How ChopValue Is Creating A Supercool Sustainable Design Brand Using The Humble Chopstick
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When I first heard about Chopvalue , a circular economy furniture and design company that used the humble chopstick as sustainable and reusable resource, I couldn’t help but think it was a gimmick. US business borrowing for equipment rises 16% in May — ELFA
- A + A (June 23): U.S. companies borrowed 16% more in May to finance their investments in equipment compared to a year earlier, the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) said on Thursday, as firms ramp up production to meet demand. The companies signed up for $9.4 billion in new loans, leases and lines of credit, compared with $8.1 billion a year earlier. "The economy continues to provide jobs and corporate America, in general, reports strong balance sheets - all in the face of a waning health pandemic," Ralph Petta, ELFA's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Offsetting this good news is high inflation, creating havoc for many consumers, and continued supply chain disruptions and higher interest rates", Petta added. ELFA, which reports economic activity for the nearly $1-trillion equipment finance sector, said credit approvals totaled 76.8%, down from 77.4% in April. The sustained rising interest rate environment, a pandemic overhang and … [Read more...] about US business borrowing for equipment rises 16% in May — ELFA
Storyboard18 | How can we make sustainable travel mainstream?
Eighty-eight percent of Indian travellers surveyed said they would be more likely to choose a sustainable accommodation - whether they were looking specifically for one or not. (Representational image: Caroline Selfers via Unsplash) The pandemic has certainly accelerated the awakening of the traveller mindset and pushed towards more conscious, responsible travel in India. Beyond just buzzwords or jargon, the sustainable traveller should now be a keen consideration for accommodation and hospitality providers. But does the common traveller understand what it means to travel sustainably? To put it simply, it’s about keeping destinations healthy and happy, leaving the places we visit better than how we found them. It isn’t just a buzzword but a conscientious approach in terms of how travel can positively impact local communities from a social, economic, health and cultural perspective. With travel picking up and many starting to explore the world again, they are looking forward … [Read more...] about Storyboard18 | How can we make sustainable travel mainstream?
Maybank IB expects transition finance to gain traction in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Transition finance or labelled bonds and loans are expected to gain traction in the coming years amid a growing number of companies pledging to reach sustainable goals, Maybank Investment Bank said. Maybank Investment Bank chief executive officer Datuk Fad’l Mohamed said transition finance is a relatively new addition to the suite of sustainable finance instruments to help companies deliver long-term strategies to achieve their net-zero carbon commitments. He said the potential investments that fell under transition bonds as opposed to green bonds are a lot larger as the former includes industries that are not readily green but are taking steps to decarbonise. "So, in this instance, for example, ship company Seaspan Corporation has raised about US$750 million (US$1=RM4.39) in transition bond this year and the proceed were channelled towards exploring energy efficiency of its vessels with alternative fuels,” he said at the Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) … [Read more...] about Maybank IB expects transition finance to gain traction in Malaysia
As Guyana’s Oil Business Booms, Could A Potential New Deal With Exxon Loom?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Emily Pickrell, UH Energy Scholar The tiny South American country of Guyana has been transformative for Exxon Mobil Corp. in the last decade, after the oil titan made the first of a series of gigantic discoveries just off its coast. As the country moves into its new role as a prolific oil producer, it’s time for it to now take the helm in managing these relationships. Indeed, its current arrangement with Exxon and partners — Hess and Chinese CNOOC — reveals the story of a country that was new to the game and inexperienced in negotiations several years ago. This team first found oil in Guyana seven years ago and has since made an astonishing 18 oil discoveries in its giant Guyanese Stabroek block. These discoveries contain generous fossil fuel wealth: nearly 11 billion barrels of recoverable oil and gas potential and counting, following the latest spate of new discoveries in April. Exxon and its … [Read more...] about As Guyana’s Oil Business Booms, Could A Potential New Deal With Exxon Loom?

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Ever since I walked into Naadam’s store in Hudson Yards (in pre-pandemic New York), I have been a complete fan of this supercool, sustainable Mongolian cashmere brand. I caught up with the amiable and articulate Cofounder Matt Scanlan to find out more about his insane journey that started with getting lost in the Gobi desert, $3 million cash in plastic bags and 150 tonnes of cashmere. For Part One of this article, please click here . Afdhel Aziz: Wow. So, there are so many questions I have right now. Let me try to unpack a few of them. How did it change how you were able to help the tribesmen? Matt Scanlan: The reality is we're helping so many more people that we feel like we're literally changing the economic circumstances for regions of nomadic Mongolians. You go to some of the areas where we're purchasing, and there are schools and playgrounds and hospitals and roads. We build parks. We bring … [Read more...] about How Naadam Created A $100 Million+ Sustainable Luxury Cashmere Brand That Is Helping Mongolian Communities (Part Two)
Can A River Be Too Big To Fail? Why The Mississippi River Needs A National Lab
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Nearly 30 percent of Americans live in the Mississippi River Basin . Water from 31 states and two Canadian provinces ultimately makes its way into the Mississippi . Because of its size and reach, from shipping and agriculture to commercial fishing and tourism, calculating the economic impact of the Mississippi River Basin is almost impossible. Yet the river that in many ways is America’s central nervous system is in serious trouble. Rain falling on farmlands and pastures picks up chemical fertilizers as it flows into the Mississippi and its tributaries. Deforestation and poorly planned development sends sediment and pollutants from urban centers into the water. Climate change is altering water temperature and seasonal patterns of flooding and low water, which is in turn erratically increasing demand for water for irrigation and municipal use. And don’t forget about dredging, channeling and dams to produce power and control … [Read more...] about Can A River Be Too Big To Fail? Why The Mississippi River Needs A National Lab
43 People Changing Advertising For The Climate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This week is the Cannes Lions Festival Of Creativity - the huge annual jamboree for the advertising and PR industry. Sustainability is one of the main themes, but change isn’t easy for an industry based on selling more stuff to more people. Advertising plays a pivotal role in climate change. On one hand, advertising defends the destructive oil and gas industry, greenwashes brands and drives consumption. As the recent IPCC report put it: “A good number of corporate agents have attempted to derail climate mitigation by targeted lobbying and doubt-inducing media strategies.” But on the other hand, the power of creativity and storytelling could change the course of climate change. The IPCC also made clear that: “Socio-cultural changes within transition pathways can offer Gigaton-scale CO2 savings potential at the global level” In non-geek speak…The IPCC is saying that culture eats climate for breakfast! The … [Read more...] about 43 People Changing Advertising For The Climate
