Two young Thai activists in serious condition after staging hunger strike over lèse-majesté law

February 2, 2023 by thethaiger.com

Two Thai activists are reportedly in serious condition after staging a hunger strike over Thailand’s lèse-majesté law. The young women activists, 21 year old Tantawan Tuatulanon “Tawan,” and 23 year old Orawan Phupong “Bam,” were accused of insulting the monarchy after holding up a poster in a mall that allegedly defamed the monarchy. The poster’s writing asked whether people thought the royal motorcade created trouble for the country’s residents since it created road blockages and traffic jams. According to The Guardian , Tawan and Bam are on strike to demand the lese majeste law be repealed, along with other changes that include the courts allowing activists to be released on bail. Both of them started refusing water and food on Saturday, January 18, 2023 and were both hospitalised two days later. The Gregorys Have Dedicated Themselves To Uplifting The Black Community

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin President Obama has recognized John and Pamela Gregory for making positive changes in the Black community. The married couple are cofounders of several organizations: The National Center for Urban Solutions , The National African American Male Wellness Agency , Academy for Urban Scholars , and NCUS TEC . They began working together 30 years ago, with zero funding and no real guidelines as to how to accomplish their goals. And yet to date, the Gregorys have raised millions in funding, helped over 50,000 families, and provided employment opportunities for more than 10,000 people of color. African-American men are more likely to die of chronic diseases than their white counterparts. The Gregorys established the National African American Male Wellness Agency in 2004 in order to empower men of color to understand that through prevention, they can live longer. The awareness campaign is the largest wellness initiative of … [Read more...] about The Gregorys Have Dedicated Themselves To Uplifting The Black Community

Bank of England hikes rates by half-point to tame inflation

February 2, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Bank of England, London (File image: Reuters) The Bank of England raised interest rates by half a percentage point Thursday as it sought to tame double-digit inflation that is fueling a cost-of-living crisis, public-sector strikes and fears of recession. The bank’s monetary policy committee voted 7-2 to push its key rate to 4%, approving the 10th consecutive rate increase since a post-pandemic surge in the world economy and Russia’s war in Ukraine drove inflation to 40-year highs. Economists suggest this may be the last big rate increase for Britain’s central bank as inflation begins to slow. “The extent to which domestic inflationary pressures ease will depend on the evolution of the economy, including the impact of the significant increases in Bank Rate so far,” the bank said in a statement. “There are considerable uncertainties around the outlook.” The U.S. Federal Reserve has already started tapering its response, boosting its key rate by just a … [Read more...] about Bank of England hikes rates by half-point to tame inflation

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In Maui, life revolves around the beach. The $5.5-million plantation-style residence in Wailuku on Hawaii’s second-largest island takes full advantage of its oceanfront setting. The 4.5-acre property at 490 and 497 Lilihua Place was custom-built in 2020 to maximize access and views. The beach lies right outside the backyard, a perfect location for surfing, kitesurfing, standup paddling and just kicking back and watching sunsets. “There’s big wave activity out there that’s just amazing,” says listing agent Brad MacArthur of Hawaii Life. Love horses? There’s plenty of room for equestrian activities too. Views abound inside the elevated main house. “As soon as you walk in the front door, all the glass around the hall showcases the ocean view,” MacArthur says. There’s not a bad view from any window in the five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home. The property also has a one-bedroom cottage with a private entrance. Honda’s Dogged Hydrogen Push Yields A Remarkable New Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan

(Honda) Honda The dogged persistence Honda has shown in its decades-long quest to perfect hydrogen as a zero-emission replacement for gasoline can be seen as quixotic or futile. But the quirky company that makes motorcycles, lawnmowers, jets, humanoid robots, boat engines and a few million cars soldiers on, along with GM, Toyota and Hyundai, in the face of haphazard government support for hydrogen, minimal consumer awareness and withering critics like Elon Musk , a tireless advocate for Tesla’s battery-powered cars. All the sweat equity Honda engineers have invested in its fuel cell program, year after year, has yielded a remarkable new version of the Clarity sedan, the most compelling argument yet for the potential hydrogen cars still hold. Civic Nation: Delivering Impact In 2022

February 2, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This past year, our country faced remarkable challenges - continued attacks on our democracy, the unraveling of women’s reproductive rights, and the lingering effects of the pandemic that left millions facing economic uncertainty. These challenges had to be met with action - to empower individuals to organize in their own communities, push back against old systems, and shift the cultural conversation. And that’s exactly what Civic Nation did. I’m excited to share our 2022 Impact Report , a snapshot of the work our initiatives accomplished this past year, and a preview of the exciting projects we have coming in 2023. Through a series of case studies, the report dives deep into how we protected democracy, responded to the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Mr. Powell, Drop The Sledgehammer And Start Innovating

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The US Federal Reserve System is living in the past and undoing the future. Chairman Jerome Powell and his colleagues have wielded interest rates like a sledgehammer, hoping to crush inflation the way Paul Volcker did in the 1980s. At this point, however, each additional swing of the sledgehammer hurts our chances of a “soft landing” in 2023 and a habitable planet in 2100. The sledgehammer cannot distinguish between companies that are building a clean, sustainable economy and those that keep us hyper-distracted by devices, hyper-addicted to fossil fuels and hyper-apathetic to inequality. It cannot distinguish between the haves who can weather a recession and the have-nots who will suffer most. Moreover, the Fed’s 2% inflation target is arbitrary. It was invented offhand in 1989 by Don Bash, Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, in response to a law mandating that the country’s central bank have a target. It’s … [Read more...] about Mr. Powell, Drop The Sledgehammer And Start Innovating

Opinion: Border security won’t quell the crush of humanity seeking safety in the U.S.

February 4, 2023 by www.denverpost.com

The humanitarian crisis on the Southwestern border has reached a critical stage. El Paso, Texas, is struggling to handle the influx of migrants. It converted a convention center and two middle schools into migrant housing facilities because the city shelters were overwhelmed, but hundreds of migrants still sleep on the city streets. And the challenge is not confined to the border towns. Hundreds of miles away, New York City, Chicago, and Denver, among others, find their resources strained to address the needs of the migrants. The crisis cries for a solution, but none is in sight. Critics call for securing the border, and deterring the illegal crossers, including giving border patrol authority to immediately expel them, strictly enforcing the immigration laws, and reinstituting former President Donald Trump’s harsh policies such as “Stay-in-Mexico” and separation of children from parents and families. Deterrence has not worked, and the surge of migrants continues unabated. … [Read more...] about Opinion: Border security won’t quell the crush of humanity seeking safety in the U.S.

When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin My grandmother Estelle Craig was a remarkable woman. She was a journalist in the 1940s; a letter to her from J. Edgar Hoover hangs on my office wall. In the 1950s she founded a travel business – World Adventure Tours – that marketed tours via celebrity talks on exotic locales; a signed photo of Sir Edmund Hillary hangs right above J. Edgar. When the Duke of Bedford came to town – presumably to sell tours of Bedford and environs – she got media attention by starting a rumor that he was planning to buy Toronto’s only castle . She loved travel, hobnobbing, and making trouble, in that order. She was also generous. Before she passed away at the age of 103, my kids would send her thank you cards for birthday gifts. Even at that remarkable age she was as sharp as a tack, but had trouble seeing and hearing. My son Leo liked to type his on an electric typewriter, leading to this exchange: Leo: Dad, should I type her thank you … [Read more...] about When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort
