Revenue and print circulation have shrunk in recent years, even as it provided critical coverage of health issues in public housing and for first responders after the Sept. 11 attacks. Editor-in-chief Jim Rich was included in the layoffs, and tweeted an ominous message early Monday morning, saying today was a good day “if you hate democracy”. That’s what it feels like today in the wake of the publisher’s decision to lay off half the editorial staff at the storied tabloid, leaving a skeleton crew to run a newspaper that covers national news, issues, and events impacting the biggest city in the country. The rumors started circulating last week, and on Sunday, Tronc sent an email to staffers prepping them for “an important message from Grant Whitmore,” Tronc’s eastern region general manager. Daily News staff was notified of the cuts in an email sent by the company's human resources department that also detailed a new direction for the paper, with an increased focus on breaking news with particular attention paid to crime, civil justice and public responsibility. It will still cover local news and sports, the email said. Journalists for the newspaper were called to a 9 a.m. meeting and then told to wait for the email, which notified them of the cuts and the paper's new direction. The email also notified employees that editor-in-chief Jim Rich and managing editor Kristen Lee were among those parting ways with the company.
