- A + A CANBERRA (June 23): A landmark inquiry into Australia's mining sector has uncovered dozens of shocking cases of sexual harassment and abuse of women workers at companies including BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group. The Western Australia government report released on Thursday described "horrific" incidents at the workplaces, which it labelled both a failure of the industry and an oversight by government. Among recommendations were the payment of compensation to the many workers who became victims of bosses and colleagues on remote projects. "I was shocked and appalled well beyond expectation by the size and depth of the problem," Libby Mettam, chair of the inquiry, said in the report. "To hear the lived reality of the taunts, attacks, and targeted violence, the devastation and despair the victims experienced, the threats to or loss of their livelihood that resulted was shattering and completely inexcusable." The probe delves into the dark corners of an industry … [Read more...] about ‘Horrific’ sexual abuses uncovered in Australia mining probe

US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell
- A + A NEW YORK (June 23): Ghislaine Maxwell should be sentenced to between 30 and 55 years in prison after being convicted of helping the sex offender and globetrotting financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls, US prosecutors said on Wednesday. Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December by a federal jury on five charges, including sex trafficking, for recruiting and grooming four girls between 1994 and 2004 for sexual encounters with Epstein, then her boyfriend. In a sentencing memorandum filed in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors called Maxwell's conduct "shockingly predatory." "She was a calculating, sophisticated, and dangerous criminal who preyed on vulnerable young girls and groomed them for sexual abuse," they wrote. "Her practice of targeting vulnerable victims reflects her view that struggling young girls could be treated like disposable objects." Circuit Judge Alison Nathan, who presided over Maxwell's four-week trial before being … [Read more...] about US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell
Elizabeth Holmes sentencing hearing set for September 26
(CNN Business) Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos who was convicted earlier this month on four out of 11 federal fraud and conspiracy charges, will not be sentenced until September 26, according to a new filing. The prosecution and defense had proposed September 12 for a sentencing hearing in a court filing Tuesday, stating in the filing that "following Labor Day 2022 would be appropriate in light of ongoing proceedings in a related matter," a reference to the upcoming trial of Holmes' second-in-command at Theranos who faces the same charges as her. In a court order signed Wednesday, Judge Edward Davila, who is presiding over Holmes' case, set her sentencing hearing for later in September. By that point, it will have been more than a full year since her trial kicked off. Until then, Holmes remains free on a $500,000 bond secured by property, according to the earlier filing from the prosecution and defense. The State Of Autism Employment In 2021
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin (Latest in a series over the past year on the pandemic’s employment impacts, and rebuilding America’s job base. The previous ones are here .) In Wealth and Poverty , first published in 1981, George Gilder notes the growing calls at the time for guaranteed incomes and guaranteed jobs. Gilder draws on the writing of Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset, to explain the emptiness of these calls, and the social and individual importance of finding and holding a job—in some ways for adults with developmental differences most of all. “A guaranteed job denies the crucial fact that all jobs are to some extent created by the worker. It it is only he who can guarantee the job, by the act of supplying labor, undergoing hardship, achieving distinction, and thus become part of the struggle which human life improves itself.” Entering 2021, most of the members of our adult autism group of the Bay Area, AASCEND, continue … [Read more...] about The State Of Autism Employment In 2021
How to design homes for life well beyond 100
The world is getting older. By 2050, the global population of people in their 80s will be three times what it is today. According to the Stanford Center on Longevity, half of all the 5-year-olds currently living in the U.S. can expect to make it into their 100s . Harvard Medical School aging researcher David Sinclair suggests that the first person to live to age 150 has already been born . advertisement advertisement It’s too early to predict all the ways that longer lives will change society, but at least one industry is starting to make some guesses. The developers, designers, and operators of senior housing are thinking about and planning for how these demographic shifts will affect their businesses and the services they provide. To get ahead of the curve, some are designing their facilities for people who will technically be seniors for more than 40 years. They’re learning from communities around the world where people tend to live the … [Read more...] about How to design homes for life well beyond 100
Supreme Court sides with high school cheerleader who cursed online
Washington (CNN) The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a former high school cheerleader who argued that she could not be punished by her public school for posting a profanity-laced caption on Snapchat when she was off school grounds. The case involving a Pennsylvania teenager was closely watched to see how the court would handle the free speech rights of some 50 million public school children and the concerns of schools over off-campus and online speech that could amount to a disruption of the school's mission or rise to the level of bullying or threats. The 8-1 majority opinion was penned by Justice Stephen Breyer. "It might be tempting to dismiss (the student's) words as unworthy of the robust First Amendment protections discussed herein. But sometimes it is necessary to protect the superfluous in order to preserve the necessary," Breyer wrote. Breyer said that the court has made clear that students "do not shed their constitutional rights to … [Read more...] about Supreme Court sides with high school cheerleader who cursed online

The arrests followed a police raid on the area. The couple were brought to the local police station. While her boyfriend was beaten and tortured in a separate cell, Adinda was blindfolded, drugged and gang-raped by police officers over four days. The police demanded Rp95 million (US$6,500) to end her ordeal and drop all charges – an unfathomable amount for someone earning below the poverty line in Indonesia. My latest research shows that experiences similar to Adinda’s rape, physical abuse and extortion at the hands of police officers are rampant in Indonesia. … [Read more...] about Research shows how Indonesia’s drug control victimizes women and puts their health at risk

How to handle a coworker who’s acting out from a place of fear
Fears are the root cause of many unhelpful behaviors at the office—and yes, at home too. Take for example, the boss who rewrites your powerpoint deck. The colleague who always seems to “forget” to CC you or invite you to important meetings. The direct report who has either gone non-communicative or just complains to HR about feeling overworked and disempowered in his role rather than talking to you about it. The board member who writes scathing emails, but is always your best friend on the phone. advertisement advertisement Learning to have the right conversations, conversations that allow us to see beyond disruptive or harmful behaviors and get to the underlying fears that motivate them, is a crucial skill that we all need to develop. The problem is, it’s really hard—especially when someone is stonewalling or throwing barbs at you. People who are acting out of fear rarely do so gracefully. Instead, they often exhibit fight, flight, or fear behaviors … [Read more...] about How to handle a coworker who’s acting out from a place of fear
