2023 Poised To Be A Third Straight Year Filled With State Tax Relief

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Wealth tax legislation introduced in multiple state capitals in late January is noteworthy not only because of the unprecedented and coordinated nature of the effort, but also because it accentuates the contrasting approach to fiscal policy taken by lawmakers in blue and red states. While legislators in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York, and Washington are pursuing first-of-its-kind wealth tax legislation, their counterparts in red states have proposed and are poised to pass more income tax rate-reducing, flattening, and eliminating tax reform in 2023. Perhaps the boldest tax reform proposal of the year is now under consideration in Wisconsin, where Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R) has introduced legislation to overhaul the state tax code. Leader LeMahieu’s bill would move Wisconsin from a progressive income tax code with a top rate of 7.65% to a flat 3.25% income tax rate. Climate untruth surges in denial, conspiracy comeback

February 1, 2023 by www.thejakartapost.com

Roland Lloyd Parry (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Paris   ● Wed, February 1 2023 False information about climate change flourished online over the past year, researchers say, with denialist social media posts and conspiracy theories surging after the United States’ environmental reforms and Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover. “What really surprised us this year was to see a resurgence in language that is reminiscent of the 1980s, phrases like ‘climate hoax’ and ‘climate scam’ that deny the phenomenon of climate change,” said Jennie King, head of civic action at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based digital research group. Popular topics included the false claims that CO2 did not cause climate change or that global warming was not caused by human activity, Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD), a coalition of campaigners, said in a report. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited … [Read more...] about Climate untruth surges in denial, conspiracy comeback

January 31, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative image Highlights Raw materials used in clean energy systems are concentrated in a select few countries outside India The availability of adequate and affordable finance remains a constraint Diversion of large scale funds to green energy can be a challenge for developing countries Despite the rapid scale-up of renewable energy capacities, India continues to depend on thermal power The FY23 economic survey took a balanced approach about climate change policies. It narrated the steps being taken by India to combat greenhouse gases and transition to cleaner sources of energy. But to achieve the stated goals, the survey emphasised the need for renewed support from developed countries, especially in the areas of finance, technology transfer and capacity-building. Importantly the survey rightly highlighted the limitations and economic costs of the climate change policies. State Experimentation With Wealth Taxes.

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The idea of a wealth tax as a panacea for budgetary shortfalls at the federal and state levels has been around since at least the 1930s. Recently, using wealth as a source of tax revenues has heated up. Starting with the 2020 Presidential campaign, Senator Bernie Sanders , Senator Elizabeth Warren and others floated the idea of a wealth tax at the federal level. This was not just rhetoric for an election, shortly after the election Senators Sanders and Warren published stand-alone bills. However, none of the stand-alone bills or another version of a targeted wealth tax ended up in any final budgetary legislation like the Build Back Better Act or the Inflation Reduction Act. Although a wealth tax did not end up in final legislation, things changed briefly in late 2021 when Senator Wyden proposed a “Billionaires Income Tax” to bridge the budget gap during the negotiation of the Build Back Better Act. Although the proposal … [Read more...] about State Experimentation With Wealth Taxes.

Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Planting more trees in cities could cut the number of people dying from high temperatures in summer, according to a study published in the Lancet medical journal on Tuesday, a strategy that could help mitigate the effects of climate change as it continues to drive temperatures upwards. Key Facts Cities experience much warmer temperatures than the rural areas surrounding them—a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect—a result of vegetation and green spaces being replaced with structures like roads and buildings that absorb heat. The effect is particularly problematic in summer, when temperatures can soar to dangerous levels and more people die of heat-related causes, but can be tackled by planting more trees, researchers suggest. An analysis of mortality data from some 57 million people living in 93 European cities in the summer of 2015—the most recent year for which data is … [Read more...] about Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds

Nets, Plastic, Underwater Crime – How To Stop Ocean Pollution

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We’ve all seen them. Images of countless turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks, and seals, dead and entangled in abandoned fish nets. The ocean is becoming an increasingly dangerous place for its inhabitants. And not because of the ‘eat or be eaten’ laws of nature - but because just by nature of being a creature that swims, you’re likely to eat plastic that may kill or maim you, or end up trapped and entangled in a net, left to struggle in an unnatural death until you starve, suffocate, or become prey. It’s one thing to talk about statistics and science, but the violence, pain and suffering our throwaway plastic culture has caused is something that can't be measured in numbers. The ocean has become a crime scene. Currently, there are an estimated 50-75 trillion pieces of plastic and microplastics in the ocean. The plastic either ends up forming giant garbage patches, or breaking down into microplastics. Plastic waste … [Read more...] about Nets, Plastic, Underwater Crime – How To Stop Ocean Pollution

Secure Gun Storage Is A Wellness Design And Real Estate Benefit

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You wouldn’t think that gun violence and residential design or real estate have anything in common, but there is a nexus: secure firearm storage. (Safety and security is a key facet of both wellness design and wellness real estate.) There is near universal agreement by the firearms industry, health professionals, law enforcement and both sides of the political aisle about the need for locking your weapons away from those who shouldn’t have access to them. This includes children, teens, individuals with mental disorders and the increasing prevalence of firearm thieves. Security Options Fourteen states currently have safe storage or gun lock requirements , according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Trigger locks can prevent someone from picking up and accidentally firing an unsecured weapon, but it won’t prevent a thief from stealing it and cutting the lock. That gun can then be used in future violent crimes. That’s why … [Read more...] about Secure Gun Storage Is A Wellness Design And Real Estate Benefit

The World Economic Forum Warns Of Polycrises

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are a handful of insightful reports I look forward to every year. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report is one of them. This year’s report is based on interviews with over 1,200 experts across academia, business, government, the international community and civil society. “’Global risk’” is defined as the possibility of the occurrence of an event or condition which, if it occurs, would negatively impact a significant proportion of global GDP, population or natural resources. The report lists the leading risks that are currently manifesting themselves. But it also looks at what the most important risks are likely to be in the short term - a horizon of two years, and the long term, over the next ten years. Current Global Risks Regular readers of the news should not be surprised to see the energy supply crisis, the cost-of-living crisis; and rising inflation as the top three risks. Interestingly, the … [Read more...] about The World Economic Forum Warns Of Polycrises
