Government to focus on putting LCS project back on track, says Hishammuddin
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): The government will focus on putting the littoral combat ship (LCS) project back on track as decided by the Cabinet, said Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein in a post on Facebook. He said negotiations with vendors, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and banks are being carried out. Hishammuddin said this in relation to the procurement of the LCS which became controversial following the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report revealing that not a single ship had been completed even though the project's contract, worth RM6.083 billion, stipulated that five of the six ships should be completed and handed over by August 2022. In the posting, Hishammuddin said his team has taken media personnel to Boustead Naval Shipyard in Lumut, Perak on Saturday (Aug 13) to take a look at the external and internal conditions of the LCS which is under construction. "I never get tired of asserting many times that the Defence … [Read more...] about Government to focus on putting LCS project back on track, says Hishammuddin
Why are some people left-handed? MRI brain scans are finally revealing an answer
As one of many left-handed people on staff here at Fast Company , I was tempted to spend International Left-Handers Day scrolling through the #LeftHandedProblems hashtag on TikTok, which, I was not surprised to learn, includes more than 43 million videos of ink-smudged lefties banging into doors, playing their guitars upside-down, and failing miserably with the ice-cream scooper. Instead, I decided it might be more interesting to look into exactly why an estimated 10% of the global population is cursed— er , blessed with—the trait of left-handedness. advertisement advertisement It turns out, there is some relatively new research on that front, thanks to the miracle of MRI technology and a massive repository of brain scans. Late last year, a study led by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics identified precisely where left-handedness shows up in the human brain. Or, more specifically, the study revealed how the brains of left-handed … [Read more...] about Why are some people left-handed? MRI brain scans are finally revealing an answer

MANILA, Philippines — Four persons were killed last Thursday in a “rido” — a clan war — between two Moro groups in Pikit town in South Cotabato, according to a Philippine Army statement issued on Saturday. Bucking The Trend, One Small African Region Is Taking Sides With Taiwan
As China’s economic ties to Africa entrench further, one small, semi-autonomous African region is resisting Chinese advances in a move that mirrors Taiwan’s efforts to maintain autonomy from China, according to The Wall Street Journal. Somaliland , one of two remaining African political regions with formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, broke away from Somalia over 30 years ago but has yet to achieve recognition as an independent state at the United Nations, according to the WSJ. Beijing offered to build infrastructure projects in Somaliland if it would distance itself from Taiwan, but Somaliland refused, instead sending a delegation to Taiwan in February. Somaliland is “open to all bilateral relations we can have with any country, but it has to be unconditional, no strings attached,” Essa Kayd, Somaliland’s foreign minister, told the WSJ. “We’re not going to allow anyone to dictate who we can have a relationship with.” Taiwanese companies now have greater … [Read more...] about Bucking The Trend, One Small African Region Is Taking Sides With Taiwan
President Obama Is Backing The Wrong Partners In Somalia
Two years ago, President Obama cited “impressive security and political gains in Somalia” to support his decision to grant diplomatic recognition for the fragile government of Somalia. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the diplomatic recognition of the President Hassan Mohamud’s government, the first Somali government America recognized since 1991, a “ new chapter” between the two countries. Last month, Obama nominated a career diplomat Katherine Dhanani to serve as the new U.S. ambassador to Somalia, since 1991, after dictator Siad Barre was ousted. But the new ambassador will not be posted in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, where a climate of insecurity prevails. It has been more than two years since President Mohamud was selected as the leader of Somalia. But Mohamud’s government did little to contribute peace, security and political reconciliation for the war torn country. His government is struggling to govern, and its authority is not beyond Mogadishu, where … [Read more...] about President Obama Is Backing The Wrong Partners In Somalia
