Representative image Global shares rose on Friday and investor sentiment stabilized after a volatile week of trading, helping to push up stock indexes in the United States and Europe. Global markets, particularly U.S. stocks, have gyrated wildly this week as investors grew anxious about the possibility of a recession. The S&P is nearly 20% down from its all-time high in January and was close to a bear market on Thursday. Investors are anxious about whether U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell can accomplish a "soft landing," where the Fed raises interest rates just enough to reduce elevated inflation without causing the economy to contract. In an interview late on Thursday, Powell said the battle to control inflation would "include some pain," and he repeated his expectation of half-percentage-point interest rate rises at each of the Fed's next two policy meetings. The war in Ukraine has aggravated supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures already in … [Read more...] about World equities rise on bounce in United States, European markets

World equities rise on bounce in US, European markets
- A + A NEW YORK (May 14): Global shares rose on Friday (May 13) as Wall Street rallied to end a volatile week of trading, while oil jumped 4% on the back of record-high US gas prices. Global markets and US stocks were down sharply most of this week as investors grew anxious about the possibility of recession. The S&P 500 Index was off nearly 20% from its all-time high in January and was close to a bear market on Thursday. But investors' fears over whether US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell can accomplish a "soft landing", bringing inflation down while keeping the US economy growing, appeared to ease at least temporarily on Friday. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe had gained 2.3% at 4.07pm ET (2007 GMT) after hitting its lowest since November 2020 on Thursday. The pan-European STOXX 600 Index rose 2.14%. How Hunter Boards Learned That The Most Powerful Electric Vehicle Is A Skateboard
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Virginia Van Zandt One surprise of the new post-pandemic economy is that 25-year-old skateboard CEOs from Portugal have things to teach executives more than twice their age. Pedro Andrade, the CEO of Hunter Boards , a Lisbon-based firm that builds battery-powered electric skateboards, isn’t your typical corporate-ladder climber. He went to ISCTE Business School , where he learned how to sell beautiful things to trendy people. (The Lisbon school is well known in Europe for teaching marketing.) Next, he attended New York’s Parsons School of Design , where he learned to make products that were both beautiful and functional. (Not a lot of wannabe corporate execs there.) Finally, he pulled it all together in a business that designs, makes, and sells high-end skateboards – growing rapidly while disrupting an established market. By all measures, he and Hunter Boards are succeeding. Andrade and the firm’s chief … [Read more...] about How Hunter Boards Learned That The Most Powerful Electric Vehicle Is A Skateboard
A Virtual Covid-19 Summit With Virtually No Chance Of Success
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Using a virtual structure, the World’s leadership including President Biden, launched the Second Covid-19 Summit to “redouble the efforts” to control the pandemic. On “virtual” paper, the conference was attended by the most important leaders engaged in the pandemic fight. Yet, the likelihood of anything meaningful coming out of this conference is so remote that at best it is anti-climactic. And why with the luster and panoply of these participants should expectations have been so lukewarm? Because we witnessed an assembly sorely lacking in significant monetary pledges. Instead, of discussing global planning options, the main questions and focus were on asking for donations. What the summit organizers failed to recognize is, it’s always about the money. If you are a serious player, you don’t walk into a casino with empty pockets; you bring the money. A coherent domestic and international financial Covid-19 strategy has … [Read more...] about A Virtual Covid-19 Summit With Virtually No Chance Of Success
The Tech To Make Green Energy More Efficient Also Increases Cyber Risk
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Convergence, which has transformed the information telecommunications and media sectors over decades, is also underway in the energy and renewables industry. I sat down with former Department of Homeland Security policy expert Adam Stahl to review green energy and geopolitics. Stahl, who advises the private green energy sector, worked in various US government policy roles and studied global affairs at Oxford. Here are the key takeaways. Digitization of the energy sector both strengthens and weakens nation states. Growing demands for cleaner, more efficient fuel-sources have profoundly changed the geopolitics for energy suppliers and consumers. The technology to manage the generation, distribution, and transmission of energy is increasingly robust and integrated. However, this digitization expands the surface attack area for both nation-state actors and cyber criminals. Both renewable and traditional energy industrial … [Read more...] about The Tech To Make Green Energy More Efficient Also Increases Cyber Risk
How To Close The Venture Capital Gender Gap Faster
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Allison Robinson, the founder and chief executive officer of The Mom Project, had difficulty raising funding for her digital talent marketplace and community that connects mothers returning to the workforce with job opportunities that offer flexibility. After more than 100 meetings with venture capitalists, she noticed a trend. “If I had to pick an example of a stark difference between pitching men versus women, it would be that many male venture capitalists didn’t fundamentally understand the problem we were solving. I made it to a number of late-stage discussions to then be passed over on the grounds of the addressable market being too small,” Robinson says, “It’s mind-boggling. There are over 40 million moms in the U.S. and 86% will change employers for an opportunity that better fits her work-life considerations.” Robinson successfully pitched the female-led, early-stage venture capital firm BBG Ventures, which only invests in … [Read more...] about How To Close The Venture Capital Gender Gap Faster
Anger erupts at Xi Jinping’s ‘Big White’ army of lockdown enforcers
A worker wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) posts a sign on a perimeter fence surrounding a neighborhood placed under lockdown due to Covid-19 in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. Photographer: Qilai Shen/Bloomberg Shortly after Shanghai went into lockdown, Mark Liu volunteered to help authorities provide essential goods to millions of residents by becoming what’s known as a Dabai, or “Big White.” The 33-year-old business director at a fund, who relocated to Shanghai recently from Hong Kong, hoped that signing up would allow him to get more transparent information on the Covid cases in his complex. For the most part, the Dabai work with neighborhood committees to ensure residents get food and other essentials to keep daily life running as smoothly as possible, as well as carry out mass Covid-19 testings. But he soon grew disillusioned by the experience. Not only did the details on Covid outbreaks remain opaque after he became a Dabai, but he also saw … [Read more...] about Anger erupts at Xi Jinping’s ‘Big White’ army of lockdown enforcers

Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Often misunderstood, Redesign Health’s model is a very different way to create, fund and launch healthcare startups, but will it pay off over the long term? Typically, a story starts with what a company is. In the case of Redesign Health , perhaps it’s best to start with what it isn’t. Redesign Health is not a venture capital (VC) firm, despite the fact that it's often listed among other VCs in funding press releases . It’s not a startup studio or accelerator, even though it’s named as a partner in building many early-stage healthcare companies. Instead, Redesign Health styles itself as “a company that powers innovation in healthcare by developing technologies, tools, and insights that lower the barriers to change across the industry.” What does that mean? After conversations with Redesign Health CEO Brett Shaheen, in addition to other entrepreneurs in the Redesign Health family, the answer is seemingly … [Read more...] about Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle
