Markets to Focus on Retail Stock Earnings

May 16, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

This will be a big week for the retail sector, with fresh data and earnings due. On Tuesday, the Commerce Department is likely to show retail sales were up 0.8% in April, following a 0.6% gain the month before. The data comes after the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index slumped to its lowest level in nearly 11 years in May, as worries about inflation persist. Also on Tuesday, Walmart is expected to report a fall in first-quarter profit, hurt by higher shipping and other supply chain costs. On Wednesday, Target is similarly expected to report a fall in first-quarter earnings hurt by higher shipping, warehousing and labor costs. Comments on consumer demand and inflation will also be in focus. Home improvement chains Home Depot and Lowe’s will post their results on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Analysts are projecting a decline in first-quarter revenue as higher mortgage rates and prices weigh on customers. So far this year, Walmart ( WMT ) shares are … [Read more...] about Markets to Focus on Retail Stock Earnings

Golden arches to go dark in Russia as McDonald’s exits after 30 years

May 17, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A BENGALURU (May 16): McDonald's Corp on Monday became one of the biggest global brands to exit Russia, laying out plans to sell all its restaurants after operating in the country for more than 30 years, following the invasion of Ukraine. The world's largest burger chain, which owns about 84% of its nearly 850 restaurants in Russia, will take a related non-cash charge of up to US$1.4 billion following its sale. McDonald's had in March decided to close its restaurants in the country, including the iconic Pushkin Square location in central Moscow — a symbol of flourishing American capitalism in the dying embers of the Soviet Union. The burger chain represented the thawing of Cold War tensions and became a way to sample Western food and spirit for millions of people, even though the cost of a burger was several times bigger than the daily budgets of many city dwellers. "Some might argue that providing access to food and continuing to employ tens of thousands … [Read more...] about Golden arches to go dark in Russia as McDonald’s exits after 30 years

When will Democrats deliver on their promise to restore net neutrality?

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

When the Federal Communications Commission voted to institute strong net neutrality rules in 2015, it was because millions of people from across the political spectrum spoke out. If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that cable and phone companies shouldn’t be able to screw us over more than they already do, or dictate which websites and apps we can use. advertisement advertisement When the Trump administration’s notorious FCC chairman Ajit Pai repealed those Obama-era protections in 2017, the move sparked some of the largest online protests in human history. Net neutrality supporters crowdfunded billboards, protested in the streets, and drove millions of phone calls, comments, and emails to regulators and lawmakers. To this day, the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality remains the government action that received the most filed opposition comments by individual people in history.
