Tengku Zafrul: Malaysia’s inflation may reach ‘around 11%’ in subsidies’ absence

August 5, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 5): Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has said Malaysia's inflation may reach "around 11%" if the country does not implement subsidies for essential items like fuel. "We have inflation under control, relative to our neighbours and relative to what we are seeing in the rest of the world. [Malaysia's] inflation is forecast to be 2.2%-3.2%. In fact, for the first six months of the year, inflation was around 2.5%, and that was largely due to the large size of subsidies that we introduced," he said in an interview with CNN on Thursday (Aug 4) evening. Malaysia's inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, increased 3.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in June, led by costlier food, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said on July 22. Nonetheless, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged that the current blanket subsidy policy is not sustainable for the country, but it is necessary for economic recovery in the short term. "We do not want … [Read more...] about Tengku Zafrul: Malaysia’s inflation may reach ‘around 11%’ in subsidies’ absence

August 6, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Bloomberg filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A NEW DELHI (Aug 5): Sri Lankan nationals have been told by their government not to seek employment illegally in Malaysia by using social visit pass. Malaysian authorities are deporting about 20 Sri Lankans per week, after denying them entry for not using proper documents, according to the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry. "It has been brought to the notice of the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force that an increasing number of Sri Lankans are arriving in Malaysia under visit visas, with the belief that these visas could be converted to working visas," the ministry said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 4). Many people who managed to get into Malaysia on a visit visa, later found out that they were duped by "job agents", it said. The ministry said all prospective migrants should use proper channels and register with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), before leaving the country. The debt reality check

August 6, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 6): Spending in excess of revenue every year since 1998, Malaysia has racked up over RM1 trillion in debt in just 25 years. The figure could double by 2030 if revenue growth continues to trail the rate at which overhead expenses are growing spending. And not only is Malaysia among the majority of countries that had little choice but to accumulate more debt to save lives and livelihoods during the Covid-19 pandemic, official data shows that the country has been rolling over its debt. Already at 18% of federal government revenue, interest payments alone will become more expensive as new debt are taken at higher rates to roll over old debt. While Malaysia is in no immediate danger of defaulting on its loan obligations and becoming the next Sri Lanka, the fact that interest rates are rising at their fastest pace in two decades in most of the developed world means that debt will become more expensive to service. This racks up pressure for greater revenue … [Read more...] about The debt reality check

Changing mosquito genes, spreading bacteria: Science sees success vs dengue

August 10, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

ILLUSTRATION Ed Lustan ( First of two parts ) MANILA, Philippines—Amid the rise of dengue cases and deaths in many countries worldwide, including the Philippines, scientists are playing God to combat the disease by tinkering with the genetic makeup of mosquitoes and bringing harmless bacteria into the picture. Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus responsible for causing the disease is called dengue virus (DENV)—which has four serotypes. Not all mosquitoes, however, can transmit the virus to humans. GRAPHIC Ed Lustan According to the Department of Health (DOH), dengue infection is caused by DENV from female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti genus. A bite from these mosquitoes can also spread chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Aedes aegypti can be identified by the white and black stripes on their body. These mosquitoes—which usually live and nest in clear water—typically bite between 6:00 to 8:00 AM … [Read more...] about Changing mosquito genes, spreading bacteria: Science sees success vs dengue
