Google Equiano: Internet giant bets big on Africa with latest megaproject
(CNN) On July 1, a cable emerged from the Atlantic Ocean in Swakopmund, a small coastal city in western Namibia. Mostly known as a seaside resort, Swakopmund is used to visitors. But the giant ship out at sea, the string of buoys, and a fleet of smaller vessels manned by workers in hard hats and fluorescent bibs was an arrival of a different kind. Running for thousands of miles along the bottom of the sea, the cable's landing had been delayed for months by rough conditions and Covid-19 . But now here it was, a couple of inches wide and already covered in sand. A welcome party stood on the beach and posed for photos before the cable continued inland. Equiano had finally arrived. Equiano is the latest subsea internet cable financed by Google. Starting in Portugal and eventually ending in South Africa, with branches to Nigeria , Togo, the islands of St Helena, and Namibia, the 15,000-kilometer (9,320-mile) cable is designed to deliver high-speed broadband along the west coast of … [Read more...] about Google Equiano: Internet giant bets big on Africa with latest megaproject

‘Hamilton’ Says It Didn’t Give Texas Church Permission To Perform Musical—And Change It To Be About Jesus
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A production of the musical Hamilton mounted by a church in Texas—which changed the show to add religious themes—was unauthorized and performed illegally, a spokesperson for Hamilton said on Monday after the show garnered widespread attention, though producers did allow the church to hold a second performance of the show even after issuing a cease and desist. Key Facts A spokesperson for Hamilton on Broadway said the production “did not grant” a license to perform the musical to the Door McAllen Church and RGV Productions, which mounted performances on Friday and Saturday. According to social media accounts of the church’s production—which was livestreamed on YouTube on Friday—it changed some of the show’s original lyrics and added in religious themes and messaging, such as adding a scene in which Alexander Hamilton accepts Jesus Christ. It also ended with a post-show sermon that … [Read more...] about ‘Hamilton’ Says It Didn’t Give Texas Church Permission To Perform Musical—And Change It To Be About Jesus
Box Office: Why ‘Prey’ Likely Would Have Struggled In Theaters
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If we’re judging by social media feeds, Prey was last weekend’s most popular movie. The picture, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and penned by Patrick Aison, stars Amber Midthunder as a young Comanche who must defend her village when a Predator shows up for a few days to kill. It is pretty damn good, and much of the buzz has over displeasure that it debuted as a Hulu original. While it arguably deserved a theatrical release, it likely wouldn’t have been a box office hit. Since Prey was a holdover before Disney bought Fox in 2019, the potential for post-theatrical streaming boosts was contractually limited. Had it been released in theaters, its post-theatrical afterlife would have begun not on Disney+ or Hulu but on HBO Max. However, if Disney wanted the film in theaters badly enough, they likely could have worked out a post-theatrical deal akin to Death on the Nile which premiered at home after theatrical on both Hulu … [Read more...] about Box Office: Why ‘Prey’ Likely Would Have Struggled In Theaters
The Cloud PC Is The New Road To Virtual Desktops
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Mentor & board director for market-leading technology companies, including Workspot— the Cloud PC Company When we look back at traditional, on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), we can understand why IT organizations adopted it. VDI centralized the delivery and management of Windows desktops and apps from data center servers, providing anywhere access over a LAN or internet connection. It improved security while supporting a workforce that worked largely within reasonable proximity of an enterprise-operated data center. However, VDI was time-consuming, capital-intensive, complex and hard to scale. With the introduction of Cloud PCs—an enterprise desktop experience delivered from the cloud—it's now possible to modernize legacy VDI. VDI Has Run Its Course Over the last few years, increased security threats, the mainstreaming of hybrid work and a more globally distributed workforce have driven a … [Read more...] about The Cloud PC Is The New Road To Virtual Desktops

Jack Ma Is Criticized For Endorsing 12-Hour Days, Six Days A Week — But He’s Right About One Thing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File) Jack Ma, the billionaire founder of Alibaba, has come under fire for his views on the controversial practice known as "996." This number refers to Ma’s belief that everyone in his company should happily work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. From his earliest days in the late '90s, Ma preached to a small scrappy group of employees that they must emulate the “hard-working spirit of Silicon Valley” to compete against them. “If we go to work at 8 a.m. and go home at 5 p.m., this is not a high-tech company.” His message is the same today: "I personally think that 996 is a huge blessing," he said. "How do you achieve the success you want without paying extra effort and time?" Ma added that the real 996 is not overtime work. He declared that everyone does have the right to choose. However, that option may be frowned upon in the eyes of management. He chastises those who … [Read more...] about Jack Ma Is Criticized For Endorsing 12-Hour Days, Six Days A Week — But He’s Right About One Thing
