Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Taiwan is stocking up on air- and ground-launched rockets that, in the event of war with China, could pummel Chinese invasion forces before they even leave their bases. Taipei’s possible, multi-billion-dollar acquisition of American-made Standoff Land-Attack Missiles—Expanded Response and High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems could help to counter China’s own expanding missile arsenal. Beijing long has planned to lob hundreds or even thousands of missiles at Taiwan as a prelude to any invasion. Now Taipei aims to lob its own missiles right back. “HIMARS and SLAM-ER are cutting-edge technologically and will diversify and improve the capacity of Taiwan's counter-strike missile force,” said Ian Easton, a Taiwan expert with the Project 2049 Institute in Virginia. The U.S. State Department in late October announced the potential sale to Taipei of 135 SLAM-ER missiles for $1 billion as well as 11 HIMARS launchers … [Read more...] about To Thwart Invasion, Taiwan Points Powerful New Missiles At Chinese Bases

Posco Chemical breaks ground on artificial graphite anode facility in Pohang
Automatic robots manufacture artificial graphite anodes, the key material for EV batteries, at Posco Chemical's Pohang facility in North Gyeongsang. [POSCO CHEMICAL] Ground was broken for Posco Chemical’s artificial graphite-based anode facility in Pohang, North Gyeongsang, the company said Wednesday. The facility will have 10,000 tons of annual capacity, and will start production in the second half of 2024. That will boost its total capacity to 18,000 tons which is enough to make batteries for 470,000 electric vehicles (EVs). The company has already been operating an 8,000-ton facility there. Graphite is a core raw material of anodes, one of four critical components to make lithium-ion batteries. Artificial graphite accounted for more than 83 percent of the total anodes market as of 2022, according to data from the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency. It is known to provide longer battery expectancy and reduced charging time compared to natural graphite. Biden Admin Blocks Mining Of ‘World’s Largest Undeveloped’ Ore Deposit As It Pushes Copper-Heavy EVs, Wind Turbines
The Biden Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final determination that will block the mining of necessary material for electric vehicles (EV) despite pushing automakers to ensure that EVs make up 50% of all vehicles sold in the country by 2030. The determination will prevent the further mining of 1.4 billion tons of copper, gold, molybdenum, silver and rhenium from the area, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. A standard vehicle uses 18 to 50 pounds of copper and an EV powered by a battery requires 85 to 183 pounds of copper, with copper demand expected to increase by 1,700 kilotons by 2027, according to the Copper Development Association. The Biden administration is pushing automakers to ensure that electric vehicles (EV) make up 50% of all vehicles sold in the country by 2030, but on Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final determination that will block the mining of necessary material for EV batteries in one of … [Read more...] about Biden Admin Blocks Mining Of ‘World’s Largest Undeveloped’ Ore Deposit As It Pushes Copper-Heavy EVs, Wind Turbines
Biden Poses In Electric Car That Has A Higher Carbon Footprint Than A Gas-Powered SUV
President Joe Biden took to Twitter Monday to promote his administration’s new electric vehicle tax credits, posing in a car which is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions on average than smaller gas-powered cars. Roughly 60% of power generated in the U.S. is generated by burning fossil fuels, the Hummer EV Pickup that Biden was photographed in is responsible for, on average, 341 grams of carbon dioxide per mile, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). However, the Hummer EV Pickup is responsible for roughly 50 more grams per mile of carbon dioxide emissions than the Toyota RAV4 SUV and BMW 3 sedan, and roughly 70 grams more than the Toyota Corolla, according to Quartz. The Hummer EV Pickup costs roughly $110,000, well in excess of the $80,000 limit for pickups, SUVs and vans to qualify for the $7,500 tax credit for purchasing an electric vehicle provided by the Inflation Reduction Act , according to the IRS. “President … [Read more...] about Biden Poses In Electric Car That Has A Higher Carbon Footprint Than A Gas-Powered SUV
GM To Make $650 Million Investment In Key Nevada Lithium Mine. But There’s A Problem
