Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Rising prices at the grocery store have many of us paying more attention to the cost of our food, and how systems that feel outside of our control influence those prices. While it can be challenging to convey or grasp the scope of the world’s food system, one organization is taking this concept to the supermarket shelves by showing people the actual cost of some items on the shelves — from the land used to grow produce, to the growers who provide it, to the businesses that bring it to the shelves — and raising awareness of the need for economic and agriculture reforms. Many food businesses maintain a focus on maximizing their margins for profit, but some companies are realizing the implications of their actions and adopting practices to protect the future of the planet and people. To help these companies, Michel Scholte co-founded True Price , a Netherlands-based organization that aims to reduce food insecurity and shape a … [Read more...] about What’s The True Cost Of Your Food? The Challenges The Indiana Pacers Face In Keeping Jalen Smith
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Center Jalen Smith played the best basketball of his career for the Indiana Pacers this past season, and that might actually end up being a problem for the Pacers franchise. Smith was acquired by Indiana in a deal at the trade deadline back in February — the Pacers sent away Torrey Craig when they received Smith and draft compensation from the Phoenix Suns in a financially-motivated move. The trade was a win for everyone — the Pacers, the Suns, Craig, and Smith. Smith was a winner because he went to an Indiana team that was far more focused on developing young players than his previous squad in Phoenix. During his first season-and-a-half with the Suns, there were just 18 times in which Smith played more than ten minutes in a game. With the Pacers in under two months, that occurred 22 times. The Pacers had more opportunities for the young big, which was beneficial for his growth. “I view this as a new beginning,” … [Read more...] about The Challenges The Indiana Pacers Face In Keeping Jalen Smith
San Francisco 49ers Target Special Teams In Series Of Cost-Effective Moves
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The San Francisco 49ers added their one big-ticket item in free agency early during the process, signing Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward to a three-year, $40.5 million contract . This addressed a major area of need for general manager John Lynch and Co. However, some fans have been thrown off by San Francisco’s lack of urgency in free agency despite the team not having a ton of cap room . With high-priced quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still on the books, these 49ers used their limited financial assets to upgrade a troubled area — special teams. That includes bringing in three core special teams players in linebacker Oren Burks, wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud and safety George Odum on team-friendly deals. For San Francisco, it’s all about upgrading a special teams unit that struggled big time a season ago before coming through in the team’s NFC Divisional Playoff win over the Green Bay Packers. … [Read more...] about San Francisco 49ers Target Special Teams In Series Of Cost-Effective Moves

Why didn’t Marshall fire homeowners have enough insurance? Watchdogs blame industry software.
In 2021, a Louisville couple bought $419,000 worth of insurance coverage for their home, based on their agent’s recommendation. Now, that policy payout is only providing about half of what they need to rebuild the house they lost in the Marshall fire. In a lawsuit filed this summer, the couple blamed their agent, their insurer and the company that built the software their agent used to tell them how much coverage they needed. They’re not alone in finding fault with the software. Industry watchdogs, including Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway, say the computer programs used by insurance companies to provide replacement cost estimates to homeowners are a problem because they consistently underestimate how much families need after they lose their homes in natural disasters. Conway said he identified the issue while investigating complaints after the Marshall fire, the Dec. 30 conflagration that destroyed more than 1,000 homes in Boulder County. He said he hopes … [Read more...] about Why didn’t Marshall fire homeowners have enough insurance? Watchdogs blame industry software.
Making quality and cheaper medicines a reality for Filipinos
Please allow us to share our insights on the editorial “Cheaper medicines for all” (8/11/22). As the editorial accurately stated, the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) supports the priority agenda of President Marcos Jr. to foster vibrant competition in the pharmaceutical industry. We share in the goal to ignite competition as the primary means to lower medicine prices. The entry of generic manufacturers into the country will spur more competition that can drive prices down and give treatment options to government, physicians, and patients. India’s experience as “the pharmacy of the world” can help boost the production of generic medicines in the country. For the country to fully benefit from their successful production experience, we need to also consider that medicines still account for 69 percent of household out-of-pocket spending in health care in India. This suggests that there remains a need to prioritize “solutions that will require quality … [Read more...] about Making quality and cheaper medicines a reality for Filipinos

Overcoming Infrastructure Obstacles For An All-Electric Fleet
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Head of Product L-Charge –the developer of grid-independent ultra-fast charging solutions that work on clean fuels. Even though the discussion about the benefits of electric transport is more than a decade old, the proportion of electric vehicles in the global corporate fleet is still surprisingly small. According to the IEA's Global Electric Vehicle Outlook 2022 , electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) make up just 2% of the global fleet of this kind. Fully electric vehicles make up 4% of the global fleet of buses and 0.1% of heavy-duty trucks. The LCV share barely exceeds 12%, even in advanced markets. As head of product for an EV charging solution developer, and having done my share of research on the global market, I find the reason for this modest penetration to be the poor infrastructure and services supporting the commercial EV market–charging, support infrastructure and service businesses. Why … [Read more...] about Overcoming Infrastructure Obstacles For An All-Electric Fleet
