Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Inflation and the attempt to offset it with higher interest rates is impacting almost all areas of the economy and people’s everyday life. In the world of business sales, where the leverage and financing of deals play a vital role, one would think that the potential repercussions of accelerating interest rates will be enormous and disastrous. While I understand that thinking, I do not agree. Of course, there will be the usual nay-sayers who decide they cannot move forward to buy a business now because interest rates are rising. These are almost certainly the same folks who cannot pull the trigger on buying a business no matter the state of the economy. Business buyers simply need to get used to a new basis. The low interest rates we have experienced in recent years were not always the case, and businesses did not stop selling. Anyone who wants to buy or sell a business needs to block out the noise, adapt, and adjust their … [Read more...] about Why Interest Rates Will Not Impact The Business For Sale Market

Kenanga cuts earnings forecast for Kerjaya Prospek, lowers target price to RM1.42
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): Kenanga Research has maintained its “Outperform” rating on Kerjaya Prospek Group Bhd at RM1.10 with a lower target price (TP) of RM1.42 (from RM1.50) and said it reduced its FY22E/FY23E earnings forecasts for Kerjaya by 14%/6% and lower the SoP-TP to RM1.42 (previously RM1.50) anchored to unchanged construction PER of 11x – a 40% discount over the sector leader’s ascribed PER of 18x given Kerjaya’s orderbook profile that is skewed towards building works (of which prospects are weighed down by supply overhang). 5 Ways To Be A Better Leader During A Crisis
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Anjan Pathak For any aspiring leader, going through a crisis is a rite of passage. After all, it's easy to be a good manager when everything is going well, but your ability as a leader is truly tested when there is a true crisis. While crisis management may be near the top of a manager's priority list, it is one of the trickiest areas to navigate. Thus, it's not surprising that crisis preparation for a company can cost anywhere from $60,000 to $500,000 (depending on the industry and location). In comparison, unprepared companies in a crisis can spend close to millions of dollars on mitigation while at the same time losing hundreds of millions in reputation and shareholder value. The real issue with crisis management is that it is incredibly unpredictable. You never know when or what kind of crisis will strike. Consider the Covid-19 pandemic. If someone had told us in 2019 that the world would be in a two-year … [Read more...] about 5 Ways To Be A Better Leader During A Crisis
Exclusive: Inside Target’s top secret test store
When she was a little girl, Erika De Salvatore fantasized about being locked in a mall when everyone else had gone home. She’d seen the 1980s rom-com Mannequin , and, after that, she imagined having free reign over the commercial space, exploring storefronts full of products after the lights went dim. advertisement advertisement As we stroll around a huge, mostly empty retail space, she laughs about how she’s now living that fantasy. De Salvatore is the VP of visual merchandising at Target. And this is her domain: A 100,000-square-foot test store that takes up a full city block in downtown Minneapolis. You could wander here for hours and never see another soul. I was the first member of the press to set foot inside the store while reporting a story on Target’s new Made By Design collection . Opened in 2017, it’s a place where Target’s designers, visual merchandisers, executives, and retail partners can all convene to see what products will look … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Inside Target’s top secret test store
Behind Ace Hotel Founder Alex Calderwood’s Creative Life And Untimely Death
You know the place, even if you haven’t been there. advertisement advertisement From the outside, it has a spare, severe look. But inside, past the flower stall and barbershop, the vibe is serene and hushed. Long tables and worn leather chairs invite people to cluster; the scent of locally roasted coffee mixes with the sound of the nearby photo booth, whirring in the background. There are vintage records on the shelves and slinky indie pop on the speakers, and the late afternoon sunlight makes puddles on the century-old wood floor. The feeling is both of the moment and timeless. To a remarkable extent, this place, the Ace Hotel, is the brainchild of a single man, a lean, mop-haired native of the Pacific Northwest named Alexander Calderwood. A kind of hipster polymath, he was able to look around the corners of culture and see what was coming years, if not decades, before everyone else. In his 20-year career, Calderwood cofounded a barbershop, a … [Read more...] about Behind Ace Hotel Founder Alex Calderwood’s Creative Life And Untimely Death
Japan braces for power crunch as heat rises with end of rains
Passersby are seen through a heat haze during hot weather at Sugamo district in Tokyo, Japan June 27, 2022. - A + A TOKYO (June 27): Japan scrambled on Monday to avert a looming power crunch as temperatures climbed nationwide, with authorities warning of higher than expected demand after the rainy season ended in the capital, Tokyo, at its earliest since record-keeping began. Less than two weeks ahead of an election for the upper house of parliament, surging electrical prices are making life tougher for Japanese customers, following higher fuel costs brought by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A power shortage could batter the fortunes of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), already under fire for its handling of higher consumer prices. "Electricity demand has been staying above yesterday's forecast since this morning, amid unseasonably intense heat," an official of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry told a news conference, adding that demand had … [Read more...] about Japan braces for power crunch as heat rises with end of rains

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 27, 2022 - July 03, 2022. - A + A EVEN as we transition from the Covid-19 pandemic to endemicity, the world is facing a new set of economic challenges, the biggest of which would surely be an impending recession and fast-rising inflation. Stagflation has become a real threat. So, how should we navigate these challenges and age successfully in the post-Covid-19 world? Danny Wong, CEO of Areca Capital Sdn Bhd, advises that retirees who do not have an active income stream and invest conservatively should recalculate their expected returns to ensure they have enough to sustain their lifestyle ahead. Retirees without an active income, he stresses, should keep an eye on the real interest rate — which is the interest rate that takes inflation into account — as most invest conservatively in fixed deposits and investment-grade bonds with low risk and lower returns. For instance, the country’s … [Read more...] about The Edge Third Age Economy Symposium 2022: Challenges of preparing for retirement in a post-pandemic world
The ultimate guide to purposeful productivity (your mental health will thank you)
Have you ever looked at another person’s daily accomplishments and thought, “How do they do it”? By the time most are pouring a second cup of coffee in the morning, some super-achievers have gone for a 5-mile run, hit inbox zero, and nailed the rough draft of that report due next week. Oh, and they figured out the day’s Wordle, too. advertisement advertisement After more than a decade of writing and practicing productivity techniques, I’ve learned that these folks generally do know more about how to get more done. And you can adopt those practices, too. But, why would you? Getting more done in less time can mean that you have more free time to do the things you love with the people you love.
