Every Celebrities’ Favorite Home: The Irresistible Hotel Bel-Air

August 6, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are places celebrities go to be seen, and there are rare places where celebrities go not to be seen. There is only one place, though, that has elegantly enveloped celebrities into its 12 acre seemingly secret garden for more than 70 years: The Hotel Bel-Air. The Prince of Wales supposedly said, “I slept better in the Presidential Suite of the Bel Air than in any other hotel in the world. Tom Cruise once remarked: “I’ve lived at Hotel Bel-Air, and I always feel very comfortable there.” What is it about this classic hotel, complete with gliding swans, no less, that endures as Hollywood’s haven? On a recent stay at the Hotel Bel-Air, I think I uncovered it. The top quality required to endure as a celebrity sanctuary: discretion by design. While located only a mile or so off of Sunset Blvd, the drive to the Hotel Bel-Air is nondescript along a narrow road marked by colossal hedges and fancy gates that shroud the mansions … [Read more...] about Every Celebrities’ Favorite Home: The Irresistible Hotel Bel-Air

Extending Coby White Makes Future Trade Easier For Chicago Bulls

August 11, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Chicago Bulls are in a potentially difficult spot with guard Coby White, who is currently eligible for a contract extension. The 22-year-old will become a restricted free agent (RFA) in the summer of 2023 if he receives no extension, and that can be a bit of a drag for both parties. Look no further than the ongoing Collin Sexton situation in Cleveland these days. The former 24-point scorer has been offered $40 million over three seasons, which is substantially below market value for what he provides. Yet, the Cavs might get away with it due to the small market that remains out there. For White, the situation will be much the same next year, if he enters RFA. Seemingly, the Bulls should then be in the driver's seat and be able to dictate his future. There's some truth to that, but White's cap hold could complicate matters for Chicago. $22.2 million cap hold White is, indirectly, on the books for $22.2 million … [Read more...] about Extending Coby White Makes Future Trade Easier For Chicago Bulls

SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch Demonstration Could Cultivate Interest In An Air Tractor-Based Sky Warden

May 25, 2021 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In rural areas of Africa where U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) says it’s looking for an armed ISR airplane to replace the Pilatus PC-12-based UC-28 Dracos it currently flies, the Sky Warden wouldn’t look out of place. It’s based on Air Tractor’s familiar AT-802 agricultural application airplane. About 36 of these “crop dusters” already operate on the continent. That could be a factor in the selection of a Draco replacement if SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch acquisition gets funding. Earlier this month, SOCOM awarded five companies a total of $19.2 million to demonstrate potential low-cost aircraft to fly surveillance and deliver strikes in austere locations like Africa. The potential “armed overwatch” role such an airplane would fill is seen by some observers as an extension of the Air Force’s aborted Light Attack aircraft program (2009-2020). Congress was wary of that effort and views Armed Overwatch with a … [Read more...] about SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch Demonstration Could Cultivate Interest In An Air Tractor-Based Sky Warden

Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient

May 20, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Windmill wants to solve one of summer’s most intractable problems: the blight of ugly air conditioners. The New York-based startup launched in 2020 with a 10,000-person waitlist for its $415 smart AC, a sleek window unit that has more in common, design-wise, with Apple’s HomePods than the hulking air conditioners of yore. The first run of units sold out within 48 hours. advertisement advertisement This April, Windmill’s wifi-enabled air conditioners got a mini makeover with the reveal of a smaller $365 unit —a 6,000-BTU AC that cools up to 250-sq ft., which makes it ideal for a city apartment or office space. (Compared to the original 8.3k BTU $415 unit that we reviewed last year.) The line expansion arrives alongside the announcement of a $10 million fundraising round and the addition of Walmart to the direct-to-consumer brand’s list of big-box retailers, which already includes Home Depot and P.C. Richard & Son . Founded by Ryan … [Read more...] about Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient

The UI of air-conditioning is hell on earth

August 12, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

A few days ago, I almost tore my digital thermostat off the wall because I couldn’t understand its demonic user interface. I had no manual for it, and I couldn’t find it on the internet. So, boiling with Joe Pesci fury, I couldn’t stop fantasizing about ways to retaliate against the sadistic monster who designed this horror. advertisement advertisement Central air-conditioning came with the apartment I’m renting and, while I like staying cool, I hate its interface with the fury of a thousand suns—which, coincidentally, is exactly the temperature of Madrid, where I live these days. I didn’t want to do anything arcane with my thermostat; I simply wanted to program it to optimize the energy consumption because the price of electricity in Spain is now between $1 million and $2 million per watt. Last month, we paid three times our usual bill; I just wanted to use the AC rationally so my family could avoid living in Satan’s sauna without burning down the … [Read more...] about The UI of air-conditioning is hell on earth

The suspect, Robert Crimo, 21, made his plea on a grand jury indictment during an arraignment hearing in front of Lake County Circuit Court Judge Victoria Rossetti, the office of Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart said. JPMorgan gold traders found guilty in Chicago spoofing trial

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 11): The former head of the JPMorgan Chase & Co. precious-metals business and his top gold trader were convicted in Chicago on charges they manipulated markets for years, handing the US government a win in its long crackdown on bogus “spoofing” orders. Michael Nowak and Gregg Smith were found guilty Wednesday by a federal jury after a three-week trial and more than eight days of deliberations. Prosecutors presented evidence that included detailed trading records, chat logs and testimony by former co-workers who “pulled back the curtain” on how Nowak and Smith moved precious-metals prices up and down for profit from 2008 to 2016. A salesman on the desk, Jeffrey Ruffo, was acquitted of charges he participated in the conspiracy. The case was the biggest yet by the US Justice Department, which alleged the precious-metals business at JPMorgan was run as a criminal enterprise. Nowak, the managing director in charge of the desk, and Smith, its top trader, … [Read more...] about JPMorgan gold traders found guilty in Chicago spoofing trial

August 13, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Trey Lance took his first step as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback and the face of the franchise Friday evening at Levi’s Stadium. Lance, 22, started San Francisco’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, officially beginning the post-Jimmy Garoppolo era in Northern California. Those who worked with him on the field came away impressed as San Francisco defeated the Aaron Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers by the score of 28-21. Lance also got to work with rookie third-round pick Danny Gray in his two possessions to open the game, connecting with the wide receiver on an eye-opening 76-yard touchdown pass. ADVERTISEMENT The young quarterback talked about his relationship with Gray and what it could mean moving forward on the season. “I think it’s just reps and trust. Danny’s done a great job all camp. He’s a playmaker and he’s fun too throw to,” Lance told reporters from the podium . … [Read more...] about Trey Lance Shines, And Other Top Notes From San Francisco 49ers Preseason Opener

Rupee opens higher against US dollar

August 11, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative image Indian rupee on Thursday opened higher against the US dollar tracking gains in its Asian peers on optimism over a slower pace of US rate hikes. Traders are now cautious ahead of consumer price inflation data on Friday. The home currency opened at 79.24 a dollar and touched a high and a low of 79.24 and 79.26 respectively. At 9.10am, the currency was trading at 79.26 a dollar, up 0.34% from its previous close. Overnight, the data on US consumer inflation slowed to 8.5% in July from 9.1% in June.  The slower US inflation was driven by deflation in some Pandemic related sectors -- used cars, airline fares, and lodging, while shelter inflation held firm. Headline inflation was flat on the month (8.5% YoY), and core inflation more than halved (0.31%) from the monthly run-rate in June and was unchanged at 5.9% YoY. " The path to disinflation is now more about how quickly it decelerates and how the pace shapes the Fed’s policies in the next 6-12 months.
