Note: This article is also included in our year-end creative wisdom round-up. advertisement advertisement If this summer at the movies has taught us anything–aside from the fact that Jay-Z was huge in the 1920s–it’s that it isn’t so easy to write a summer movie blockbuster. Just ask the writers of such box office and critical flops as The Lone Ranger, After Earth, and The Hangover Part 3. Actually, instead of doing that, we called up Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writer-producers of Star Trek Into Darkness, our pick for the best action movie of the summer (and we’re not alone in that assessment). The longtime writing partners’ impressive track record includes the previous Star Trek movie, Mission: Impossible 3, a couple of Transformers movies, and next year’s Spider-Man sequel. They also produced the summer sleeper hit, Now You See Me. Amidst a couple of Star Trek Into Darkness spoilers (you have seen it by now, right?), they laid … [Read more...] about How to Write and Produce a Summer Movie Blockbuster

At face value, Living On A Prayer and Bitch Better Have My Money have very little in common. But the way our most popular musicians tour looks virtually identical on a map, whether you’re talking about Bon Jovi, Rihanna, Billy Joel, Kanye West, or Trans Siberian orchestra. They all jet-set from city to city, huge stadium to huge stadium, on a path that differs dramatically from that of less popular acts. advertisement It’s an insight discovered by Topos, a firm that uses artificial intelligence to study cities. Topos also charted out the results in infographics that show just how different these tours look on a map. What you see … [Read more...] about A Fascinating Look At How Musicians Tour The U.S.
Company Profile 50 Most Innovative Companies The movie Eighth Grade, YouTube star Bo Burnham’s directorial debut about middle-school Sturm und Drang in the age of social media, was a hit among critics at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. But it became a commercial success a few months later thanks to a shrewd campaign by the New York–based boutique film and TV studio A24. The studio, which has only 70 employees, rented out 50 theaters across the country where teens of any age could see the R-rated film for free—without getting their IDs checked at the door. The stunt is characteristic of A24, which is famous both for championing daring, auteur-driven fare and for its bold, non-traditional approach to finding audiences.
