In those early days, the three of us met every Monday midmorning to start the week, and somewhere along the way I began stopping on my commute to pick up bagels—three bagels to be exact. As the company grew, so did our Monday mid-morning meeting, and so did my bagel order. I soon was buying a half-dozen bagels. Then a dozen bagels. Then two dozen bagels. Then three dozen. And as the bagel orders grew, I found it was getting harder and harder to hold the whole business in our heads. (It was also harder and harder to carry the bagels.) In particular, I also noticed that the way we’d been running the company wasn’t working well anymore. People couldn’t see the whole picture anymore, so they didn’t intuit the plan the way we had done as a small team. Employees started to silo. Engineers didn’t talk to customers anymore; only the support team did. Some people were working on our first product, Twilio Voice, while others had started building our second … [Read more...] about The “dozen-bagel” secret to preserving startup spirit as your company grows

Why you’re feeling unmotivated and how to deal with it
That’s when the question about how I might take action to do something that would bring me joy came about. And the answer that came to mind was how much I wanted to get on a plane tomorrow, fly to Paris, and explore the city. Not the COVID version of Paris, but actual Paris—the way it used to be. “That’s what would bring me joy,” I thought to myself (and actually shared with the group). … [Read more...] about Why you’re feeling unmotivated and how to deal with it
As a mob attacked the Capitol, Wikipedia struggled to find the right words
So he got to work. Moore is a veteran editor on Wikipedia, spending hours a day creating, shepherding, and policing articles. He started in 2007, ranging across topics of personal interest like music or architecture, but since early last year he’s been focused on the pandemic and political protests. Just after 1:30 p.m. EST, as rioters and police clashed at the bottom of the Capitol steps, he wrote, “On January 6, 2021, thousands of Donald Trump supporters gathered in Washington, D.C., to reject results of the November 2020 presidential election.” He appended links to a couple of sources deemed “reliable” by the community—NPR and The Washington Post—clicked save, and notified some other editors about his article. It was tentatively titled “January 2021 Donald Trump Rally.” … [Read more...] about As a mob attacked the Capitol, Wikipedia struggled to find the right words
5 ways to persuade yourself to be more productive
“For whatever weird reason, we have the idea that powering through is the best way to get stuff done and a sign of our own virtue,” he says. “We’ve got it upside down and believe amateurs take breaks and pros don’t. Athletes know that taking breaks is not a deviation from performance but is part of performance.” … [Read more...] about 5 ways to persuade yourself to be more productive
The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara On Managing the Undead Way
“Their businesses are successful; I don’t need to comment or get involved in them–and the other producers are very respectful of how I run this show,” says Mazzara. “When there is a decision to be made, I bring them into the process: `This is what I think we should do. What do you think we should do?’ If I can get a consensus, everyone feels better. When some of these entrepreneurs suggest ideas that I have to reject, I’ll say to them, `You might be right, but I’m making this decision for this reason.’ Even if they think I’m making a mistake, they realize I’ve explained myself and valued their input enough to treat them as partners in the decision, but only one decision can be made. There’s more than enough work and credit to go around on TV show, so I want everyone to feel fully invested and relaxed.” … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara On Managing the Undead Way
