Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Today, Amazon announced they are acquiring One Medical , a health care company, for $3.9 billion. One goal, they say, is to dramatically improve patient experience. Health Care Friction Health care in the U.S. is full of friction for the patient. Complex insurance plans. Confusing provider networks that lead to big surprise charges. Lengthy voice menus and interminable hold times. Websites that seem like throwbacks to the 2000s. Weeks of waiting to see a doctor. And forms. Lots of forms. Even in high-tech Austin, nearly every visit to a physician’s office begins with a clipboard full of forms and disclaimers. Past promises of a less effortful experience have failed to deliver. Electronic records were supposed to follow the patient to every provider, avoiding the need for incomplete and inaccurate paper forms. Instead, we have a hodge-podge of incompatible, voluntary systems and no shortage of paper forms. A Rare … [Read more...] about Frictionless Healthcare? Amazon Wants To Try

Does The Microsoft And Netflix Deal Save Them Both? The Latest On A Big Ad Tech Shift
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As Netflix suffered the outrageous slings of post-pandemic fortune, it turned to Microsoft just last month to create a partnership for its launch of a new ad-supported subscriber plan. That Microsoft ( gaasssp! ) was the high-tech choice for an ad-tech partner was a move that, by the breathless reporting, seemed to surprise everyone. But it should have surprised no one. Though Netflix might well have chosen other partners, it aimed at Microsoft because it had been, as I reported here recently, quietly assembling an ad-tech juggernaut for years. And the Netflix deal is an endorsement of Microsoft’s rebound as high-tech competitor in the profitable ad world. After all, one could think of more than a few other potential ad tech partners Netflix might have chosen. Going into the ad business was a logical next step for some of the most premium, binge-worthy content on the internet. And what could be more sensible than … [Read more...] about Does The Microsoft And Netflix Deal Save Them Both? The Latest On A Big Ad Tech Shift
Tourism Minister visits Full Moon Party, supports later curfew
The Full Moon Party week is just wrapping on the island of Koh Pha Ngan, and while attendance was down, there was at least one special attendee that could influence the future of the party. Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakitprakarn visited Haad Rin, home of the iconic party that draws tens of thousands of tourists to the island each month. The minister saw the huge boost to tourism that the party brings as young tourists from around the country flock to the south of the island each month and fill accommodations, restaurants, bars, and shops and vowed to support the Full Moon Party. He observed people arriving on the island all day and well into the night on speedboats operating from Koh Samui for hours after the normal ferries have finished for the day, and saw people disappointed at early closures of what was an all-night party before Covid-19. He intends to request the Interior Ministry and Cabinet to make an exception to allow Full Moon Party to run until 4am, … [Read more...] about Tourism Minister visits Full Moon Party, supports later curfew
EU, South Korea say US plan for EV tax breaks may breach WTO rules
The European Union and South Korea have raised concerns about proposed U.S. tax credits for purchases of electric vehicles, saying they may discriminate against foreign-made vehicles and breach World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. Under the $430 billion climate and energy bill passed by the U.S. Senate on Sunday, Congress would lift the cap on the existing $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicle purchasers but impose restrictions, including barring vehicles not assembled in North America from receiving the credit. The ban on tax credits for vehicles assembled outside of North America would take effect as soon as President Joe Biden signs the legislation. The proposed legislation also includes provisions aimed at preventing use of battery components or critical minerals derived from China. "We think it's discriminatory, that it is discriminating against foreign producers in relation to U.S. producers," said European Commission spokesperson Miriam Garcia Ferrer. "Of course … [Read more...] about EU, South Korea say US plan for EV tax breaks may breach WTO rules
Before Bryan Cranston’s Mezcal Two Young Brits Travelled To Mexico And Created Something Unique
