JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) project is expected to cause some congestion in the city centre here, says Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman (pic). Ukraine village flooded intentionally to prevent Russian attack
A water pump station is seen at a flooded area after Ukrainian military forces opened a dam to flood an residencial area in order to stop advance of Russian forces. The intentional flooding of a small village north of Kyiv that created a quagmire and submerged cellars and fields, but prevented a Russian attack on the capital, was worth all the sacrifice, residents said. Ukrainian forces opened a dam early in the war in Demydiv, causing the Irpin River to flood the village and thousands of acres around. The move has since been credited with stopping Russian soldiers and tanks from breaking through Ukraine's lines. "Of course, it was good," said a man who lives in the village, but would not reveal his name. "What would have happened if they (Russian forces) …. were able to cross the little river and then went onto Kyiv?" More than a third of some fields have been flooded, said another man, who also did not reveal his name. "I thought that was it," he told a local radio station. At the time, his Labor Party trailed behind the conservative government in opinion polls, struggling to cut through during the pandemic. But the near-death experience changed his life, Albanese told media. In its wake, the opposition leader, 59, recovered on all fronts: overcoming serious injury, shrugging off rumblings of a party leadership coup and shedding 18 kilos (40 pounds) -- an image revamp that raised some eyebrows. His suits went from baggy to tailored, his bookish wire-framed glasses switched for "Mad Men"-style … [Read more...] about Australia PM contender overcame crash, party coup rumblings
Hotline mailbag: The impact of SB-1401, the NIL donor hierarchy, Schulz’s future, Edwards’ fate, Kelly’s recruiting and more
The Hotline mailbag is published each Friday. Send questions to [email protected] or hit me on Twitter: @WilnerHotline. Due to volume — and in some cases, the need for research — not all questions will be answered the week of submission. Thanks for your understanding. Some questions have been edited for clarity and brevity. If California Senate Bill 1401 is passed into law, what will be the impact on Pac-12 schools? Will it impact all Power Five schools? — @TerryTerry79 Impossible to know, but we can take our best guess … If forced by law to pay athletes for services rendered , Stanford, Cal and possibly UCLA will give serious thought to removing themselves from the major college football scene. Influential voices on each campus are already opposed to the current state of play — or should we say, pay-for-play. Diverting revenue to football and basketball, and away from the Olympic sports, would prompt an existential crisis on each campus … and … [Read more...] about Hotline mailbag: The impact of SB-1401, the NIL donor hierarchy, Schulz’s future, Edwards’ fate, Kelly’s recruiting and more