GM announced plans to invest $650 million in a Nevada lithium mine, operated by Lithium Americas, a firm whose largest shareholder has ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), according to multiple reports. Through subsidiary GFL International, Chinese mining giant Ganfeng Lithium owns 11% of Lithium Americas , a stake nearly four times greater than the next largest investor, according to CNBC. Wang Xiaoshen, a member of Lithium Americas’ board of directors and executive vice president of Ganfeng, has previously worked for Chinese state owned businesses, while Ganfeng president Li Liangbin is a member of multiple CCP-linked groups, according to reporting by the Washington Free Beacon. Lithium Americas’ Thacker Pass mine has previously drawn criticism from Republican members of Congress, citing the national security risk of depending on Chinese companies for critical resources like lithium. Through 2019, China accounted for roughly 60% of all lithium processed … [Read more...] about GM To Make $650 Million Investment In Key Nevada Lithium Mine. But There’s A Problem

Mazda Says EV Era Is No Time For The MX-5 Miata To Die
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You would be forgiven for thinking electrification will surely drive a nail into the coffin of specialist, lightweight sportscars like the Mazda Miata. But that, Mazda says, is not the case. Quite the opposite in fact, as the company has confirmed this week that the Miata “will never die.” This shot of good news for fans of two-seater convertibles the world over came from Martijn ten Brink, chief executive of Mazda in Europe. Answering questions from Autocar about Mazda’s plans for the next generation of Miata, known in some markets as the MX-5, ten Brink said: “How do you stay true to the concept of what the car stands for taking it into the next generation of technologies? That’s not been decided. But I think for Mazda it would be fair to say that the MX-5 will never die.” With rules in some countries demanding car manufacturers sell only hybrid vehicles with a meaningful electric range from 2030, and shift … [Read more...] about Mazda Says EV Era Is No Time For The MX-5 Miata To Die
Disney’s $13 Million Drone Extravaganza
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Disney has spent an estimated $13 million on a new drone show at its theme park complex in Paris which premiered on Saturday and features Marvel Comics characters such as Iron Man and Spider-Man. Called Avengers: Power The Night, the eight-minute show is a whole new world for Disney. It is the theme park giant's first daily drone show featuring Marvel characters and, unlike its previous displays, this one creates 3D shapes which seem to twist and turn in mid-air. It's more than a high-tech trick as the 500 drones take the form of props which play a role in the show itself. Fittingly, the show can be seen from courtyard of the movie-themed Walt Disney DIS DIS Studios park at Disneyland Paris and the action begins when the sun goes down. The backdrop for the spectacle is suitably cinematic. It is held high above the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a soaring skyscraper that looks like it has come from the golden age … [Read more...] about Disney’s $13 Million Drone Extravaganza
GM Announces Production Of All-Electric Hummer EV SUV
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin And here we all thought, in 2002, that the big guy wouldn’t last. The Hummer was just too big for its own good. Guzzled too much gas. Was ostentatious, and driven by DBs. “And your point?” said fans. How things have changed. Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC and Buick, told media guests at a GMC business update event Monday regarding the company’s all-new Hummer EV SUV: "This is just, I think, the most sought-after vehicle in the world right now. It really is a super truck as we positioned it." Customers will begin to see deliveries toward the end of the first quarter. GM received more than 90,000 reservations for the Hummer pickup and SUV combined, with numbers split mostly evenly, according to Aldred. Production had begun with the (sold-out) Edition 1, which had a starting price of $105,595 when reservations began being accepted in 2021. There are challenges, of course, much of which are … [Read more...] about GM Announces Production Of All-Electric Hummer EV SUV
Major League Baseball’s Expansion Paradox
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If 2001 to 2005 taught us anything about Major League Baseball, it was that the league has considerable demand. At a time when then-commissioner Bud Selig and the owners floated the folly of “contracting” the league to 28 teams by shuttering the Montreal Expos, and possibly the Minnesota Twins, whether it was legal action to thwart it, or the idea that relocation was a more favorable option, markets around the U.S. suddenly jumped up and said they’d take a team. In 2005 that culminated in the Expos moving to Washington, D.C. where they were rechristened the Washington Nationals. The rest, as they say, is history. Since then, Rob Manfred took over as commissioner, and MLB – with reoccurring labor deals with the players the possible exception – settled into a steady groove. Revenue continued to climb. The one thing that has grown is the number of clubs in the league. In October 2015, I interviewed Manfred where the … [Read more...] about Major League Baseball’s Expansion Paradox
