McDonald’s to start reopening restaurants in Ukraine
- A + A (Aug 11): McDonald's Corp said on Thursday it plans on reopening its restaurants in Ukraine over the next few months in an early sign of western businesses returning to the country, even as the conflict with Russia continues. The world's biggest burger chain closed all its restaurants in Ukraine and Russia in March, following Moscow's invasion of the eastern European country. McDonald's had 109 restaurants in Ukraine, but did not specify how many it planned to reopen. It sold most of its 850 restaurants in Russia to one of its local licensees in May. The decision to reopen came after "extensive consultation and discussion with Ukrainian officials, suppliers, and security specialists, and in consideration of our employees' request to return to work," Paul Pomroy, McDonald's head of international operated markets, said in a message to employees. McDonald's said it was working with suppliers to get products to restaurants and bring employees back on site … [Read more...] about McDonald’s to start reopening restaurants in Ukraine
McDonald’s Just Made a Huge Announcement About Its Stores In Ukraine. It’s a Lesson in Emotional Intelligence
It's been almost six months since McDonald's paused its operations in Ukraine as a result of the country's war with Russia. But a few days ago, the fast food chain shared a fascinating announcement about both what the company has done to support its people, and its new plans moving forward. "As we look forward, supporting our people in Ukraine continues to be our number one priority," wrote Paul Pomroy, McDonald's Corporate Senior Vice President of International Operated Markets in a statement on the company's website. Pomroy went on to share two very interesting points: 1. Over the past months, McDonald's has continued to pay the salaries of more than 10,000 employees within Ukraine. 2. The company is now planning to reopen some restaurants in Kyiv and western Ukraine. These types of decisions aren't easy. But they are a great example of how organizations can build goodwill, take care of its people, and benefit society as a whole. Why My Spouse Was My Most Important Asset in Launching My Company
People who are familiar with the story of Honest Tea may recall that I launched the company with my former Yale School of Management professor Barry Nalebuff. With Barry as board chair and me as the "TeaEO," we made a dynamic duo that built the idea from a startup with five thermoses and an empty Snapple bottle to a national brand acquired by the Coca-Cola Company in 2011. Barry, who kept his job as a Yale professor, is still a close friend and occasionally provides advice or helps edit our label messages. But as we mark Honest Tea's 20th anniversary this spring, there is another founder who didn't have her name on the label but has been the soul of the brand: my wife, Julie Farkas. In 1997, when I thought about leaving a promising job at Calvert mutual funds to launch a startup in an industry where I had no relevant experience (except that I drank beverages), Julie was the first person to support the idea. Even though we had three boys under the age of 6, including a … [Read more...] about Why My Spouse Was My Most Important Asset in Launching My Company
Jibble, jibble! Why Doja Cat is the new model for celebrity brand-partnership success
Back in April, before she provided one of the most memorable moments of the 2022 Grammys— rushing back from the bathroom to accept the trophy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with SZA for their hit “Kiss Me More”—Doja Cat posted a short TikTok video from her dressing room. It’s just a closeup of her holding up a glittery, crystal-encrusted custom JBL Clip portable speaker, and saying “Jibble! Jibble! Jibble!” advertisement advertisement It may not be how the brand pronounces its name, but for JBL, it translated into one of its most significant and successful social moments. That, combined with Doja Cat taking the speaker on the red carpet with her (it matched her dress), gave the brand two years’ worth of social engagement in about three days. @dojacat #ad ???????? @jblaudio #ad ♬ original sound – Doja Cat Bill Wyman, vice president of integrated marketing for JBL, says that in the past, when brand people would hear something … [Read more...] about Jibble, jibble! Some lab techs refuse to take blood from possible monkeypox patients, raising concerns about stigma and testing delays
(CNN) Many technicians at Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics, two of the largest commercial labs in the US, have been refusing to draw blood from patients who might have monkeypox, CNN has learned. Labcorp and Quest don't dispute that in many cases, their phlebotomists are not taking blood from possible monkeypox patients. What remains unclear, after company statements and follow-ups from CNN, is whether the phlebotomists are refusing on their own to take blood or if it is the company policy that prevents them. The two testing giants say they're reviewing their safety policies and procedures for their employees. Testing is crucial to getting monkeypox under control, but there's a 'shocking' lack of demand Infectious disease experts who treat monkeypox patients say that the refusals are based on stigma and slow efforts to identify and isolate patients with monkeypox at a time when the nation's health officials are coming under criticism for struggling to get the … [Read more...] about Some lab techs refuse to take blood from possible monkeypox patients, raising concerns about stigma and testing delays
‘I’m always worrying’: The emotional toll of financial stress
File image of a shopper holding groceries while waiting to checkout inside a grocery store in San Francisco, California, US Christina Caron For Ellie Alvarado, a teacher and mother of three in Elgin, Illinois, figuring out how to pay the bills has become a source of anxiety and tension, especially when she and her husband argue over how to cut back. “When I say, ‘OK we cannot buy anything this week or else we’ll go into overdraft’ — he says, ‘No, what are you talking about? We’re both working. That shouldn’t happen,’” Alvarado said. Soaring food costs have meant no more impromptu trips to McDonald’s. Name-brand cereal and other little luxuries are out, too. Gas prices, which recently hovered around $5 a gallon, are also eating into their budget. “Every time I fill up our van I’m flabbergasted,” said Alvarado, who sometimes sees as little as $100 in her family’s checking account. “I’m always worrying,” she added. Restaurant Brand’s Q2 Earnings Preview: What Are We Watching?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Restaurant Brands International Inc. stock (NYSE: QSR) is one of the largest fast-food restaurant chains in the world and it is a combination of Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeyes, and, since late 2021, also Firehouse Subs. The company is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter results on Thursday, August 4. We expect QSR’s stock to see little to no movement due to revenues coming in line, and earnings missing expectations marginally in its second-quarter results. The fast-food giant’s next few quarters might show high volatility given the current macroeconomic situation. However, the company showcases solid mid-to-long term growth prospects. The revenue stream of QSR is directly influenced by the system sales it generates across its brands, which can be increased by growing restaurant sales or by adding as many restaurants as possible. Notably, the company’s net restaurant growth grew 4.4% year-over-year in Q1 FY’22 - … [Read more...] about Restaurant Brand’s Q2 Earnings Preview: What Are We Watching?
Australia knocks back major coal project near Great Barrier Reef
- A + A (Aug 4): Australia’s new Government rejected plans for a major coal project near the Great Barrier Reef, marking a sharp change in policy in one of the biggest exporters of the polluting fossil fuel. Minister for Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek said Thursday that she intended to not approve mining tycoon Clive Palmer’s Central Queensland Coal project due to the likelihood of “unacceptable impacts” on the world heritage site. It’s the first time an Australian Minister has refused a coal mine under the country’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, her office said. The announcement comes on the same day Australia’s Lower House of Parliament passed legislation to cut the country’s emissions by 43% from 2005 levels by 2030 in a major policy victory for the Labor government that came to power in May after a climate-focused election. There is a 10-day period of public comment on the decision and the proponents of the mine were contacted, … [Read more...] about Australia knocks back major coal project near Great Barrier Reef
