Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If you failed to report a foreign bank account but were not willful, which is a reasonable IRS penalty, $50,000 or $2.72M? The Supreme Court has announced that it will decide, considering the non-willful FBAR violations in Bittner v. United States , No. 21-1195. The Court is expected to clarify whether non-willful foreign bank account reporting violations apply per form or per account . In 2021, the Fifth Circuit held in United States v. Bittner that a Romanian-born businessman and investor with foreign bank accounts was liable for the penalties based on each of the dozens of accounts he failed to report each year rather than on the single FBAR form he failed to file each year ($2.72 million in FBAR penalties for his five years of violations instead of $50,000). The Bittner decision is in direct conflict with a Ninth Circuit ruling which held that non-willful FBAR penalties apply per form. Roe V. Wade Overturned: The Ultimate Explainer On What It Means
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Supreme Court on Friday overturned the nationwide right to abortion in its landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling, causing major uncertainty about the future of abortion access in the United States. Here are answers to some of the biggest questions: What did the Supreme Court’s ruling say? In a decision by Justice Samuel Alito, the court upheld a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A majority of justices also voted to strike down Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), effectively ruling abortion is no longer a nationwide right and giving states the power to ban the procedure. Alito called Roe v. Wade “an abuse of judicial authority” that relied on “egregiously wrong” reasoning, and argued the right to abortion is not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and isn’t “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition.” Four other conservative … [Read more...] about Roe V. How Overturning Roe V. Wade Affects Taxpayer-Funded Abortions
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.S. Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion after almost 50 years. Experts predict it will lead to all but total bans on the procedure in about half of the states. When it comes to how much public money is spent on abortions via Medicaid, the impact is much lower. That’s because in conservative states that are set to ban abortions, the procedure is already very difficult to obtain for lower income women. “The consequences of this decision will be felt in cities nationwide, where women will suffer from the loss of access to critical healthcare services, where they face state abortion bans that do not include exemptions for rape or incest,” said Tom Cochran, executive director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is urging Congress to legalize abortion nationwide. Medicaid-funded abortions are already uncommon Most states have followed … [Read more...] about How Overturning Roe V. Wade Affects Taxpayer-Funded Abortions
Overturning Roe V. Wade: Here’s How Abortion Bans Will Hurt State Economies And The GDP
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade Friday, a monumental ruling for reproductive rights that’s also expected to broadly impact the economy, as a study from the International Women’s Policy Center found state economies already lose billions due to abortion restrictions—an issue that’s likely to now grow “exponentially.” Key Facts Numerous studies have found abortion restrictions and being denied an abortion have negative economic impacts —including by reducing participation in the labor force, decreasing earnings and increasing rates of poverty and debt—and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in May overturning Roe “would set women back decades” economically. Those effects are felt at the broader societal level: Abortion restrictions cost state economies an estimated $105 billion per year and getting rid of all state-level restrictions would increase the national GDP by nearly 0.5%, the … [Read more...] about Overturning Roe V. Biden Pentagon Pledges To Protect Abortion Access For Troops
The Pentagon pledged to protect “seamless access” to abortion in a statement Friday, citing the potential impact of a landmark Supreme Court ruling on troop readiness. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern about military “readiness and resilience” following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision that put states in control of regulating abortion in a statement . Currently, the Department of Defense (DOD) does not have procedures for allowing female service members to have abortions if they are stationed in one of the states that bans or tightly restricts the practice, Politico reported. (RELATED: REPORT: Disney Sends Memo To Employees Promising To Cover Travel Costs For Abortion) “Nothing is more important to me or to this Department than the health and well-being of our Service members, the civilian workforce and DOD families,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, addressing concerns about abortion access in a statement Friday. … [Read more...] about Biden Pentagon Pledges To Protect Abortion Access For Troops
Sony Studios Defy Jim Ryan’s Neutrality Request After Roe V Wade Overturned
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We are seeing a wide range of reactions from game studios across the industry in the wake of the overturning of Roe V. Wade by the Supreme Court yesterday. They range from Destiny developer Bungie, who immediately published a policy that they would pay for employees in affected states to travel to ensure their reproductive rights remained intact, to EA, who crafted a vague statement about “the well-being of our people” that seems crafted to be as inoffensive as possible. But Sony is a special case. Previously, when the leaked Roe draft went out earlier this year, Jim Ryan sent an email to Sony employees saying that “we owe it to each other and to PlayStation’s millions of users to respect differences of opinion among everyone in our internal and external communities. Respect does not equal agreement. But it is fundamental to who we are as a company and as a valued global brand.” He then went on to discuss how he … [Read more...] about Sony Studios Defy Jim Ryan’s Neutrality Request After Roe V Wade Overturned

DISH lit up a new 5G cellular network in more than 120 cities on June 14, including Grand Junction and Pueblo, meeting an early target federal regulators had set for the construction of the nation’s fourth wireless network. Whether Project Genesis, as the network is called, succeeds or fails will determine the fate of one of Colorado’s largest public companies, and could weigh heavily on Denver’s future as a center of telecommunications innovation, a legacy that goes back decades to the early days of cable television. “Through DISH’s efforts, Denver is becoming a wireless hub,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer of DISH Wireless. “Our partners are coming here, too, and investing in people and resources in this market. We expect Denver to become a leader in 5G.” DISH Wireless has hired more than 1,600 workers in the past 18 months and is looking to add 500 more, Swieringa said. DISH, the parent company, already employs 6,000 people along the Front … [Read more...] about Post Premium: Top stories for the week of June 20-26
Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why
For Colorado Democrats, the reversal of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court underscores why politicians like Greg Lopez, the top-line candidate in the Republican race to unseat Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, are so dangerous. Lopez not only believes abortion should be banned in all cases, but also told The Denver Post earlier this month that anyone who becomes pregnant because they were raped should see the pregnancy as a good opportunity. “I’m a firm believer that a child brings happiness into the lives of people,” he said. “It may not have been something that you planned on, it was something you didn’t agree to, but for me a child brings happiness.” Democratic leaders and groups in Colorado roundly and regularly denounce Lopez and other politicians for these kinds of remarks. But at the same time, Democratic campaign groups are spending millions to advance those politicians’ careers — temporarily. These groups have run ads and mailers and sent out texts and emails … [Read more...] about Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why
