BOCAUE, Bulacan -- Jason Perkins of the Phoenix Fuel Masters has been named the Rookie of the Year of the PBA's 43rd season. Perkins, a former De La Salle University standout, was selected fourth overall in the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft by the Fuel Masters. He averaged 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in his first year in the league. He edged out fellow Lasallian Jeron Teng of the Alaska Aces for top rookie honors, along with Magnolia’s Robbie Herndon, Blackwater’s Raymar Jose, and Rain or Shine’s Rey Nambatac. Perkins formally received the trophy during the Leo Awards, held at the Philippine Arena on Sunday. San Miguel's Christian Standhardinger and NLEX's Kiefer Ravena, the top two picks in the 2017 draft, were not eligible for the award after failing to meet the minimum number of games required. The Fil-German Standhardinger had missed the entirety of the All-Filipino Cup as he was still playing for Hong Kong in the ASEAN Basketball League, while Ravena is … [Read more...] about Phoenix’s Perkins is PBA Rookie of the Year
MANILA, Philippines—Not even a month after wrapping up its 43rd season, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is ready to begin a new year. The league opens its 44th season on Sunday at the Philippine Arena, with Barangay Ginebra and TNT KaTropa getting the ball rolling in the 2019 PBA All-Filipino Cup. Before that, however, the PBA will officially close its 43rd season with the Leo Awards to honor its brightest stars from last year. The three teams under the San Miguel Corp. — San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra, and Magnolia — have been tagged as favorites in the Philippine Cup after ruling the three conferences last year, with the Beermen favored to annex a fifth straight All-Filipino crown. It would be foolish to count out any team, however, especially after a brief but busy offseason that saw several franchises overhaul their rosters and draft talented rookies who can make an immediate impact. MANILA, Philippines—With the Philippines hosting the Southeast Asian Games later this year, the country's basketball stakeholders are thinking of sending the best basketball team possible to defend the gold medal. Collegiate stars and Gilas Pilipinas cadets have done well in the past few editions of the SEA Games, with a team led by Kiefer Ravena, Ray Parks and Christian Standhardinger delivering another gold medal in the 2017 tournament in Kuala Lumpur. However, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Ricky Vargas, who also serves as PBA chairman, said Tuesday that the sports body is thinking of sending professional players to the regional competition, which will be held on November 30 to December 11. READ: Marcial to look at previous decisions in Parks' case The PBA said it will fully support Vargas if the POC decides to go in this direction. "Wala pang discussion, pero nagparamdam na si chairman (Vargas)," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial. "Kung anong gusto ni … [Read more...] about PBA stars may suit up for Philippines in 2019 SEA Games
