“Luddite” teens don’t want your likes
NEW YORK — On a brisk recent Sunday, a band of teenagers met on the steps of Central Library in Brooklyn to start the weekly meeting of the Luddite Club, a high school group that promotes a lifestyle of self-liberation from social media and technology. As the dozen teens headed into Prospect Park, they hid away their iPhones — or, in the case of the most devout members, their flip phones, which some had decorated with stickers and nail polish. They marched up a hill toward their usual spot, a dirt mound far from the park’s crowds. Among them was Odille Zexter-Kaiser, a senior at Edward R. Murrow High School, who trudged through leaves in Doc Martens and mismatched wool socks. “It’s a little frowned on if someone doesn’t show up,” Odille said. “We’re here every Sunday, rain or shine, even snow. We don’t keep in touch with each other, so you have to show up.” After the club members gathered logs to form a circle, they sat and withdrew into a bubble of serenity. Some drew in … [Read more...] about “Luddite” teens don’t want your likes
The Inside Story Of A Trump Pardon Gone Wrong
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On January 20, the day President Joe Biden was inaugurated, Luke Scarmazzo, who is serving a 22-year sentence in federal prison for operating a medical cannabis dispensary in California, realized that he was going to remain in prison. During the final days of the Trump Administration, he was told that he would be pardoned and released. “When I saw Biden getting sworn in, I knew that it wasn’t gonna happen,” Scarmazzo says during a phone call from Yazoo City, MS-based FCI Yazoo City, where he is currently incarcerated. For some reason, Scarmazzo’s case wasn’t approved at the last minute. After eight years of lobbying the Obama and Trump Administrations, Scarmazzo now has to start all over with the Biden Administration. Scarmazzo and his business partner, Ricardo Montes, opened California Healthcare Collective medical cannabis dispensary in 2004 in Modesto, CA. Though their business was legal under California’s … [Read more...] about The Inside Story Of A Trump Pardon Gone Wrong
World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Dr Sewanti Limaye, Director, Precision Oncology, HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre. Cancer is among the most researched diseases in the world. For most cancers, early detection is rare, and there isn’t enough consensus among oncologists, researchers and practitioners of non-Western medicine on its exact causes. Overall, a few broad causes have been conclusively established: Cancer may arise as a consequence of genomic abnormalities such as mutations, or when the body’s immune system weakens or collapses, or due to external assaults to the body such as tobacco use, exposure to chemicals and radiation and certain infections. But much like the human body, much of this disease is a mystery. There is no one cause and there is no one cure. As Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee has written in his cancer magnum opus The Emperor of All Maladies , “That this seemingly simple mechanism—cell growth without barriers—can lie at the heart of this … [Read more...] about World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
San Francisco Tries To Slow Down Waymo And Cruise Robotaxi Expansion. Should They Go Elsewhere?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In the world of self-driving, the strong leaders are now Google/Alphabet’s Waymo, and GM’s Cruise. Both are headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, and both have thus been keen to deploy in the city of San Francisco itself. No wonder, it’s their hometown. Driving it is a challenge but an important one to handle. On the other hand, it doesn’t snow, though it faces fog. It’s a city that already has many people who don’t own cars, and it was the birthplace of ride-hail, first with the now-defunct Sidecar, then Lyft and Uber. It makes a lot of sense that they both want to be there. Even so, the city of San Francisco and it’s agencies have not been too happy with the pilot deployments of these companies and recently wrote letters hoping to slow them down. This article examines the conflict between the companies and their city, considering not just the particular points of contention, but also what sort of relationship makes … [Read more...] about San Francisco Tries To Slow Down Waymo And Cruise Robotaxi Expansion. Be Smart: Look For These Financial Exploitation Warning Signs From The DOJ
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You may think that your aging loved ones are safe from being ripped off because they’ve been careful about their estate planning, particularly if they have a lot to steal. But there is more to keeping them safe financially than a will and trust. The elders tell you “we’ve taken care of all that. Don’t worry”. They are intelligent, good with managing money historically. But things can change with aging. Should you worry? Maybe you should. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) conducts its research, does prosecutions and tries to alert the public of signs of elder financial abuse. If you have an aging parent, meaning anyone over 65, that person is considered an “elder” under the law is statistically more at risk for theft. Invisible scammers aren’t the only ones trying to get into your aging parents’ assets and steal. It can be anyone with access to their bank accounts, checkbook or financial information. Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Twenty-seven-year-old Edgar Garay was killed after he fell from a cliff in Puerto Rico last Sunday while attempting to film a social media video for TikTok. He is sadly among the latest person to be killed while trying to stage a perfect photo or video. A 2018 study conducted by Indian researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that 259 people had died between 2011 and 2017 while trying to take "extreme selfies" with their phones. These have included falls from the tops of mountains, cliff sides, and even tall buildings; while others have been swept away by water currents, and more than a few were killed by wild animals. In one case, a pair of Russian soldiers had posed with a live grenade that suddenly went off, while a teenage Romanian girl tried to take an "ultimate selfie" from the top of a moving train only to come in contact with a live wire. It is also a global phenomenon – with … [Read more...] about Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?
The Best High Chairs Tested To Ensure Proper Seating For Babies And Tots
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The best high chairs boast bells and whistles that our grandparents never dreamed of, and yet, the best ones continue to deliver in a few key areas: durability, cleanability and the best positioning for children. After testing 10 high chairs over several weeks and researching many other bestsellers, I found the Graco Blossom 6-in-1 to be the best high chair overall considering how easy it was to clean, adjust, buckle and use. Not only does it support the baby in a proper eating position, but the tray is removable with an easy one-handed motion. Another favorite was the Peg Perego Siesta as the best splurge high chair. If you’re willing to spend another hundred dollars (or $200, depending on sales and colors), you’ll gain a few more features in the Peg Perego, including the ability to fold it for storage and a slightly elevated look. (Read my in-depth reviews of the Graco Blossom and the Peg Perego Siesta .) Then there … [Read more...] about The Best High Chairs Tested To Ensure Proper Seating For Babies And Tots
Govt spend will boost infra but concerns around public private partnership not addressed: Vinayak Chatterjee.
The central government has emphasised capital expenditure in the economy but it still has not addressed the issues surrounding public-private partnerships in the country, which needs to be urgently looked into, said Vinayak Chatterjee, founder and managing trustee, The Infravision Foundation. " I am not particularly optimistic (about the sucess of the PPP model in India) because I have not seen any, shall I say, strenuous or concerted attempt to address the ills of PPP, to address the issues that made PPP fall," Chatterjee said. He added that while the Centre’s move to increase capital expenditure on infrastructure in 2023-24 is an encouraging move to drive India’s economy and will push the country’s gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) to be around 7.5-8 percent of GDP in the next financial year, “Just a year after recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, if India's GFCF touches 7.5-8 percent in FY24, this is an encouraging sign for the country’s economy,” Chatterjee said. … [Read more...] about Govt spend will boost infra but concerns around public private partnership not addressed: Vinayak Chatterjee.
