Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Planting more trees in cities could cut the number of people dying from high temperatures in summer, according to a study published in the Lancet medical journal on Tuesday, a strategy that could help mitigate the effects of climate change as it continues to drive temperatures upwards. Key Facts Cities experience much warmer temperatures than the rural areas surrounding them—a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect—a result of vegetation and green spaces being replaced with structures like roads and buildings that absorb heat. The effect is particularly problematic in summer, when temperatures can soar to dangerous levels and more people die of heat-related causes, but can be tackled by planting more trees, researchers suggest. An analysis of mortality data from some 57 million people living in 93 European cities in the summer of 2015—the most recent year for which data is … [Read more...] about Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds
Kiszla: Gary Kubiak makes a brave move, refusing to love Broncos to death
The NFL is Gary Kubiak ’s life. He refused to let it be the death of him. “You can’t kill yourself over this game,” Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said Sunday. “You don’t want to die being a coach. You don’t want to die like that.” Saying goodbye to a job and team he loves was painful, as uncomfortable as the arms crossed across Kubiak’s chest, as if his heart might burst, after the Broncos beat Oakland 24-6. In his heart, however, Kubiak knew he had to say goodbye, because as much as he loves the Broncos, he loves his wife and family more. The team was never the same from the moment Kubiak was hauled away from the stadium in an ambulance after a loss to Atlanta in October. He suffered a mini-stroke while coach of the Texans in 2013, and the second health scare was too much to bear. He wore the stress in his face, yet refused to quit until this 9-7 season was done. “In all honesty, I struggled this year,” admitted Kubiak, holding back tears. Winter weather cancels flights, leads to death in Texas
By PAUL J. WEBER and JEFF MARTIN AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Winter weather brought ice to a wide swath of the United States on Tuesday, causing the cancellation of more than 1,600 flights nationwide, bringing traffic to a standstill on an interstate through Arkansas and knocking out power to thousands of Texans. As the ice storm advanced eastward on Tuesday, watches and warnings stretched from the western heel of Texas all the way to West Virginia. Several rounds of mixed precipitation — including freezing rain and sleet — were in store for many areas through Wednesday, meaning some regions could be hit multiple times, the federal Weather Prediction Center warned. Numerous auto collisions were reported in Austin, Texas, with at least one fatality according to the Austin Fire Department. In Travis County, Texas, which includes Austin, police and sheriff’s deputies have been responding to new crashes about every three minutes since 8 a.m., according to the Austin-Travis County Traffic … [Read more...] about Winter weather cancels flights, leads to death in Texas

New Evidence That Ultra-Processed Foods May Increase Cancer Risk
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A study funded by the World Cancer Research Fund and Cancer Research UK and published in eClinicalMedicine , a Lancet open access clinical journal, provides new evidence of a link between ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and an increased risk of developing cancer. A team from Imperial College London used UK Biobank data to assess the diets of 197,426 people between the ages of 40 and 69, who completed 24-hour dietary recalls during a three-year period. Ultra Processed Food consumption was expressed as a percentage of total food intake in grams per day and was assessed against the risk of developing and/or dying from 34 different types of cancer over a period of 10-years. After the researchers adjusted for socio-demographic factors, physical activity, smoking status, and dietary factors, it was found that a 10% increase in consumption of ultra-processed food was linked to a 2% increase in being diagnosed with any cancer and … [Read more...] about New Evidence That Ultra-Processed Foods May Increase Cancer Risk
World’s oldest person dies at 118 in France
In 2021, Lucile Randon survived catching COVID-19, which infected 81 residents of her nursing home. The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, has died aged 118, a spokesman told AFP on Tuesday. Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said. "There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home, told AFP. The sister was long feted as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 last year left her the longest-lived person on Earth. Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status in April 2022. Read More Randon was born in the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France had only been staged once. The seven moons of Booker winner Shehan Karunatilaka
Shehan Karunatilaka Ah, where do I begin now? Perhaps, some arrack will help me. No, that’ll only help Shehan Karunatilaka’s protagonists and not this essay that I’m writing. Whether it’s WG Karunasena from Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew (2010), or Maali Almeida from the recent Booker winner The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida (2022, Penguin India, Rs 399, 400 pages), I’ve found out that it’s mostly liquor that keeps them happy. Suffice it to say that reading Karunatilaka’s works is akin to sharing a table at a dive bar with strangers whose desires align with yours. Loud conversations and louder cries for attention are, therefore, inevitable. And in each of his books, dark humour is pinned to the wall of his prose. This brilliant technique allows him to drive through the hard and sticky parts of his country’s descent. Sri Lanka, which has often been described as an island that looks like a teardrop, cannot erase its past. It’s a burden that several generations will have … [Read more...] about The seven moons of Booker winner Shehan Karunatilaka
