisement In European cities, UPS typically brings a shipping container from a depot to a spot in the city center early in the morning, and couriers on bikes take loads of deliveries to nearby neighborhoods. Since the cargo bikes can’t carry as much as a truck, the cyclists have to make multiple trips; the system only makes economic sense in congested areas … [Read more...] about What will make cargo bike package delivery succeed in New York?
On December 6, India woke up to the news that the accused in the Hyderabad rape-and-murder case were killed in an early-morning ‘encounter’ with the police. The story goes that the accused, who were in police custody, were being taken to the crime site to reconstruct the scene, where they attempted to break free and attacked the cops. The cops, of course, fired back in self-defence leading to the demise of all the four rape accused. The encounter seems to have led to a collective outburst of joy for a large part of the society — social and mainstream news media have trended the hashtag ‘#JusticeForDisha’ even as the cops have been garlanded by the public.Close Implicit in such jubilation is the fact that we as a society are condoning, even encouraging extra-judicial killings, in which cops play judge, jury and executioner. related news Hyderabad encounter horrifying, cannot kill people because you want to: Maneka Gandhi Insight18 | All you need to … [Read more...] about Society | Tough questions the Hyderabad encounter poses
2015 was the year we continued to see new types of transportation, including self-driving cars and buses, all kinds of drones, and even futuristic trains, like Elon Musk’s Hyperloop. advertisement advertisement It was also when we started to see transport become better integrated. Bike-share companies looked to become part of wider transit systems (rather than just standalone services). Uber started to share data with cities, auguring a time when ride-sharing become part of public networks. And, we saw plenty of new apps and sites allowing people to move more seamlessly between modes. For any given journey, we can now understand the best way to get from A to B. There were some failures as well. Leap Transit, an upmarket private bus service in San Francisco, went out of business (not that anyone minded too much). Generally things got better. As we gather and crunch data more effectively, we should be able to move more quickly and with less hassle, even as cities become … [Read more...] about Bike Sharing, Driverless Cars, And Hyperloops: 2015 In Transportation
Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) have been under severe pressure for over a year, but the sector now appears ripe for a turnaround. Most NBFCs had a decent quarter amid a challenging environment as they reported steady net interest margins (NIMs) despite an increase in borrowing costs."A lot of pieces are falling in place for NBFCs. Stronger liability profile supported by more diversified, granular and longer duration bank borrowings, deposits and securitisation along with the lower cost of borrowing and normalisation of credit spreads, and a significant improvement in overall system liquidity will aid in a return of confidence to the sector," said JM Financial in a report on December 2.Close With lower valuations, JM Financial believes the sector is attractively placed in the context of improving liquidity conditions, lower funding costs and lower credit spreads going ahead. related news This stock has gained 77% in the last 14 consecutive sessions Shakti Pumps shares … [Read more...] about 5 NBFC stocks brokerages recommend for your basket as the sector looks for turnaround
There are two types of people in this world, or at least in my New York City neighborhood: Those who get bagels from David’s, and those who get bagels from Bagel Boss. advertisement advertisement Both bagel shops sit on one side of First Avenue between 15th and 16th streets. They’re just about next door. So if you live within a six-block radius of that stretch of sidewalk, chances are you’ve got an opinion–in some circles, they’re the House Lanniser and House Stark of the local bagel world. You wouldn’t know it just by looking, though. The shops are nearly identical. Sure, you’ll hear people talk about David’s being fluffier or Bagel Boss tasting fresher, but I don’t buy it. There’s only one substantive difference: Bagel Boss is kosher. If you want a bacon, egg, and cheese , you’re going to David’s. Anything else, and you’re good at either spot. I’ve even brought friends who … [Read more...] about What Every Startup Needs To Know About The Psychology Of Choice
