Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With the United States Supreme Court apparently poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade’s protection for abortion access, some court watchers warn that protections for LGBTQ+ rights could be next. According to a recently released survey of 520 Americans who identify as LGBTQ+, many already face discrimination in the healthcare space. The survey , conducted by health insurance website HealthCare.com, included 520 respondents, 40% of whom identified as bisexual, 30% as gay, 12% as lesbian, and 18% as something else, such as transgender, pansexual, questioning, or queer. One in eight LGBTQ+ Americans surveyed said they have experienced discrimination from their health insurance provider. Among subgroups, such as people who identify as transgender or bisexual, it may be even higher, though the samples sizes for these subgroups were not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions. Younger people were more likely to report … [Read more...] about 1 In 8 LGBTQ+ Americans Face Health Insurance Discrimination, New Survey Shows

Do Annuities Make Sense For Anyone?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There seems to be a lot of confusion about whether annuities are good or bad. Some of it stems from viewing the product as complex and too time-consuming to study and understand. But I don’t see annuities being any more complicated than other financial products. For example, one type of annuity is simply like a pension, and there’s almost no one who thinks a pension is bad. Annuities are a type of insurance product. By purchasing one, you’re transferring risk to the insurance company just as you do with home, auto, or life insurance coverage. With annuity products, the insurer is assuming some, if not all, of the longevity or market risk and charging a fee doing so. Risk mitigation is common to all types of annuity products, yet they differ markedly in other ways. Variable Annuities When people talk about contract complexity and high fees, they’re usually referring to variable annuities. I find these products are … [Read more...] about Do Annuities Make Sense For Anyone?
Biden’s New Student Loan Forgiveness Changes May Wind Up Costing Some Borrowers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Biden administration is in the process of implementing significant new federal student loan forgiveness initiatives. These programs may ultimately help millions of borrowers get closer to having their student loans cancelled. But depending on the specific program and the exact timing of that loan forgiveness, some borrowers may wind up getting hit with a surprise penalty: extra taxes. Biden Makes Big Changes To Key Student Loan Forgiveness and Repayment Programs In April, the Biden administration announced historic reforms to federal student loan income-driven repayment (IDR) programs , which include Income Based Repayment (IBR), Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE), and other plans. IDR plans allow federal student loan borrowers to make payments based on their income and family size. After 20 or 25 years in the program (depending on the specific plan), any remaining balance can be forgiven. IDR plans have … [Read more...] about Biden’s New Student Loan Forgiveness Changes May Wind Up Costing Some Borrowers
A Gun Maker Reveals What Trump’s Presidency Means For His Business
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At Daniel Defense , a Black Creek, GA-based manufacturer of AR-15 semi-automatic rifles and accessories, founder Marty Daniel saw sales spike last year when it looked like Hillary Clinton would win the presidency. Though he supports Donald Trump, his customers aren’t buying as many firearms now that they have a National Rifle Association supporter in the White House. But Daniel, 54, sees a promising long-term future for gun makers. He’s weathered sales surges and dips since he founded the company in 2001 after inventing a custom attachment for his Colt rifle and selling extra pieces online. At a 2002 gun show, he was discovered by a rep for U.S. Special Forces, which wound up signing a $20 million contract. Daniel Defense has since grown into one of the country’s largest privately held producers of guns and accessories, with $73 million in 2016 sales, a gross profit margin of 35% and 279 employees. In this interview, which has … [Read more...] about A Gun Maker Reveals What Trump’s Presidency Means For His Business
How SuperCircle Is Changing Fashion And Climate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin 85% of our wardrobes go to waste, likely without the intent to recycle them, and our disposed clothing ends up in landfills. These include items we may have thought went on to be recycled - in some sustainable way. The complex and intricate problem of garment recycling has sparked SuperCircle , the tech and reverse logistics platform that bridges the gap between retail and textile waste through innovative business relationships that scale the recyclability of discarded textiles. “We always had this intention of, and this realization very early, even before the launch of [ Thousand Fell ]. You can design for circularity but you really need to build this engine to power circularity. And that is the unsexy stuff - the take-back, logistics, and tech. What SuperCircle is and the way we describe it is the tech and logistics infrastructure to link the retail brands with the waste management industry” states SuperCircle … [Read more...] about How SuperCircle Is Changing Fashion And Climate

SPACs Look Like a Bubble Within a Bubble
While we have talked about the general froth in the initial public offering (IPO) market, it is time to focus on one of the major drivers – special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). SPAC IPOs accounted for over half of all IPOs in 2020 and are already set to make up a majority in quarter one of 2021. This is a cause for worry in the market and, more importantly, for investors who may get caught bearing the real costs of a SPAC. We'll look at the why and how of SPACs, as well as why the odds seem tilted against individual investors realizing a good return. Key Takeaways The IPO market has been frothy of late, with tech offerings seeing huge jumps in first-day trading. Within this IPO market, SPACs are making up a larger share of new offerings. This means that more and more money is hitting the market with a plan to find something to buy. SPACs give creators and sponsors structural advantages that later investors don't have, making the decision for retail … [Read more...] about SPACs Look Like a Bubble Within a Bubble
How to Improve Your Ambition, From 5 Achievers
Ambition . It gets things done. Most Inc. readers have it. Some wish they had more. Many hide theirs. Too many, if you ask me. Like determination , resilience, self-awareness , and grit , among other properties, successful people have it and unsuccessful ones make excuses for lacking it. A panel of experts I recently attended a panel the Harlem WeWorks on ambition of successful, ambitious people who have accomplished a lot early in their careers. They include a TED resident, an award-winning Broadway dancer and actor, a Marvel artist, MakerBot's General Cousel, and the podcaster who brought them together. To call each an entrepreneur is an understatement. I asked each, after the panel: What was the most useful advice or insight on ambition that you shared at the event?
