Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Great Resignation shows no signs of slowing down. Employers hoping to return to business as usual are in for a rude awakening. There has been a fundamental sea change in what employees expect from the workplace experience, and organizations that do not adapt to meet those new expectations will lose out in a tight labor market. A revealing new survey by Indeed, the world’s number one job site, and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation shows this is especially true with gen Z and young millennial workers—who want to work for employers that value kindness and mental health. Since April 2021, at least four million Americans have been leaving their jobs each month. This ten-month period is the largest exodus of employees on record. Perhaps, as a McKinsey report argues, we should reconsider the term The Great Resignation, which implies a short-lived phenomenon. Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Often misunderstood, Redesign Health’s model is a very different way to create, fund and launch healthcare startups, but will it pay off over the long term? Typically, a story starts with what a company is. In the case of Redesign Health , perhaps it’s best to start with what it isn’t. Redesign Health is not a venture capital (VC) firm, despite the fact that it's often listed among other VCs in funding press releases . It’s not a startup studio or accelerator, even though it’s named as a partner in building many early-stage healthcare companies. Instead, Redesign Health styles itself as “a company that powers innovation in healthcare by developing technologies, tools, and insights that lower the barriers to change across the industry.” What does that mean? After conversations with Redesign Health CEO Brett Shaheen, in addition to other entrepreneurs in the Redesign Health family, the answer is seemingly … [Read more...] about Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle

U.S. Health System Waste Hits $935 Billion A Year
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Waste in the U.S. healthcare system is $760 billion to $935 billion annually, or 25% of total medical spending, according to a new analysis published in JAMA . It’s long been known that there is waste in the U.S. healthcare system and that has triggered a move away from fee-for-service medicine where insurers and the government have historically paid for volume of healthcare delivered. Instead, health plans are increasingly paying via value-based models that reward doctors and hospitals for achieving quality measures and outcomes. But much work is to be done, according to the JAMA “special communication” and a package of articles and editorials outlining waste in the U.S. health system and potential solutions. “The estimated total costs of waste and potential savings from interventions that address waste are as high as $760 billion to $935 billion and $191 billion to $282 billion, respectively,” Dr. William … [Read more...] about U.S. Health System Waste Hits $935 Billion A Year
Platforms And Pandemics: Embracing Digital Health Platform Disruption In The Covid-19 Era
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Of the key lessons that Covid-19 has served up on a silver platter, one of the clearest takeaways is that the U.S. healthcare system is not set up to handle a public health pandemic like the novel coronavirus. From the crippling fragmentation of the delivery system and challenges with care access, to the lack of information transparency and connectivity, the industry’s capabilities and infrastructure have been pushed to the limits as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on. At the same time, the current environment continues to shine a light on just how well positioned digital platforms - which bring together users of different types (think of Lyft bringing together riders and drivers) - are to address the many deficiencies the pandemic has contributed to and revealed. Platforms improving decision-making and information asymmetry in healthcare In a world where primary care providers (PCPs) are in short supply — and both … [Read more...] about Platforms And Pandemics: Embracing Digital Health Platform Disruption In The Covid-19 Era

A women’s health micro-neighborhood springs up on Fifth Avenue
On an unassuming corner near Union Square in downtown Manhattan , a slow creep of new businesses have cropped up over the last few months, occupying storefronts that previously housed retailers more typical of lower Fifth Avenue—a now-vacated Eddie Bauer outpost, Bobby Flay’s legendary restaurant Mesa Grill, which shuttered in 2013, and British lingerie store Rigby & Peller. The newcomers— Modern Age , Kindbody , and VSpot , which inked its lease just last week—have clustered, one next to another, near 15th Street. And they share something in common: all these businesses are women-founded and provide women’s health and wellness services. advertisement advertisement That they’re all light-flooded, bright windowed spaces, street-level, with frontage and marquee branding right in the midst of one of New York’s most trafficked shopping districts is perhaps a sign there’s been a seismic shift in the public discourse around women’s healthcare. … [Read more...] about A women’s health micro-neighborhood springs up on Fifth Avenue
US has the highest rate of gun-related deaths in more than 25 years, new CDC data shows
(CNN) Far too often, Dr. Debra Houry found herself covered in blood. As an emergency physician in the United States for about 20 years, Houry said, it was a "frequent occurrence" to treat young men in the emergency room for gunshot wounds. They often would "bleed out" on her as she was resuscitating them. Then she would search the hospital for a clean white coat to wear "so that I'd look respectable and presentable to talk to their families -- or to somebody that did survive but then was paralyzed or had traumatic stress as a result of it," Houry said. "That was heartbreaking." The rate of gun-related deaths in the US appears to be getting worse.
