When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) wanted to fight animal poachers–illegal hunters of wildlife–they decided to bring in an unorthodox weapon: Drones. But these drones were different from the killer Predators of public imagination. Instead, they were unarmed, superlightweight, and users launch them by throwing them into the air–in fact, they are heavily modified model aircraft. After negotiations, Nepal was chosen as a pilot site for the wildlife drones. First launched in mid-2012, the WWF drones offered a new, experimental method of stopping poachers. advertisement advertisement Now, wildlife-protecting drones are coming to the rest of the world. Last week, Google announced they would help the WWF purchase African and Asian poacher-seeking UAVs. As part of Google’s 2012 Global Impact Awards program, the WWF received $5 million to buy similar unarmed drones to watch and track African wildlife poachers. “We want to use integrated technologies to … [Read more...] about The Google-Funded Drones That Hunt Illegal Hunters
advertisement advertisement “Not all that long ago,” unfortunately, refers to seconds or minutes, not years. These are the questions that are still being asked in fluorescent-bathed marketing department conference rooms at this very moment. And they are all the wrong ones. If improving the very heart and soul of the product offering sounds like something the CEO and operations guys should be worrying about, that is correct. What happened? Well, digital happened. In the Pleistocene age of marketing (i.e., a few months ago), the equivalent of a sharp stick and a big rock was advertising. All you could do with it was toss one-way messages over the wall, and hope a shred of knowledge or persuasion would reach the other side. When at its very best (and it has surely been at its … [Read more...] about Hey Marketing Team: You’re Asking All The Wrong Questions About Your Digital Strategy
Advertising and content marketing used to be nearly interchangeable. Branded content was typically developed as a by-product of a traditional ad unit, creative or original enough to stand out and shine on its own merits. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Magic was the prerogative of Hollywood and Madison Avenue. There was always a mystery as to how content was created, with only a few people understanding the technical landscape behind the illusion. Now with the shift to digital, the world of content has expanded. From tweets and … [Read more...] about Don’t Forget The Awesome: 5 Steps To Creating Brand Content
Ayton Performance’s headquarters, such as they are, currently consist of a garage on Long Island full of computers and electronic testing equipment. If you happened to wander in, nothing about the scene would convey the company’s line of work. “The only thing that would tell you,” says owner Ethan Bregman, “is the wall full of trophies.” advertisement advertisement His race car engine design firm has worked on cars that have won the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and IndyCar races. Ayton has worked with the motor sports divisions of Honda, Porsche, GM, and McLaren, perfecting small auto parts that can make a big difference in a sport of seconds. Until now, though, the nearly 10-year-old company has never had a home quite befitting its identity as, well, not your average New York business. Bregman is finally building that shop, somewhat improbably, on a long-abandoned brownfield lot in the heart of Brooklyn. He purchased the … [Read more...] about Cleaning Up Polluted Land With … Race Cars?
