Courtesy Collage Architects/Lake West Development A plan to turn the Dairy Queen headquarters, which will soon have a lot of space, and surrounding 12 acres of land in Edina into a multifamily housing development was rejected this week by city officials. Developer Lake West Development LLC had proposed for the building, located at 7505 Metro Boulevard, and the rest of the surrounding area to be the site of potentially more than 600 housing units. The first phase was supposed to include the existing Dairy Queen office building, which would have been used for 135 units of affordable housing apartments, and a new 150-unit building. Future phases could have included remodeling an existing office building and construction of two other buildings. Overall, there would have been about 50 units of housing per acre with 27 to 33 percent of the units dedicated as affordable housing. Dairy Farmers of America has struck a deal to acquire Agropur’s facility in Maplewood With the acquisition, which must first meet closing conditions, the farmer’s cooperative will expand its shelf-life capabilities and add aseptic processing to its portfolio. The Rice Street facility manufactures extended-life and aseptic dairy products for grocery store chains and organic milk brands. Aseptic products are shelf-stable. The roughly 200 employees who work at the facility will keep their jobs and management will continue to oversee daily operations, officials said Monday. “This acquisition offers an opportunity to grow our customer base while strengthening our processing capabilities for existing customers and diversifies our product portfolio,” said Pat Panko, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Dairy Farmers of America’s Fluid Milk and Ice Cream Division. A spill of hazardous material at a Wawa dairy plant in Middletown, Delaware County, resulted in a hazmat team being called to the scene early Monday morning. Around 2:45 a.m. crews were responded to a reported acid spill in the back of the plant, Patch reported. The plant is located at 1300 block of West Baltimore Pike.According to KYW, a 55-gallon drum began leaking cleaning solution. The chemical is typically used to clean the plant's containers through which milk is processed, and though a hazmat team and the police department appeared at the scene, the incident was described as a minor one.A few hours after the leak broke out, the plant reported that the spill did not contaminate any food or products, nor did it cause an evacuation of the plant.
