Nylah Anderson liked to dance along to TikTok and share the platform's short videos. Then, in early December, TikTok's "Blackout Challenge," which dared people to choke themselves until they almost passed out, allegedly caught 10-year-old Nylah's attention in her personalised TikTok feed. Nylah hung her mother's purse by strapping it to a hanger in the closet of her Chester home. She placed her head between the bag and the shoulder strap, putting pressure on her neck, according to court documents. The girl passed out before she could free herself and by the time her mother found her, Nylah was unconscious. The girl died five days later in a children's hospital. Nylah's mother, Tawainna Anderson, sued TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance Inc, in federal court in Philadelphia late last week, accusing the social media platform of being a "dangerously defective" product whose algorithm fed the viral challenge to her daughter's "For You Page," leading to Nylah's death. Distracted EJ Obiena finishes way out of vault medal
Philippines’ Ernest John Obiena competes in the men’s pole vault final during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on August 3, 2021. (Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP) TOKYO—With one leap left to rescue his Tokyo Olympics stint, the last thing EJ Obiena needed was a distraction. Unfortunately he got one when he needed it the least. Obiena failed to hurdle the 5.80-meter qualifying mark and finished out of the medal in men’s pole vault at Olympic Stadium on Thursday, rounding out a day when the Philippines chalked a silver officially in the medal tally and kept one gold hunt alive in men’s boxing. Obiena nearly cleared the mark on his first two tries, tagging the bar on descent both times to necessitate a do-or-die vault. He eased off on his first approach, and that’s when issues with the clock cropped up. Obiena was pointing at the clock at the chief timer before hurriedly trying to complete his third attempt. He did not even make a takeoff and was … [Read more...] about Distracted EJ Obiena finishes way out of vault medal

Seniors are pushing back against ageism on TikTok
TikTok has a reputation for being the playground of young people – and for good reason. However, an increasing number of seniors are giving the Chinese social network a go, often encouraged by their children and grandchildren. And the trend is offering old age a new image. Technophobic, frail, cantankerous, senile... Age-related stereotypes are hard to eradicate. They can be particularly detrimental to women, for whom the fact of aging and seeing their body change remains a source of concern. But a surprising boost could come via TikTok and could help them see things differently, according to a study recently published in the journal The Gerontologist . Professor Reuben Ng and Nicole Indran found that older people are increasingly using TikTok, the preferred app of the younger generations. They analysed 1,382 videos posted by users of the social network aged 60 or older, with between 100,000 and 5.3 million followers. The seniors in the video all talk freely about their age in … [Read more...] about Seniors are pushing back against ageism on TikTok

The One Thing to Do Over July 4th Weekend to Boost Your Creativity, Insight, and Problem-Solving
For many people, the July 4th holiday conjures up images of fireworks, barbecues, and a host of assorted social goings-on. For others, the long weekend presents a chance to take a break from the rigors of work, relax and rejuvenate. A recent study suggests that spending that break in a specific way may result in a few positive side effects that will boost your performance when you resume your daily routine; namely, better creativity , insight and problem solving . Researchers at the University of Kansas and the University of Utah have discovered that getting out in nature disconnected from electronic devices can lead to a 50 percent improvement on a creativity test. The study involved nearly 60 people taking multi-day wilderness hiking trips in four different states. No electronic devices were allowed on the trips. One group took a 10-item creativity test the morning before they began their backpacking trip, and another group took the test a few days later, at the end … [Read more...] about The One Thing to Do Over July 4th Weekend to Boost Your Creativity, Insight, and Problem-Solving
Preakness Stakes 2022: Post Positions, Odds, The Filly Challenger, And Epicenter’s Run For Redemption
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Preakness Stakes’ age-old form as the deceptively “shorter” centerpiece that has dashed many a Triple Crown dream will be turned on its head this year, as the 2022 top favorite Epicenter will attempt to turn the 147th running of the stakes into a rebound, of sorts, from his inability to hold the lead against a furious assault by longshot Rich Strike in the last furlong of the Kentucky Derby on May 7. Two weeks is not a long time between horse races at any level, let alone as an interval between two Triple Crown runs. The density of the gauntlet in which the Class of 2022 operates at the moment is why there have been just thirteen Triple Crown winners. Epicenter’s profile took quite a blow as the 80-1 longshot Rich Strike breezed by him in the Derby. Now he’s got the chance, in a Rich-Strike-free field, to claw himself and his reputation out of the hole in which his inability to defend his lead in the Derby left him. … [Read more...] about Preakness Stakes 2022: Post Positions, Odds, The Filly Challenger, And Epicenter’s Run For Redemption
