A map released Tuesday by research and development outfit Hyperion Gray is bringing to life the often misunderstood and decried corner of the internet. In what the company believes is an unprecedented effort to illuminate hidden services on the dark web, it allows anyone to zoom in and out of images containing the homepage of each website based on the Tor network. (Tor, run by the Tor Project, is designed to provide anonymity for its users and the hidden services within are considered to make up the largest section of the dark web.) Be warned, though. The content within the Dark Web Map can be graphic. As Hyperion Gray's disclaimer notes: "These sites include mature and/or offensive content, including pornography, violence and racism." Healing Space | Why no one can really win in a family feud
Research shows that among members of a family, feuds and resentment affect some more than others. (Illustration by Suneesh K.) Note to readers: Healing Space is a weekly series that helps you dive into your mental health and take charge of your wellbeing through practical DIY self-care methods . Prince Harry has done a couple of high-profile interviews, written a tell-all, pointed fingers, apportioned blame, raged on every outlet available to him, an already high-profile privileged person of power with access to all the platforms on earth. He has spent a lot of emotion, yet reconciliation seems distant at this point. An apology might well be the simple gesture that heals everything, and it might never be enough. Family feuds are tricky. Sunlight and apologies don’t always help. Distance often does. And being right is often at odds with being reconciled. In families you have to choose: you’re stuck and you choose to stay stuck, or you’re out of there, estranged, and … [Read more...] about Healing Space | Why no one can really win in a family feud

Uber’s New Math: Increase Prices And Squeeze Driver Pay
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Uber has been a poster child of US zero interest rate policies (ZIRP) over the past decade, stimulating unprecedented levels of private and public capital investment in companies pursuing global domination — profits be damned. Between its venture capital funding rounds and IPO, Uber raised $32 billion before and during CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s reign, fueling the dubious distinction of raising and losing more money than any startup in history. Until this year, the company was making a perfectly logical choice to deploy its bountiful capital to push for growth over profits, mirroring investor priorities in the cheap money era. In fact, Dara (as he is often, familiarly called) lost more money during his first four years as CEO than founder/CEO Travis Kalanick did during the company’s first six years. But times (and interest rates) have changed, prompting Dara to now espouse the new math he described on a recent podcast : … [Read more...] about Uber’s New Math: Increase Prices And Squeeze Driver Pay

You don’t want to know where your shrimp comes from
If you rang in the new year with some shrimp cocktail in hand, you weren’t alone. Shrimp is the most popular seafood among Americans, with industry groups reporting that we eat about five pounds of shrimp each year, per person. We hear a lot about the negative effects of industrial animal agriculture on our planet , not to mention the animal cruelty inherent in it— but these conversations are almost invariably focused on land animals raised as livestock, particularly cows and chickens. If seafood seems to have an eco-friendly halo by contrast, that’s probably more due to our own educational blind spots than any true environmental superiority. Despite their small size, shrimp carry some major ethical baggage that includes the destruction of critical environmental features as well as horrific human rights abuses and chilling acts of animal cruelty. A major reason we’re able to eat as much shrimp as we do is that it’s much more affordable and accessible than it was half a … [Read more...] about You don’t want to know where your shrimp comes from
How To Model Anti-Racist Behaviors And Talk To Children About Race
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Existing racial tensions reached a crescendo in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd and led to widespread discussions about anti-Black racism, police brutality, and overall race relations in the U.S. Although the same issues are just as prevalent and alarming almost three years later, the urgency behind many of those discussions has now disappeared and the country seems to have gone back to business as usual. But that does not mean that parents can and should not talk about issues related to race and racial relations in American. Although children are typically not developmentally prepared to understand the concept of racism until four to six years of age, pediatricians say that awareness of racial difference can develop as early as infancy. And for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) children, being exposed to discrimination can result in toxic stress that impacts them for the rest of their lives, according to … [Read more...] about How To Model Anti-Racist Behaviors And Talk To Children About Race

Thailand to Release 29 Violent Offenders on Electronic Monitoring
Thailand’s Corrections Department is set to release 29 inmates to be the first to be required to wear an electronic tag as part of a new law aimed at preventing repeat offenders of sexual and violent crimes . According to Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin, the law could see former convicts monitored by the newly established Justice Safety Observation Ad Hoc Center for up to ten years. He also stated that the Criminal Court has the authority to both shorten and lengthen the period of post-release surveillance and re-incarcerate former inmates who violate the terms of their release. The law, published in the Royal Gazette on October 25, last year, went into effect on Monday. Among other controversial provisions, the new law seeks to reduce reoffending among sex offenders and violent criminals by allowing the chemical castration of convicted rapists before release. According to Mr. Somsak, the law was approved quickly, after a year and nine months of preparation, before … [Read more...] about Thailand to Release 29 Violent Offenders on Electronic Monitoring
