Work at the former Hanjin shipbuilding facility at the Subic Bay Freeport will resume under its new operator and skilled workers, who were displaced when it closed down in 2017, have started getting their jobs back. (Contributed photo) SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Officials of Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) have ensured a “smooth transition” in the former Hanjin shipyard, which went bankrupt in 2017, as some of the displaced workers of the facility have already been hired by the new operator. Rolen Paulino, chair and administrator of SBMA, on Monday (May 23) said the massive shipyard, now called Agila Subic, would house two tenants. One of the tenants, Vectrus, would be occupying most of the shipbuilding area of the facility, including the quays, Paulino said in a statement. When It Pays to Have an Ugly Website
When Wikipedia revealed its massive website redesign last week, not everyone was thrilled. One reader called the new columns "ludicrously narrow," while another said an image surrounded by white space was "a really bad idea." The larger font and pictures looked nice, but Wikipedia's users liked the old site design , thank you very much--the one that hasn't changed much since the site launched in 2001. Craigslist is another example of a site that refuses to update its look and feel. It relies on email to correspond with users, even in the era of SMS and social networks, and has rarely, if ever, changed its text-heavy design. You can add Drudge Report and Amazon to the same list. These sites might be ignoring design innovation but they seem to be doing just fine. "The desire to redesign or change often comes from the internal people wanting to mix it up or remind people they're out there ," says designer Shane Mielke, who's worked on campaigns for Mazda and Call of … [Read more...] about When It Pays to Have an Ugly Website

Bourgogne Grapples With Fighting Frost Without Producing Emissions
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It was late afternoon on April’s first Sunday in Bourgogne. Cold. Overcast. Fierce winds driving the chill into my bones. Braving the elements was necessary for an homage visit to sacred land—Romanée Conti climat, in the commune of Vosne-Romanée. Surprisingly, the vineyards were bustling with activity. Frost threat had dedicated workers installing a host of prevention techniques throughout the region. The following day smoke and soot filled the air from Saint-Aubin to Morey-St. Denis. Small fires dotted the landscape. Large candles on sentry duty lined vineyard rows as far as the eye could see. In an effort to avoid catastrophic losses, like in 2021, Bourgogne wineries employ a wide range of active frost prevention techniques. From torches and heated wooden cauldrons, paraffin candles, burning vine clippings, portable wind machines, and even helicopters, each of these choices produce carbon emissions. In seeking … [Read more...] about Bourgogne Grapples With Fighting Frost Without Producing Emissions
