Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This question, posed recently to the Quora web site, elicited some 40 answers from Quora’s roster of “experts”, of which I am one. Most answers fell into one of two categories. One group said “yes” –based mainly on the diverse (and mostly non-verifiable) benefits of being out of debt. The second said “it depends” – based mainly on the relationship between the interest rate being paid on the mortgage and the rate being earned on the financial assets that would be used to repay the mortgage. I was in the second group, but I appended my answer with a warning that the question deserves much greater thought than any of the experts, including me, had given it. This article is a response to that challenge. What Is the Objective? A retirement plan has two possible objectives. The objective that applies to every case is having enough spendable funds to meet anticipated needs. A second objective, relevant only to some retirees, … [Read more...] about If You Still Have A Mortgage, Should You Pay It Off At Retirement?

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Having heard this many times, I know it’s common for folks to say, “I’d off myself” or “I’d check out”. There seems to be a belief that if we ever did develop this sad disease, we would find a way to eliminate ourselves from it. That we would never want to lose our minds is probably a universal desire. But is it realistic that we could just stop living if we did develop dementia? The truth is that dementia in any form, Alzheimer’s disease being the most common, has a gradual onset. People who are in the early stages of the disease often do not realize that they have any impairment at all. “I feel fine” they say. Physically, they may be otherwise fine, but their brains are not. And reasoning, planning, and looking ahead are functions of that brain that is losing ground. There is no clear marker for when one can definitely say, this is the moment I got dementia. It doesn’t work that way. A frequent reason people seek advice … [Read more...] about “If I Ever Got Dementia, I’d Be Outta Here”
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Denmark’s center of power for hundreds of years, Viborg served as a key trading post for the Jutland peninsula, a spiritual center, a crowning place for Kings and a decision-making stronghold. Although Viborg’s status all but disappeared when absolute monarchy was introduced in 1660, the city retains many historic buildings that recall Viborg’s importance long ago. While not somewhere to base an entire vacation, there are several things to do in Viborg that make it a good addition to a Denmark road trip, long-distance cycling trip or an easy day trip from Aarhus . Viborg’s Cathedral Quarter At the height of Viborg’s importance, bishops and noblemen ordered the construction of several monumental buildings across the city. The distinctive two-towered cathedral is the best known but the whole area is worth a visit even during the briefest stop in the city. Although originally built in 1140, most of Viborg … [Read more...] about Discover The Medieval Charms Of Viborg, Denmark
People who are affected by infertility do have options to try, but in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the diagnostics, medication, surgery, and other treatments can be expensive. In some cases, medical insurance will cover many of the costs, but in other cases it won't. On a global scale, 15% of reproductive-aged couples are impacted by infertility around the world, according to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates. The majority of people affected by infertility (including men, women, LGBTQ couples, and single people), will pay out-of-pocket . Depending on the treatment, out-of-pocket costs can easily reach thousands of dollars. Some states have laws that require insurance companies to cover treatment for infertility, but the laws vary. Here, we'll explain how state laws affect insurance coverage for fertility treatment in more detail. Key Takeaways Mandatory insurance coverage for fertility treatment and medication is not widespread in the U.S. Many insurers do … [Read more...] about States Laws & Insurance Coverage for Fertility Treatments & Medication
Faithfuls wearing protective masks at a church in Amman, Jordan. (File image: Reuters) Like it or not, the choose-your-own-adventure period of the pandemic is upon us. Mask mandates have fallen. Some free testing sites have closed. Whatever parts of the United States were still trying to collectively quell the pandemic have largely turned their focus away from communitywide advice. Now, even as case numbers begin to climb again and more infections go unreported, the onus has fallen on individual Americans to decide how much risk they and their neighbors face from the coronavirus — and what, if anything, to do about it. For many people, the threats posed by COVID have eased dramatically over the two years of the pandemic. Vaccines slash the risk of being hospitalized or dying. Powerful new antiviral pills can help keep vulnerable people from deteriorating. But not all Americans can count on the same protection. Millions of people with weakened immune systems do not … [Read more...] about Is COVID more dangerous than driving? How scientists are parsing COVID risks
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The concepts of cannabis use in our society are still confusing, as Federal law conflicts with state laws. 37 states have legalized the use of cannabis for medical use, and more are steadily legalizing it for recreational use as well. Federal law still classifies cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, the same as heroin. States allow its medical use for a variety of conditions that might otherwise be treated with opioids and other drugs. But the legalization of cannabis does not answer the question of how it could help aging adults with dementia-related agitated behaviors. Some elders with dementia become angry, restless, combative and even violent. People with certain dementias are more likely than others to demonstrate these very difficult behaviors. Families are under serious distress in caring for their loved ones with these behaviors. The aging parent becomes unrecognizable in their actions toward others. Physicians typically … [Read more...] about Can Cannabis Help Manage Dementia-Related Agitation?
You can have a pension and still contribute to a 401(k)—and an IRA—to take charge of your retirement. If you have a defined benefit pension plan at work, you have nothing to worry about, right? Maybe not. While pensions used to be a staple ingredient in the recipe of retirement planning, fewer companies today offer them. What's more, the benefits aren't as reliable as they used to be . Now is a good time to start thinking about where your pension fits into your overall plan for retirement. It’s dangerous to rely on any pension—even a generous one—to cover all your retirement needs. Key Takeaways A pension provides a fixed monthly benefit upon retirement for the rest of your life. 401(k)s and IRAs provide income in retirement, too. But the amount depends on how much you contribute and how well your investments perform. A good retirement strategy is to contribute to a variety of retirement investments, including 401(k)s and IRAs—even if you already have a pension. … [Read more...] about Can You Have a Pension and a 401(k)?

A survey conducted by the Department of Health Service Support revealed that Thai people are a bit more relaxed about Covid, though still not as relaxed as many parts of the world. These results came from comparing the data from the first round of surveys conducted between March 5 to 31 with 113,847 respondents, and the latest round between July 1 to 20 with 28,487 respondents. The survey revealed that Thai people were about 4% more likely to engage in higher-risk activities than previously while there is an 11% decline in mask-wearing. The department believes the survey indicates Thai people are engaging in more physical contact due to relaxed social distancing and masking measures. Despite the latest findings, the Ministry of Public Health still encourages the general public to observe Covid safety protocol. Just over 771% of Thailand’s population has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus with two shots while about 45% have had at least one booster dose … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Thais more relaxed about Covid-19
Somewhere between the start of the Great Recession of 2007 and the Age of the Unicorn , America ushered in the era of the freelance economy. Today, the workers powering our most innovative companies are increasingly likely to be independent contractors, rather than W2 employees. Last year, the number of freelancers in the United States grew by 700,000 people , and comprised a full 34 percent of the workforce. As you work to scale your own business, you'll find that freelancers can be an essential, integral part of that process. Having a flexible, agile workforce allows you to scale up more quickly--without taking on the risk of hiring full-time staffers right away. What's not so obvious is that freelancers need (and yes, crave!) great leadership to inspire, motivate, and challenge them. At Masthead Media (where a large percentage of our team members are 1099 contributors) we've learned that proactively managing freelancers in an empowering, mutually … [Read more...] about 6 Secrets for Transforming Freelancers into Insanely Productive (and Loyal!)
