That reusable Trader Joe’s bag? It’s rescuing an Indian industry
Much of the hope for a revival of India’s jute industry rests on bans on single-use plastics that dozens of countries, including India, have enacted in recent years (Representative Image) Sameer Yasir NADIA, India — When shoppers in places like America take a woven reusable bag to the store, they aren’t just saving the planet. They are reviving a storied industry thousands of miles away in India. Jute, a coarse fibre used to make fabrics like burlap, has been cultivated for centuries in the warm and humid climate of the Ganges Delta. Some of India’s jute factories have been in operation for more than a century, and today the country is the world’s largest producer. But in recent decades, the industry has struggled as less expensive synthetic substitutes have flooded the market. Farmers turned to other crops, cheap labour moved elsewhere and mills deteriorated from lack of investment. Now, though, what had been jute’s weakness is its potential strength. As much of the … [Read more...] about That reusable Trader Joe’s bag? It’s rescuing an Indian industry
‘Finer’ plan to fight air pollution to come into force from Oct 1
Air pollution in Delhi (Image: Reuters) A ’finer’ Graded Response Action Plan — a set of anti-air pollution measures followed in the national capital and its vicinity according to the severity of the situation — will come into from October 1 and environment experts believe advance action this year will lead to lesser incidences of severe pollution. Earlier, GRAP would come into effect from October 15. Earlier, GRAP would come into effect from October 15. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a statutory body established in August 2021, for management of air quality in Delhi-NCR decided to implement GRAP early, considering suggestions from the public and experts that advance action can prevent drastic deterioration in air quality. Under the revised GRAP, curbs can be imposed on polluting activities up to three days in advance based on forecasts. Earlier, the authorities would implement the measures only after the PM2.5 and PM10 concentration touched a particular … [Read more...] about ‘Finer’ plan to fight air pollution to come into force from Oct 1
Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
Not just Bengaluru, many towns and cities across India — Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Silchar, Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Gurugram (above), to name a few — were flooded after spells of intense rain that overwhelmed their poor and choked urban infrastructure. (Image: @ashwinning/Twitter) While there are a host of manmade and natural factors behind the increasing incidence of floods in Indian cities, it is the former that is more to blame, experts have warned, emphasising that the environment must be respected and things set right before it is too late. Unplanned construction in low-lying areas and wetlands, rampant concretisation, choked and overwhelmed storm-water drains, as well as disappearing water bodies and natural water channels are responsible for urban floods, which throw life out of gear in cities every monsoon. A spurt in spells of very heavy rainfall in short durations triggered by erratic weather patterns is a double whammy for already-choked urban infrastructure, … [Read more...] about Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
Stubble burning is back, smothering north India with concerns for the upcoming winter
A man burns paddy waste stubble in a field on the outskirts of Chandigarh, India. REUTERS/Ajay Verma - D1BEULQOFXAA What causes major worry is same solutions that earlier failed to stop farm burnings are being pushed again amidst similar concerns from farmers. Many pitches cash compensation to farmers and crop diversification as more viable solutions but government action is going in a different direction. Vivek Gupta Even as authorities claim that they are all set to deal with what is now an annual public health crisis, stubble burning in the northern states of India is back this year, raising concern among citizens, government authorities and policymakers. For the last several years, the practice of stubble burning – where fire is set to straw stubble to clear fields before the next crop is planted – has been one of the prime reasons for air pollution over the national capital region (NCR) and other parts of the Indo-Gangetic plains, before the onset of the … [Read more...] about Stubble burning is back, smothering north India with concerns for the upcoming winter
Elon Musk Will Share Revenue With Twitter ‘Creators,’ If They Pay Him
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There is one idea that Elon Musk has for Twitter that on the surface, actually sounds pretty good. He subscribes to the notion that Twitter users are “creators” for the site, and like places like Twitch and YouTube, the company should share some portion of the revenue they’re helping to generate. Of course, in practice, the implementation of how he says he’s going to do this sounds…terrible. Yesterday, Elon Musk announced that “starting today,” creators would be able to share in the revenue generated from the newly-inserted ads in reply threads. By the end of the day, there was no indication that program had actually gone live, and there were no further details about what kind of revenue split there would and who was eligible, other than one point of clarity: This would only apply to Twitter Blue members. So, in effect, what Elon Musk is saying is that if you pay him $8-11 a month for Blue, or at minimum … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Will Share Revenue With Twitter ‘Creators,’ If They Pay Him

Teachers Need The Why, The What, And The How For Change To Happen
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There’s a dizzying amount of activity going on in some states and school districts, spurred by the push to bring classroom practice in line with the “science of reading.” But not all of that activity translates into better reading instruction. Some teachers are being required to take rigorous courses that ask them to re-examine and abandon deeply held beliefs about how children learn to read. Even if they become convinced that change is needed—that is, they have the why— they may not be equipped to put their new understanding into practice. Other teachers are simply being asked to follow a radically different kind of literacy curriculum. They have the what— the instructional materials. But they may not understand why change is necessary. That could lead them to depart from the new curriculum or implement it in a way that doesn’t work. Even if teachers have both the why and the what , a radical shift in … [Read more...] about Teachers Need The Why, The What, And The How For Change To Happen

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin 09/06 Update below. This post was originally published on September 3 On September 7, Apple will announce the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Or so we thought... In a surprisingly late leak, news has broken that Apple will not release an ‘iPhone 14 Max’. Instead, the company’s first 6.7-inch sub-$1000 smartphone will be called the ‘iPhone 14 Plus’. And this makes sense for many reasons. First, the leak — and it came in two parts. Part one landed via Twitter when a photo of a seemingly genuine next-gen iPhone case carried ‘iPhone 14 Plus’ branding. This prompted further investigation from 9to5Mac , which subsequently verified the name and instructions given to third-party case makers. “Sources familiar with the matter say Apple has chosen to name the next larger iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus. In addition, at least since July, iPhone case makers have been told to not use the brand … [Read more...] about Apple Insider Reveals Surprise ‘iPhone 14 Plus’ Branding
