Takeover target of Nintendo family office asks for Japan government probe

March 28, 2023 by business.inquirer.net

TOKYO   -The Japanese construction company targeted for takeover by the family office linked to Nintendo Co’s founder is pushing back against the fund and has asked the government to investigate alleged breaches of foreign ownership rules. Toyo Construction Co, the marine construction company now 27 percent owned by Yamauchi-No.10 Family Office (YFO), made the request to the government this month, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The move by Toyo, which maintains port facilities and constructs seawalls and other key parts of infrastructure, show how rules over national security can increasingly play a role in takeover battles. YFO, which manages nearly $1.5 billion of assets for members of Nintendo’s founding Yamauchi family, last year effectively blocked a takeover attempt for Toyo from an industry rival, saying it would offer a higher price. YFO has amassed most of its 27-percent stake through three related investment companies registered in the Cayman Islands, each of … [Read more...] about Takeover target of Nintendo family office asks for Japan government probe

Teriyaki Madness: Building A Japanese Restaurant Powerhouse Through Franchising

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Experts attribute that the fascination with Japanese food in the U.S. started in New York City back in 1964 when wrestler turned restaurateur Hiroake “Rocky” Aoki launched Benihana. Its hibachi steak was prepared right in front of guests on a grill at the table and created quite the stir. In fact, Benihana is still going strong with about 75 eateries in about 25 states. Since then, a slew of Japanese restaurant chains such as Jinya Ramen Bar and Kura Sushi, regaled for its serving sushi on its revolving conveyor belt, have flourished in the U.S. But the Japanese restaurant chain that has been most adept at expanding has been Teriyaki Madness, based in Denver, Co. It has grown due to the power of franchising since 129 of its 130 restaurants are franchised. For example, in 2022 it expanded by 29 locations; every one of which was franchised. Of those 130 locations, 126 of them are based in the U.S., spanning 26 states. … [Read more...] about Teriyaki Madness: Building A Japanese Restaurant Powerhouse Through Franchising

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) today issued a complaint against Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world, alleging that the firm put profits over compliance and committed “numerous violations of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations.” Also mentioned were Changpeng Zhao, the Binance founder and CEO, and former Chief Compliance Officer Samuel Lim, who is cited widely throughout the complaint and allegedly orchestrated much of the malfeasance. Today’s filing is the latest in a series of questionable behaviors by the company. However, while the CFTC is seeking disgorgement of profits, civil monetary penalties, registration bans and a permanent injunction against violations of the CEA and CFTC regulations, the long-term impact of this filing is unclear. Specifically the document, filed today in the federal courthouse in Chicago, alleges that the company offered crypto derivatives, … [Read more...] about U.S. Regulator Says That Binance Illegally Helped Americans Trade On Its Exchange

What Is Chelsea’s Plan For Mykhailo Mudryk And Is He Doing Enough To Impress?

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin An image circulated around social media after England’s 2-0 win over Ukraine that depicted Bukayo Saka skipping away from Mykhailo Mudryk, pained expression, sat on the ground. Arsenal fans took delight in the sight of their winger prompting such a moment of reflection from a player who could have joined them in January. Mudryk was Arsenal’s top target for months before Chelsea swooped in. Now at Stamford Bridge instead, the 22-year-old has struggled to find his feet for his new club, going six Premier PINC League matches without finding the back of the net. Substituted after 60 minutes against England, Mudryk looked low on confidence. Potter has settled on a front three of Joao Felix, Kai Havertz and one other with Christian Pulisic possibly ahead of Mudryk in the pecking order as things currently stand. This raises the question - what is Chelsea’s plan for the Ukrainian winger? How will Mudryk fit into Potter’s … [Read more...] about What Is Chelsea’s Plan For Mykhailo Mudryk And Is He Doing Enough To Impress?

Know The Red Flag In Your Portfolio

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Travis Forman, Portfolio Manager at Strategic Private Wealth Counsel - Harbourfront Wealth Management . Not to alarm you, but there may be a red flag in your portfolio. You might have a sound investment plan and be adequately diversified, but how are you protecting your purchasing power? Do you have inflation-fighting assets in your portfolio? Whether we acknowledge it or not, we are in an era of higher inflation. Just a couple of years ago, inflation was low, and interest rates were at rock bottom. As we know, this has changed significantly since then. While peak inflation of 9.1% in the United States and 8.1% in Canada may no longer be a reality, a swift return to the days of 2% inflation is also unlikely. If you need to hear it from someone other than me, the multinational investment corporation BlackRock agrees. Turtle Launches Electric Bike Cab To Whisk Riders Around Streets Of Paris

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Micro-mobility startup Turtle has launched an on-demand electric bike service that allows riders to order via an application a bike cab driven by a chauffeur. Turtle says its new urban passenger transport service targets both Parisians and tourists who want a unique and affordable alternative to ride-sharing services like Uber. The vehicle has three wheels and the company says that it emits no emissions and is made entirely of recycled material. The launch of the service comes after 5 months of testing including 3,100 trips. Because Turtle can use Paris’ growing network of bike lanes, the company is betting that it can deliver faster trips than cars or even public transportation, particularly during periods of heavy traffic. To attract riders, the application will display the price before the ride begins. And all the drivers have completed a training program and will be salaried employees rather than independent … [Read more...] about Turtle Launches Electric Bike Cab To Whisk Riders Around Streets Of Paris

NASA’s Webb Telescope Just Took A Big Step Forward In The Search For Another Earth

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Astronomers using the most advanced observatory in NASA’s arsenal of space-gazing toys reported a big first on Monday: the James Webb Space Telescope was able to detect the light from a small, rocky exoplanet similar to our own but orbiting another star some 40 light years away. To be clear, this is far from the first time our observatories have led to the discovery of exoplanets beyond our solar system. Thousands have been cataloged over the past few decades. But most are discovered by measuring slight differences in the light from distant stars that tell us either a planet is passing in front of or gently tugging on its home sun. Astronomers have also directly observed the light from other exoplanets as well, but they tend to be much larger gas giant worlds. The Webb team reports this is the first detection of light directly emitted by an Earth-like exoplanet and that’s a big deal because this type of measurement … [Read more...] about NASA’s Webb Telescope Just Took A Big Step Forward In The Search For Another Earth
