Reddit’s former CEO is now in the forest-planting business

· January 19, 2021 ·

“The way that we originally calculated this solution was based on the most pessimistic view of what everyone else would do—which is that we assumed that the world would totally fail in reducing emissions and decarbonizing the grid,” he says. “Before this election went this way, you could actually say that might have been true. . . . The way to solve the problem is you have to create a large enough carbon sink to both offset all human emissions, as well as draw down the excess in the atmosphere within a reasonable amount of time.” … [Read more...] about Reddit’s former CEO is now in the forest-planting business

Why we need to “rewild” our environment

· January 19, 2021 ·

96% less land to make a burger than if it had been made from beef. A lifecycle analysis of Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger, also made from plants, found that it used 93% less land. So-called “cultured or “cell-based” meat, grown from animal cells in bioreactors, also shrinks land use and is poised to soon come to market, with the first regulatory approval recently announced. Companies working on dairy equivalents—such as vegan cheese that uses lab-grown milk proteins—can also eliminate the need for huge pastures. (If people voluntarily choose to eat less meat and dairy, that would also reduce land use, but it may be an easier sell to provide options that just have less impact on the environment.) … [Read more...] about Why we need to “rewild” our environment

· June 10, 2019 ·

Climate change could make it more difficult to grow in current agricultural hubs like California, where drought is likely to become more common, but Webb envisions that greenhouses could spread regionally throughout the country. Consumers will get fresher produce, and grocery stores will have the advantage of produce that lasts longer on the shelf. AppHarvest says that because of the savings in fuel from transportation, it can sell tomatoes at a competitive cost. “We plan to compete with conventional pricing,” Webb says. “We do not want Americans to pay more for fresh fruits and vegetables.” … [Read more...] about This startup is going to put one of the world’s largest sustainable greenhouses in coal country
