Bud Light’s Super Bowl Ad: Corn Syrup, Ethics and Mistaken Identity

February 6, 2019 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The most startling television ad of the Super Bowl was undoubtedly the Bud Light/Game of Thrones tie-In where one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons set fire to the Bud Light jousting arena. It was jarring, memorable and more than a little puzzling. But it wasn’t the most controversial ad of the big game. It wasn’t even the most controversial ad for Bud Light. That honor goes to the “Special Delivery” ad. The Bud Light King's Quest to return corn syrup Anheuser-Busch In that ad, the Bud King – blissfully unaware that he is due to be roasted by a dragon in an hour – receives an enormous cask of corn syrup. The King immediately deduces that the delivery must have gone to the wrong castle as he exclaims “We don’t brew Bud Light with Corn Syrup!” before setting out on a quest to return the cask. He travels to Miller Lite and ultimately to Coors Light. The claims made in this ad are true: Miller Lite and … [Read more...] about Bud Light’s Super Bowl Ad: Corn Syrup, Ethics and Mistaken Identity

Netflix ‘actively’ working on ad-supported subscription

June 29, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

PARIS: Netflix is “actively” working on building its cheaper, ad-supported deal, the company’s French team said on June 28, but added there was no clear timeline. It was revealed last month that the streaming platform was planning to introduce a new cheaper subscription model by the end of the year that would break its taboo on advertising. That leak to the New York Times followed news that Netflix had lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of the year – its first decline in a decade. “We don’t have a precise timeline yet,” Anne-Gabrielle Dauba-Pantanacce, head of communications for Netflix France, told AFP. “We are actively working on it. It’s a priority – this idea of giving subscribers more options in the context of high inflation,” she added. Bloomberg reported over the weekend that Netflix has yet to appoint a head of advertising or build a sales team. The Wall Street Journal said Netflix is actively looking into partnerships with Google and Comcast to … [Read more...] about Netflix ‘actively’ working on ad-supported subscription

Coke has a new flavor. It took inspiration from McDonald’s

June 29, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

New York (CNN Business) Coca-Cola has another new flavor. This time, it got some help. The latest product out of Coca-Cola Creations — Coke's innovation platform, which brought us starlight and pixel-flavored sodas — is a collaboration with Marshmello , a masked DJ and electronic music producer. If you think the artist worked with Coke to develop a marshmallow-flavored beverage, you're wrong. Instead, the new flavor has notes of strawberry and watermelon, Marshmello's favorites. "For our third Coca-Cola Creations drop, we sought to add an unexpected remix of flavors to a great Coca-Cola taste," said Oana Vlad, senior director of global strategy at the company, in a statement announcing the collaboration Wednesday. "We created a vibey blend of my favorite flavors in this all-new mix," Marshmello said in a statement. "I think it tastes amazing and I hope fans love it too." Coca-Cola's new flavor was created in collaboration with … [Read more...] about Coke has a new flavor. It took inspiration from McDonald’s

Social Spin Doctor: Kind Bar’s Daniel Lubetzky Builds A $1.5 Billion Fortune On Do-Gooder Rhetoric

March 5, 2019 by www.forbes.com

I f anybody had said to me I would end up in the food business, I would have said, ‘What are you smoking?’ ” says Daniel Lubetzky , the 50-year-old founder of Kind Healthy Snacks . “I never thought in a thousand years I would be selling food.” Maybe that’s because Lubetzky isn’t really selling food. Rather he is peddling health and altruism, at least the cheap sort you can buy in a 1.4-ounce fruit-and-nut snack bar drizzled with chocolate. Clues to Lubetzky’s deeper ambitions abound in his office decor: On one wall hang framed photos of him with Pope Francis, President Barack Obama and Shimon Peres, the late president of Israel. Books about the Middle East line another. Motivational quotes from the likes of Gandhi, Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama are painted in the hallways. The overt display of social consciousness is core to Kind’s business strategy. The company has sold 2 billion snack bars since its founding in 2004 and has done so by wrapping itself in a … [Read more...] about Social Spin Doctor: Kind Bar’s Daniel Lubetzky Builds A $1.5 Billion Fortune On Do-Gooder Rhetoric

