One cannabis vendor in central Thailand is pretty happy about Thailand’s new cannabis laws. The vendor, 53 year old Khamphai, is bringing good vibes to local stoners in Ang Thong province, and over 1,000 baht a day to herself. Every day, Khampai rolls up to the Suwaphan Agricultural Market with her cart full of small cannabis plants. The market is in Ang Thong’s main city district, crowded with eager buyers. For the past 3 days, she has been able to to sell 100-200 plants for 150-180 baht each, raking in over a thousand baht each day. Khamphai buys the Cannabis plants from Thailand’s northeast province of Buriram, bringing them back down to Ang Thong to earn those bucks. Khamphai and her vendor have reportedly caused quite a stir at the market, since this is the first time many market-goers have seen someone openly selling the ‘happy plant’. But apparently, enough customers have grown fond of Khamphai’s business, because now she’s rolling in the dough. While 1,000 baht a day … [Read more...] about Cannabis vendor in central Thailand is making bank

Update on Chikungunya cases in Thailand
“Chikungunya Virus is an arbovirus of the alphavirus genus, transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, same way Dengue is spread.” The Bureau of Epidemiology, along with the Thailand Health Ministry, are reporting 3,379 chikungunya cases in 23 provinces up to May 13 this year. Phuket, Songkla and Ranong have been the most affected by the mosquito borne viral disease. The good news, health officials report the numbers are declining. The word, Chikungunya, translates to “that which bends up”, based on the stooped position of patients during the rheumatic symptoms of the disease. In humans bitten by an infected mosquito, the disease symptoms usually appear after an incubation period of three to seven days. Chikungunya can cause acute, sub-acute, and chronic disease. In acute disease, symptoms develop abruptly and include high fever, headache, myalgia and arthralgia (predominantly in limbs and large joints). ‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’
PETALING JAYA: An elderly care service association is urging the government to allow temporary entry of foreign workers trained in nursing and caregiving to address the shortage of such staff at elderly care homes nationwide. It says currently, there was an inadequate supply of locals to undertake the job as many of the previous caregivers consisted of nurses awaiting placements. They have since been called to service by government and private hospitals to handle the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia. Similarly, many locals are not interested in these jobs as they are akin to other 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs, it said. Association for Residential Aged Care Operators (Agecope) president Delren Terrence Douglas said foreign workers trained in caregiving or nursing could be temporarily allowed to address the shortage faced by the industry. “For my home in Kedah, we had eight nurses prior to the pandemic but the number has since dwindled to only two for a home with 42 … [Read more...] about ‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’
Covid-19: Sabah’s cases on the rise for 5th consecutive day
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Covid-19 cases continue to rise for the fifth day running, with 192 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours. The cases detected on Saturday (June 25) are 22 more compared to the numbers the previous day. "For the record, the infections in the past five days spiked from 76 cases (on June 20) to 192 cases today," said Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun in a statement on Saturday. "The high daily cases are due to rising number of infections in heavily populated areas like Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Sandakan. "(For instance) the cases in the state capital today went up by 11 cases (to 74 cases) while the infections in the neighbouring Penampang district increased by 30 cases (to 59 cases) from yesterday," he added. Ironically, Masidi said, more districts in Sabah recorded a drop in cases, with 12 districts recording fewer cases than yesterday compared to eight districts that detected an increase in infections. He added the number of … [Read more...] about Covid-19: Sabah’s cases on the rise for 5th consecutive day
No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
PETALING JAYA: You buy a bottle of your favourite fruit juice, slurp it down and then throw it into the nearest bin. The whole process may just take 10 minutes – but that glass bottle could be here for 1,000,000 more years. Glass is not being recycled, at least not in a major way. ALSO READ: No market for recycled glass bottles Most recyclers are business-driven and only focus on materials that give them the most returns, like plastic and paper. Environment and waste management specialist Dr Theng Lee Chong said the reason plastic is favoured over glass is because it can fetch a better price in terms of reselling and production cost. “Other factors that turn recyclers off from glass are that it takes up more space, weighs more and is harder to handle in terms of transportation and logistics. “Not all types of glass can be recycled. Bulbs, sheet glass, windshields and car accessories as well as windows cannot be recycled because some may contain hazardous material like … [Read more...] about No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
Street food paradise may be lost
Reports by IMRAN HILMY, FATIMAH ZAINAL and SHARON LING GEORGE TOWN: There’s trouble brewing in food paradise. Penang’s hawkers are being forced to close shop, no thanks to the acute foreign worker shortage. The Penang government’s decision in 2014 to bar foreign workers from working as cooks in hawker stalls has only added to the problem. Several food complexes and coffeeshops have put up banners asking hawkers to set up stalls at their premises but there have been few takers as hawkers cannot find workers to help them. “Without any foreign workers, I can’t operate my stall as I have to do the marketing, cooking, preparation and serving all by myself,” said TH Ang, a hawker selling noodles. “It’s hard to find locals to do this work. I used to have two female foreign workers to help me before the pandemic. They have gone back and cannot return. “Back then, they served customers and helped to wash plates while I did the cooking.” Penang has long been known as a hawker … [Read more...] about Street food paradise may be lost
