The rise of remote work has drastically changed the relationship between companies and their employees. advertisement advertisement What began two years ago as a sudden shift to a work-from-home model has changed collaboration, coordination, and communication permanently. As companies work to find the right balance between flexible work and optimum productivity, the “hybrid” work model is being codified in company policies. The stakes are high: The terms of the new hybrid work contract have a direct bearing on companies’ ability to keep employees happy, and to attract new ones. According to a recent Gallup survey , nearly 60% of employees who can work from home would prefer a hybrid work schedule going forward. At the same time, roughly 60% said they want more structure from their employers when it comes to deciding hybrid work schedules. Less clear for employers, though, is how frequently employees might come into the office. Every company … [Read more...] about What the future of hybrid work will (and won’t) look like, according to 27 business leaders

This is how I lead with compassion as a queer, Black woman in tech
Recently, a friend and leader sent me an SOS about her new IT job, “I don’t know how you did this, please send help. How do I succeed here as a woman?” We set up a series of mentorship calls, but my overarching advice for her echoed throughout: “You deserve a seat at the table. Don’t act like you’re new or stay quiet. Take up space–you’re in that room for a reason. Speak with confidence. Don’t undermine yourself.” advertisement advertisement I no longer hide myself at work. But it wasn’t always this way. When I started my career in tech, I was already living inauthentically. I was married to a man, and my colleagues were mostly straight, white men, whose clothing styles I emulated to try to fit in. Yes, that meant I showed up to work most days in khakis and a polo shirt. I wasn’t dressing for my personality, I was dressing to play a role. A manager at the time pulled me aside and told me I needed to dress more professionally, which really meant … [Read more...] about This is how I lead with compassion as a queer, Black woman in tech
This is what companies get wrong when hiring a Chief Diversity Officer
In the beginning of 2020, when the pandemic first hit and businesses started to realize its economic implications, guess which jobs were some of the first on the chopping block? advertisement advertisement If you guessed jobs in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), you’re absolutely right. In the frenzy of response strategies and emergency planning, many businesses determined that these positions were expendable . That was partly due to a business rationale – Diversity positions are not exactly responsible for supply chains or sales – but it was also the product of 50+ years of corporate America diminishing and disregarding the role DEI plays. It was therefore an ugly irony when the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 prompted so many of those corporations to rethink their position. Suddenly, corporate leaders were terrified about how to respond to their employees. Movements like Black Lives Matter took center stage and encouraged us all to question … [Read more...] about This is what companies get wrong when hiring a Chief Diversity Officer
How to deal with stress while working in a demanding industry
Workplace stress is increasingly becoming a larger part of the conversation since the pandemic. And against the backdrop of hustle culture, reports indicate that the number of people seeking help with stress or anxiety has increased by 55% , according to a study by a mental health services provider in the United Kingdom. The British Health and Safety Executive indicates that in 2021 alone, 822,000 workers in the U.K. suffered from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety. advertisement advertisement I entered law—the second most stressed-out professional in Britain, according to insurance company, Protectivity—in 2009 as an ambitious high-achiever. As a career defined by its high standards and perfectionism, it is often home to high-achievers and the ambitious few who are willing to burn the candle at both ends and make the sacrifice required to progress. But the impact stress was having on my life nearly resulted in my leaving the profession … [Read more...] about How to deal with stress while working in a demanding industry

As recently as 2015, there were more artists living in New York City than ever before (about 55,000). But from January 2021 to January 2022, rents surged 33%, pushing artists farther and farther out of the city’s creative neighborhoods. advertisement advertisement Then came Silver Art Project. Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk
Earlier this year, an Arizona woman whom we’ll call Kelly was completing the paperwork required to get facial feminization surgery. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her teens, and after years of struggling with depression, she decided as a 20-something to transition. Then reality hit fast: The process is expensive, lengthy, and rarely covered by insurance. “So I did what lots of trans people do,” she tells Fast Company . “I got a job at Starbucks.” advertisement advertisement Starbucks has covered some types of gender-reassignment surgery since 2012. But in a radical move in 2018, it worked with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to unveil a supplemental insurance plan that added coverage of procedures “previously considered cosmetic,” such as breast reduction, forehead contouring, calf implants, and hair transplants. With the requisite medical signoffs, Starbucks workers could get many of these procedures with zero … [Read more...] about Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk
How washing your clothes with cold water could help save carbon emissions and ocean pollution
advertisement advertisement Over the course of our climate-solutions season of the World Changing Ideas podcast, we’ve considered grand ideas like replacing petrochemicals with plant-based chemicals and converting methane into polymers for producing everyday goods. And while many of us want to help make a difference ourselves, most of us probably don’t have a chemical manufacturing plant at home. But, most of us do laundry. We’re trained to wash fabrics at high temperatures to get out harsh stains. Yet, it’s estimated that 90% of energy that a washing machine expends goes into heating the water and that home laundries in the U.S. produce an estimated 179 million metric tons of CO2 every year. On our last regular episode of this season’s World Changing Ideas , we find out how simple cold washes could save energy while also reducing ocean pollution. Last year, laundry detergent company Tide launched its #TurntoCold movement , in partnership with … [Read more...] about How washing your clothes with cold water could help save carbon emissions and ocean pollution