Why ‘back to normal’ is just a C-suite fantasy

June 30, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

New York (CNN Business) Editor's Note: This story is part of CNN Business' Nightcap newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free, here. Raise your hand if this thought — an actual quote from a real-life CEO — crosses your mind a few times a day: "I just want to go sit at the beach and do nothing." That's what Andrew Formica, the 51-year-old chief executive of Jupiter Fund Management, told Bloomberg this week after he suddenly announced he's leaving the $68 billion asset management fund after three years at the helm (and a long career in finance). Which just illustrates how deeply the mood around work has shifted during the pandemic. The rank-and-file are disgruntled. So are middle managers. And executives aren't feeling great, either (they're just paid much, much better). Read More Here's the deal: The so-called Great Resignation, in which workers are quitting in record numbers to move into better jobs, isn't limited … [Read more...] about Why ‘back to normal’ is just a C-suite fantasy

Nazlan’s Maybank role known to Najib, irrelevant to SRC trial, says DPP

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Datuk Seri Najib Razak (Photo by Zahid Izzani/The Edge filepix) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): The prosecution in the SRC International Sdn Bhd appeal contended that trial judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali's previous roles in Maybank did not pose a conflict of interest in the trial in the High Court. In opposing the bid by Datuk Seri Najib Razak to adduce fresh evidence in the appeal, deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul said Justice Nazlan's involvement in Maybank Group was known in the public domain. As such, Najib, as chairman of the board of advisors of 1MDB, ought to have known about his former engagement with the bank but did not object Nazlan presiding the trial then, Mohd Ashrof said in his affidavit in reply sighted by theedgemarkets.com . In the affidavit, Mohd Ashrof cited numerous news articles in 2018 which reported Justice Nazlan's position at Maybank. He noted that the news articles were in the public domain, even … [Read more...] about Nazlan’s Maybank role known to Najib, irrelevant to SRC trial, says DPP

Kind Escalates The Bar Wars

April 10, 2019 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Snack bar maker Kind is calling out the sugar content in rival bars as it launches an augmented reality pop-up in Manhattan for 48 hours. The pop-up installation allows consumers to use mobile devices to see the sugar content of everyday snacks. But this welcome reminder to watch our sugar intake is also the escalation of a war that has spilled from beer to bars. Kind CEO Daniel Lubetzky poses for a photo at his office, in New York. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan) ASSOCIATED PRESS Consumers are already familiar with the pitched battle between Bud Light and Miller Light over ingredients . At issue is what’s more important – avoiding corn syrup, or consuming fewer carbs? On the surface, the facts seem to favor Miller from a purely nutritional standpoint, because corn syrup is not in the finished beer in question (Miller Lite) and, yes, carbs do matter. But Bud Light continues to fight back with a taste and … [Read more...] about Kind Escalates The Bar Wars

Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

June 28, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Earlier this year, an Arizona woman whom we’ll call Kelly was completing the paperwork required to get facial feminization surgery. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her teens, and after years of struggling with depression, she decided as a 20-something to transition. Then reality hit fast: The process is expensive, lengthy, and rarely covered by insurance. “So I did what lots of trans people do,” she tells Fast Company . “I got a job at Starbucks.” advertisement advertisement Starbucks has covered some types of gender-reassignment surgery since 2012. But in a radical move in 2018, it worked with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to unveil a supplemental insurance plan that added coverage of procedures “previously considered cosmetic,” such as breast reduction, forehead contouring, calf implants, and hair transplants. With the requisite medical signoffs, Starbucks workers could get many of these procedures with zero … [Read more...] about Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

June 29, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

The Associated Press MADRID (AP) — The Latest on the NATO summit in Madrid: ___ Italian Premier Mario Draghi says plans for an increased U.S. military presence in Europe don’t amount to a military escalation within NATO. Draghi says the increase announced Wednesday by the White House would amount to just 70 additional U.S. troops on Italian soil and an air defense system that had already been planned. But he added at the NATO summit in Madrid: “You have to be ready.” Draghi said overall Italy is committing 10,000 troops to NATO. That includes 2,000 divided among the Italian command of NATO in Bulgaria, its presence in Romania and staffing of air patrols over the Baltics.
