While traditionally separated by floors and organizational structures, human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) are now playing a more critical role in each other’s daily operations, especially in the digital era of business. Hiring new employees and managing existing workforces based on the demand for skills is increasingly a coordinated effort between the two departments. The HR department now relies on advanced resource management solutions to better manage hiring and reskilling programs, while the IT department collaborates with HR teams to implement solutions that enhance employee experience. This has reemphasized the need for HR and IT teams to be more aligned than ever before. Data silos have existed, but can that continue? HR and IT departments have arguably been two of the most collaborative departments in any … [Read more...] about The Connected Employee Experience Requires HR And IT To Be More Aligned Than Ever

How Remote Work Impacts Managers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Discussions around the "future of work" nearly always revolve around knowledge workers. Since the Covid pandemic, many of these discussions revolve around remote work, and whether it has been productive, the gender issues involved when we work from home, and what it might do to corporate real estate. Research from Reichman University's Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology takes a different tact and explores the issue of remote work from the manager's perspective. The researchers wanted to understand how the transition to remote work has affected managers, especially in light of the reinvention of the managerial role in the wake of the transition. Changing role As part of the study, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with roughly 30 managers from various industries who underwent the shift from office-based work to remote work during the pandemic. What are trade secrets ?
Trade secrets are a valuable asset for businesses of all sizes, providing a competitive edge and valuable information that is kept secret from the public as well as competitors. But what trade secrets and what kind of protection, exactly, is given to their owners? In the case of Air Philippines Corp vs. Pennswell, Inc., a collection case filed by Pennswell Inc. (PENN) against Air Philippines Corp (AIR), AIR refused to pay on the grounds that PENN misrepresented that the items they sold belonged to a new product line, but which AIR claimed were not new but the same products it had previously purchased from PENN under a different brand name. AIR claimed that had it known about this, it would not have purchased the items. AIR asked the court to compel PENN to disclose the ingredients and chemical components of the products, to show that the old and new products were the same. For its part, PENN claimed it should not be compelled to disclose the chemical components, because these were … [Read more...] about What are trade secrets ?
A Video Art Retrospective At MoMA Reveals The Utopian Hopes Behind Tech We Now Dread
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On January 1, 1984, George Orwell was greeted with a television program unlike any ever broadcast. The fact that Orwell died in 1950 was utterly beside the point. As the author of Nineteen Eighty-Four , Orwell had set expectations for the mid-80s more than anyone alive. With Good Morning, Mr. Orwell , the video artist Nam June Paik sought to reclaim the maligned future for the present. In Orwell’s visionary fiction, TV was destined to become a primary instrument of political control, a delivery mechanism for propaganda slyly combined with a surveillance system by which thought police would be able to monitor private citizens 24/7. Paik believed that television could, to the contrary, become an apparatus for cultural liberation. "I want to show [television's] potential for interaction, its possibilities as a medium for peace and global understanding,” Paik explained. “It can spread out, cross international borders, … [Read more...] about A Video Art Retrospective At MoMA Reveals The Utopian Hopes Behind Tech We Now Dread
TikTok’s Links To China Demand A Serious U.S. Response
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The battle over TikTok has become a proxy for worsening U.S.-Chinese relations and the anxieties generated by that clash. Shou Chew , TikTok’s chief executive officer, was grilled for five hours last week by members of Congress concerned primarily about potential Chinese government interference in the company’s U.S. operations. The hearing took place amid growing fear in Congress and the Biden Administration that a Chinese technology company can’t be relied upon to protect user privacy and may be exploited by the Chinese government to disrupt our democratic process. While the challenge posed by TikTok is clear, the way forward is not. Some members of Congress have called for TikTok to be banned in the U.S. The chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), led the hearing and set the tone. “We do not trust TikTok will ever embrace American values,” Rodgers said. But expecting … [Read more...] about TikTok’s Links To China Demand A Serious U.S. Response
Why Your Next Database Is A Graph
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Businesspeople like graphs. C-suite executives are fond of pie charts, Venn diagrams, histograms and all manner of schematics to illustrate sales performance, market penetration and product trajectory status. They love to use these illustrative tools as they present to each other in the boardroom. But there’s another type of graph that drives contemporary cloud-connected businesses and it runs as a new intelligence undercurrent in the IT department. There are many types of database and most are built with columns and rows, but the graph database is essentially different because it is made up of a collection of ‘nodes’ and ‘edges’. You can think of a graph database as a set of interconnected circles (nodes) and each node represents a person, a product, a place or ‘thing’ that we want to build into our data universe. The relationships and connections between the nodes on our graph database are described by ‘edges’ … [Read more...] about Why Your Next Database Is A Graph

In the movie Apollo 13 , three astronauts returning to Earth are unaware of their perilous reentry. Back in Houston at Mission Control, chief flight director Gene Kranz (played by Ed Harris) comments on the unfortunate events, saying: "Is there anything they can do about it?" No one dared to speak. "Then they don't need to know." If Kranz was in IT security, he'd probably have a thing or two to say about actionable information and how there's sometimes too little and many times far too much. In this article, I'll share how automation can help turn the right information into action, helping to defend against cyberattacks, mitigate risk, shore up compliance and improve productivity. Advertising Research Group Wants To Replace TV Households
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) recently called for a “gradual migration” away from the long-held term “TV households” to “TV-accessible households” (TVA), as the source of television measurement. The ARF cites the continued migration in viewing driven by broadband and mobile devices. The suggestion comes after the ARF conducted an extensive enumeration survey of 10,000+ adults age 18+ via its most recent Device and Account Sharing (DASH DASH ) survey. The DASH survey is a nationally projectable enumeration study of consumer behavior with TV and digital media. The survey data was collected online, face to face and by phone. In addition, 3,141 of the respondents were in previous year’s survey allowing to uncover any longitudinal changes using a unified sample. The evolution of DASH will be explored in a session entitled, “DASH: Building a New Standard in TV,” at an ARF AUDIENCExSCIENCE event on April 25. … [Read more...] about Advertising Research Group Wants To Replace TV Households
