Global economy has turned the corner, but the negatives haven’t fully gone away

February 3, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

The burst of growth could bring with it faster inflation, as was the case in the US, Europe and other parts of Asia. Turning points are always difficult to embrace — if this indeed is one. So let’s accept this half-full glass. After a dour few months marked by a proliferation of recession calls, global economic prospects are improving. From China’s unexpectedly quick reopening to optimism that interest rates are close to peaking, there’s been a run of good news. Forecasters at the International Monetary Fund, who spent the past year downgrading their numbers, raised their outlook for world growth a smidge. The lender even went so far as to float the notion of a crossroads, something that economists are usually reluctant to be definitive about. While laying out slightly better projections for 2023, Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas strained not to be too enthusiastic. “The outlook has not worsened this time around, which itself is good news,” he said in Singapore … [Read more...] about Global economy has turned the corner, but the negatives haven’t fully gone away

The Top 10 Best Movies About First Contact With Aliens

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin NASA announced the Habitable Worlds Observatory as a new component to the search for alien life, as well as a new team to study UFOs (or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena , aka UAPs, the new preferred term). And recently, scientists and some organizations started preparing for how to respond if humanity is contacted by extraterrestrials. Indeed, many experts increasingly believe it’s just a matter of time before it happens, meaning it’s time to count down the top 10 best movies about first contact with aliens. Increased efforts to locate intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations, and to prepare our own human civilization for discovery and/or contact with aliens, come at a time when the military and government have famously — and controversially — gone public to confirm UAPs are a real unexplained phenomena with potential origins that may theoretically include extraterrestrial design. Video and photographs from confirmed … [Read more...] about The Top 10 Best Movies About First Contact With Aliens

When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin My grandmother Estelle Craig was a remarkable woman. She was a journalist in the 1940s; a letter to her from J. Edgar Hoover hangs on my office wall. In the 1950s she founded a travel business – World Adventure Tours – that marketed tours via celebrity talks on exotic locales; a signed photo of Sir Edmund Hillary hangs right above J. Edgar. When the Duke of Bedford came to town – presumably to sell tours of Bedford and environs – she got media attention by starting a rumor that he was planning to buy Toronto’s only castle . She loved travel, hobnobbing, and making trouble, in that order. She was also generous. Before she passed away at the age of 103, my kids would send her thank you cards for birthday gifts. Even at that remarkable age she was as sharp as a tack, but had trouble seeing and hearing. My son Leo liked to type his on an electric typewriter, leading to this exchange: Leo: Dad, should I type her thank you … [Read more...] about When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort

Make Panettone Bread Pudding For Your Valentine

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to bake heart-shaped desserts and indulge your sweet tooth. And, I can’t think of a better thing to make than a decadent bread pudding studded with strawberries and chocolate. Bread pudding is one of those desserts that eats like a warm hug. It is so easy to make that even self-proclaimed non-bakers can make it. My version uses a blender to make the custard and that means if you can make a smoothie, you can make this bread pudding! This recipe is very adaptable. I use different kinds of bread based on what flavors I am looking to bake into my bread pudding and I sometimes add sautéed or dried fruit to the mix. I often use raisin bread, but this year I discovered something even better! A candied wild strawberry and dark chocolate panettone from Olivieri 1882 and it’s the ultimate bread for bread pudding. The strawberry-chocolate San Valentino Panettone is a limited-edition heart-shaped … [Read more...] about Make Panettone Bread Pudding For Your Valentine

New Dashboard Shows Key Health Measures In Each Of 435 Congressional Districts

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Wondering whether your Congressperson is actually doing a good job? Is there some type of metric besides number of times the Congressperson tweeted expressions of outrage and used ALL CAPS? Well, it could help to see what’s really happening with the health of people in your Congressional District. After all, improving the lives of people in the district is kind of what a House of Representatives person is supposed to do, right? Say, for example, more people in your District are binge drinking than any other District. You may, in turn, be inclined to tell your Congressperson, “Maybe it’s time to bottle up the rhetoric and figure out what’s going on here” That’s why the new Congressional District Health Dashboard (CDHD) , just launched by a team from the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, can be a useful tool to help separate out the Congresspersons … [Read more...] about New Dashboard Shows Key Health Measures In Each Of 435 Congressional Districts

Corporate Mental Health Programs: The Future Of Work And Well-Being

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin CEO at Embed . Passionate for business, tech development & women empowerment. Mental health is now prevalently on the radar for most organizations—and this was not the case some years ago. The American Psychological Association’s 2022 survey found that 71% of workers believe that employers are now more concerned about their mental health than in the past. I often wonder if this is one of the silver linings of Covid, in addition to having the opportunity to work from home, which also raised new issues relating to mental health and the balance between work and home. According to a brief by the World Health Organization, anxiety and depression’s global prevalence increased by 25% in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. The lines were always blurred for us in senior roles in organizations, where gaining that ideal balance between work and home life is a race most are not winning. Tech giants call time on stocks rally, U.S. payrolls loom

February 3, 2023 by business.inquirer.net

LONDON/SYDNEY  – A global stock rally, powered by hopes of central banks ending aggressive rate rises, ran into roadblocks on Friday following weak earnings from U.S. tech giants and as key U.S. jobs data loomed. The MSCI World Stock Index slipped 0.2 percent, but was still near its highest since last August following a sharp rebound in recent weeks on hopes that central bank rate hikes are nearing an end. Wall Street stock futures fell sharply, with contracts on the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 2 percent lower, on disappointing earnings from Google, Apple and Amazon. S&P 500 futures slid 0.9 percent. Investors are also watching the fallout from this week’s plunge in shares of India’s Adani group, which continued to nosedive on Friday with market losses amounting to $115 billion in the wake of a U.S. short-seller’s report. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 share benchmark fell 0.6 percent. Germany’s benchmark 10-year bond yield inched 2 basis points (bps) higher to 2.097 percent, having on … [Read more...] about Tech giants call time on stocks rally, U.S. payrolls loom
