Murky water at Koh Samui beach caused by plankton bloom, not oil spill: officials
UPDATE The smelly, murky water putting off tourists from swimming in the sea at Maenam Beach in Koh Samui , southern Thailand , is not an oil spill but caused by a plankton bloom , which is a natural phenomenon, according to the Director of Koh Samui Harbour Authority, Arun Buppako. The photos circulating of green murky water at the beach show dead plankton floating on the surface of the water, said the director. Officials inspected the area and found no oil spills, he added. According to NaewNa , the director said… “Plankton blooms are a natural phenomena that happen every year. One main contributing factor is that when wastewater from the community is released into the sea, it acts as nutrients for plankton, causing them to multiply quickly. When the oxygen in the water depletes, the plankton dies, turning the seawater green. Airbnb is No. 3 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Spring 2020 felt like a “near-death business experience,” says Airbnb cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky, as bookings dropped 80% within a few weeks . It was also an opportunity to trim back the company’s distracting side projects—tours, hotels, even an airline—and, he says, “focus on the core”: the design and experience of Airbnb’s home-rentals platform. “If not for the pandemic and the crisis, I don’t know how I would have made that pivot,” Chesky says. “But I had to basically rebuild the company a bit from the ground up.” Last spring, that work led to the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade : a top-to-bottom redesign that lets people search accommodation by category, rather than just destination, which has the benefit of introducing travelers to places and properties they might have otherwise … [Read more...] about After a “near-death business experience,” Airbnb’s Brian Chesky is perfecting his home-rentals platform

Even as prices have soared, heightening food insecurity, the average grocery store discards up to $10,000 worth of items every day. “Food waste is such a stupid problem,” says Josh Domingues, founder and CEO of Flashfood . “We have so many people who are hungry, and so much food going to waste.” Flashfood’s mission is to divert food from landfills—where it emits methane that contributes to global warming—and onto people’s plates. Ramp cofounder and CEO Eric Glyman may lead an enterprise software company, but he’s not the type of guy who relishes the hard sell. (Ramp’s first sales hire, he says, was focused on customer success, not deals.) Instead, he likes to let Ramp’s products, including a corporate card and spend-management platform, do the talking. “We try to show the value first and let customers come to their own views,” Glyman says. A free calculator on the company’s website, for instance, predicts the dollar amount that prospective customers can expect to save if they switch to Ramp, based on their recent financials. If last year is any indication, Ramp’s product-first, gimmick-free approach has struck a chord, especially with small-business owners. US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022. However, the relatively limited size of the planned repurchases in proportion to global oil demand makes assessing the impact on U.S. crude oil markets somewhat difficult—especially amid current global economic trends and geopolitical challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week it may take years for the government to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