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s hard to find a business or a brand that isn’t currently being turned inside out by a wave of young and ambitious entrepreneurs. Add to that, over the past decade, tequila has been quietly rebelling—its image overhauled from slurpy frat boy shots to a high-brow spirit, designed to be proudly displayed on a mantle or bar cart and sipped with ease. Launched in 2013, by two under-30 British friends Max Davies-Gilbert and Robin Clough, Tequila Enemigo is at the forefront of that regime change. To start, they shattered the myth that tequila can’t be aged with their two award-winning expressions. Tequila Enemigo’s Añejo Cristalino 89 is aged for over a year, while Extra Añejo 00 stays put for at least three. Traditionally, tequila is aged in re-used Bourbon barrels, but Enemigo uses handmade American oak vessels, hewn from white Quercus alba oak that has been air dried for at least 26 months. It is immediately clear … [Read more...] about Before Bryan Cranston’s Mezcal Two Young Brits Travelled To Mexico And Created Something Unique
Reopened Freedom House Museum Focal Point For Exploring Alexandria, Virginia’s Rich Black History
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On this site humans were penned like livestock. “It was like a farmer’s barnyard in most respects, save it was so constructed that the outside world could never see the human cattle that were herded there.” Families obliterated. Children–10, 12, 15-years old; 2-years-old, 3-months-old–torn from their mothers, never to be reunited. People chained at the neck. Freezing. Sweltering. Starving. Naked. “Tell me citizens, where, under the sun, you can witness a spectacle more fiendish and shocking.” This site is not a death camp in Germany, it’s 1315 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA, in the shadow of the nation’s capital. The Capitol Dome is visible with the naked eye from the waterfront less than a mile away. The Freedom House Museum is what remains of a large complex dedicated to trafficking thousands of Black men, women and children between 1828 and 1861. The museum honors the lives and experiences of the … [Read more...] about Reopened Freedom House Museum Focal Point For Exploring Alexandria, Virginia’s Rich Black History
HBO’s ‘The Rehearsal’ Recap, Episode 5: Culture Clash
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Throughout Nathan For You and The Rehearsal , there’s an implicit assumption that the viewer understands Nathan is putting on a persona. That persona seems like an exaggerated version of Nathan’s awkwardness, but still a mask. In episode 5, “Apocalypto,” that mask seems to slip; we appear to catch a glimpse of who Nathan really is, if only for a moment. The episode begins with a sketch that Nathan and little “Adam” have come up with, which sees Nathan eating chocolate and pretending it’s poop. Obviously, this is the height of humor for a six year-old, but when the two show Angela the sketch, she can’t conceal her disgust - in fact, she repeatedly brings it up throughout the episode, seemingly infuriated. Angela has never really pretended to like Nathan, but now, her disdain is on full display. The fantasy get surprisingly real when Nathan invites his parents to come and visit, and his mother observes that the … [Read more...] about HBO’s ‘The Rehearsal’ Recap, Episode 5: Culture Clash
Meet The Celebrity Spirits Whisperer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Even if you’ve been hiding under The Rock for the past few years, you’d still be acutely aware of the fact that celebrities have come to crowd the contemporary spirits space. It seems as though news of another A-lister launching their own whiskey, gin, tequila arrives at an almost weekly clip these days. You know most of the names, yet you probably haven't heard of Ken Austin. If you’re famous and launching a booze brand, he’s a great person to know. Think of him as sort of a celebrity spirits whisperer. For a little over a decade the serial entrepreneur and dealmaker has been in the rooms where the handshakes happen. In conjunction with some of the biggest names in entertainment, he’s developed a massively successful trio of liquor labels. The run started with Tequila Avión back in 2009. It’s a brand that many remember as a plot line in Entourage —the HBO hit that blurred the line between fictional and … [Read more...] about Meet The Celebrity Spirits Whisperer
Is appointment of Comelec chair constitutional?
A professor and habitual reader asked me three questions: “(1) Do you believe the ad interim nomination or appointment of Compañero George Garcia as chairman of the Commission on Election [Comelec] can withstand constitutional scrutiny? (2) Should he not have declined the appointment given that he has so many clients, including the President, with pending cases and administrative problems in the Commission? And (3) Can Saidamen Pangarungan and Aimee Torrefranca-Neri be returned to the Comelec?” LET US BEGIN THE ANSWERS WITH THE CONSTITUTION which states that the Comelec “Chairman and the Commissioners shall be appointed by the President with the consent of the Commission on Appointments [CA] for a term of seven years without reappointment … Appointment to a vacancy shall be only for the unexpired term of the predecessor. In no case shall any Member be appointed or designated in a temporary or acting capacity.” (Article IX-C, Section 1, paragraph 2) In early February this year … [Read more...] about Is appointment of Comelec chair constitutional?
