REUTERS/Hamad I Mohammed/Pool SAO PAULO—Lewis Hamilton called for action to change “archaic mindsets” after a racist remark about him by Brazilian triple champion Nelson Piquet emerged on social media, triggering widespread condemnation. In a Brazilian interview on YouTube in November, Piquet, 69, used a racial slur when referring to the seven-time world champion, when commenting on Hamilton’s British Grand Prix crash with Max Verstappen . He also said Hamilton had “played dirty” in the incident. Piquet’s daughter Kelly is Verstappen’s partner, and the comments resurfaced as the drivers prepare to return to Silverstone this weekend. Hamilton, who was recently awarded honorary Brazilian citizenship and is the sport’s only Black driver, responded on Twitter. “It’s more than language. These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport,” the Mercedes driver said. “I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole … [Read more...] about F1: Lewis Hamilton calls for action amid storm over racist Piquet comment

Thai PM makes bizarre ‘go easy on me’ plea to media
Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday made a bizarre appeal to the nation’s press to “go easy” and give him a fair crack of the whip. The 68 year old prime minister made the plea after a recent poll put him in fourth position as potential picks to be Thailand’s next prime minister, a long way behind the daughter of former PM and political enemy, Thaksin Shinawatra. The youngest daughter of the former PM, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, headed the NIDA poll with 25.3% of respondents approval, ‘No one’ was the second choice with 18.7%, 13.2% favoured Pita Limjaroenrat, the current leader of the opposition Move Forward Party, and Prayut came fourth with 11.7% of the vote. Prayut dismissed the survey saying the poll only reflects the opinion of certain people (NIDA claimed the poll was conducted last week among 2,500 people of various ages, occupations and education levels). Prayut says people should judge a candidate based on their performance at work, adding his administration has had to … [Read more...] about Thai PM makes bizarre ‘go easy on me’ plea to media
What To Expect For July 4th Gas Prices
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Gas prices are steadily but slowly dropping ahead of July Fourth and further relief at the pump may be coming ahead of one the most popular driving days of the year, though prices are still elevated compared to 2021. Key Facts The average national gas price Monday is $4.897 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association, which is down 12 cents from its peak of $5.016 on June 14. Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, predicted Sunday the national average for gas prices could fall to as low as $4.75 by July Fourth as crude oil prices fall. That would still represent a more than 50% increase from last July Fourth, when the national average gallon of gas was $3.13, per AAA. Still, AAA forecasts a record-high 42 million Americans will travel 50-plus miles over the holiday weekend – a telling sign as demand for gas remains largely unfazed by the historic … [Read more...] about What To Expect For July 4th Gas Prices
Why Female Entrepreneurs Welcome The End Of The Girlboss Era—Once And For All
The resignation of Glossier CEO Emily Weiss inspired another wave of obituaries for young, female founders. Nevertheless, they persist—and refuse to be put on glass pedestals again. I n October 2021, Rent the Runway cofounder Jennifer Hyman took her 12-year-old subscription fashion company public at a $1.7 billion valuation, valuing her 5.1% stake at nearly $49 million. The 41-year-old CEO was one of only about 25 American women in history to go public with a company she had founded. But Rent the Runway’s IPO was even more unusual for not only having a female founder but also a female CFO and a female COO. Hyman celebrated the moment on a flowery Nasdaq podium surrounded by the key women on her team, her two daughters and a shower of pink confetti. But for all the femininity on stage, there is one word that Hyman would not use to mark the moment: “Girlboss.” “We've created a false narrative because we looked at two or three examples of women who were building businesses … [Read more...] about Why Female Entrepreneurs Welcome The End Of The Girlboss Era—Once And For All

Seahawks hold off Washington, clinch NFL playoff berth
Running back Carlos Hyde #30 of the Seattle Seahawks rushes for a third quarter touchdown against the Washington Football Team at FedExField on December 20, 2020 in Landover, Maryland. Patrick Smith/Getty Images/AFP The Seattle Seahawks punched their NFL playoff ticket on Sunday, rushing for 181 yards and thwarting a late Washington rally in a 20-15 victory. Seattle is back in the postseason for the ninth time in 11 seasons under coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks appeared to be cruising toward victory when they took a 20-3 lead early in the third quarter. Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and quarterback Russell Wilson all topped 50 yards rushing. Hyde scored one of the Seahawks’ two touchdowns on a 50-yard run and Wilson connected with tight end Jacob Hollister on the other. Inflation saps US consumer confidence; house prices remain elevated
- A + A WASHINGTON (June 28): US consumer confidence dropped to a 16-month low in June, as worries about high inflation left consumers to anticipate that the economy would slow significantly or even slide into recession in the second half of the year. Despite the gloomy outlook, consumers showed little sign of cutting back on spending, with buying plans for motor vehicles and other big ticket items like refrigerators and washing machines increasing, the survey from the Conference Board on Tuesday showed. But fewer consumers compared to April intended to go away on vacation at home or abroad, reflecting record high gasoline prices and expensive airfares. The economy is on recession watch as the Federal Reserve aggressively tightens monetary policy to tackle inflation. For now, it continues to grow, with other data on Tuesday showing the goods trade deficit again narrowing significantly in May as exports hit a record high. "Right now we are at an inflection point in … [Read more...] about Inflation saps US consumer confidence; house prices remain elevated
