Making Safety A Higher Priority Before its E. coli incidents, a slew of sources tell me that the food safety and QA team overseeing the company’s entire supply chain included just four people, a low number for a chain of Chipotle’s scale and complexity. The company also split its safety teams, which some suggest created arbitrary divisions of responsibility within the organization. Heidi Wederquist, then Chipotle’s director of QA and food safety, oversaw supply-chain issues, but had little visibility into restaurant operations. And how did the audience of investors respond to Barra’s pitch? With seeming indifference. Indeed, many of the attendees appeared to be more engaged with their iPhones than the CEO’s presentation. All of this solidified the notion that GM was a dysfunctional, bureaucracy-ridden has-been. If any business was likely to dominate the future of auto transport, it would be a Silicon Valley … [Read more...] about Mary Barra Is Remaking GM’s Culture—And The Company Itself
"This issue becomes grave given the fact that the nature of threat is dynamic and keeps changing rapidly. The interconnected systems are as safe as their weakest link. There is, therefore, a need for both security against possible cyberattacks and resilience in the eventuality of such attacks," the banking regulator said. … [Read more...] about Banks should focus on building ‘digital trust’ amid rising cyber threats, says IBM executive
These startups also note that creating perfect digital copies of real humans isn’t necessarily where the industry will end up. Uneeq, for instance, says it has also created non-human characters, and it expects more clients to deploy them over time. Cross says Soul Machines’s underlying computer graphics and AI animation engine could just as easily apply to caricatures and cartoons. As more brands decide to adopt AI avatars, they may realize that rough approximation is more palatable than full-on fakery. … [Read more...] about ‘We can’t scale humans’: Why startups are raising millions to build AI avatars
