Murky water at Koh Samui beach caused by plankton bloom, not oil spill: officials

March 25, 2023 by thethaiger.com

UPDATE The smelly, murky water putting off tourists from swimming in the sea at Maenam Beach in Koh Samui , southern Thailand , is not an oil spill but caused by a plankton bloom , which is a natural phenomenon, according to the Director of Koh Samui Harbour Authority, Arun Buppako. The photos circulating of green murky water at the beach show dead plankton floating on the surface of the water, said the director. Officials inspected the area and found no oil spills, he added. According to NaewNa , the director said… “Plankton blooms are a natural phenomena that happen every year. One main contributing factor is that when wastewater from the community is released into the sea, it acts as nutrients for plankton, causing them to multiply quickly. When the oxygen in the water depletes, the plankton dies, turning the seawater green. That’s the tell for Eventbrite . If the haunted yacht cruises and cemetery tours are reaching out to the event planning and digital ticketing platform to list and promote their events, then the Thanksgiving Eve bar crawls, holiday light shows, and New Year’s Eve specials will follow. During Halloween 2022, the number of paid events on Eventbrite grew 30% over 2019, and ticket volume beat the company’s prior record by more than 50%. The reinvigorated enthusiasm for live experiences has been a boon to Eventbrite’s fortunes—and a success made possible only because Julia Hartz, cofounder and CEO, has spent the past few years effectively re-founding the company, which she created with her husband, Kevin, and their technical cofounder Renaud Visage in 2006. After the pandemic hit in … [Read more...] about How Eventbrite CEO Julia Hartz brought the ticketing platform back from the brink

After a “near-death business experience,” Airbnb’s Brian Chesky is perfecting his home-rentals platform

March 2, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Airbnb is No. 3 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Spring 2020 felt like a “near-death business experience,” says Airbnb cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky, as bookings dropped 80% within a few weeks . It was also an opportunity to trim back the company’s distracting side projects—tours, hotels, even an airline—and, he says, “focus on the core”: the design and experience of Airbnb’s home-rentals platform. “If not for the pandemic and the crisis, I don’t know how I would have made that pivot,” Chesky says. “But I had to basically rebuild the company a bit from the ground up.” Last spring, that work led to the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade : a top-to-bottom redesign that lets people search accommodation by category, rather than just destination, which has the benefit of introducing travelers to places and properties they might have otherwise … [Read more...] about After a “near-death business experience,” Airbnb’s Brian Chesky is perfecting his home-rentals platform

Flashfood is No. 36 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Even as prices have soared, heightening food insecurity, the average grocery store discards up to $10,000 worth of items every day. “Food waste is such a stupid problem,” says Josh Domingues, founder and CEO of Flashfood . “We have so many people who are hungry, and so much food going to waste.” Flashfood’s mission is to divert food from landfills—where it emits methane that contributes to global warming—and onto people’s plates. The five-year-old startup created an app that lets grocers alert shoppers to food that’s nearing its expiration date (mostly meat, dairy, and produce) and offer them instant discounts—an average of 50%—to purchase those items. Shoppers buy the products in-app, before collecting them from dedicated Flashfood fridges and dry racks in-store. … [Read more...] about This app is tackling food insecurity and reducing grocery store waste

Ramp is No. 9 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Ramp cofounder and CEO Eric Glyman may lead an enterprise software company, but he’s not the type of guy who relishes the hard sell. (Ramp’s first sales hire, he says, was focused on customer success, not deals.) Instead, he likes to let Ramp’s products, including a corporate card and spend-management platform, do the talking. “We try to show the value first and let customers come to their own views,” Glyman says. A free calculator on the company’s website, for instance, predicts the dollar amount that prospective customers can expect to save if they switch to Ramp, based on their recent financials. If last year is any indication, Ramp’s product-first, gimmick-free approach has struck a chord, especially with small-business owners. More than 13,000 businesses now use the platform, a threefold increase year … [Read more...] about This company is making expense reports way less of a hassle

US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve

March 24, 2023 by www.investopedia.com

Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022. However, the relatively limited size of the planned repurchases in proportion to global oil demand makes assessing the impact on U.S. crude oil markets somewhat difficult—especially amid current global economic trends and geopolitical challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week it may take years for the government to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It's a reversal of plans the government announced last year to repurchase oil it sold from the reserve at lower prices. Current global economic concerns and geopolitical conditions, however, present challenges in assessing the market impact of the decision. Granholm told a House panel Thursday that the U.S. likely would not … [Read more...] about US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
