Snowflake ( NYSE:SNOW ) launched the largest software IPO ever in September 2020. The cloud-based data warehousing company went public at $120 per share, started trading at $245, and hit an all-time high of $405 a share last November. But over the past two months, Snowflake's stock price tumbled nearly 30% as rising interest rates sparked a rotation away from pricier, unprofitable, and speculative growth stocks. Snowflake checked all three boxes. Should investors consider buying some shares of Snowflake after that big pullback? Let's review the bear and bull cases to decide. Image source: Getty Images. What the bears will say about Snowflake The bears will claim that Snowflake's cloud-based warehousing platform, which pulls data from multiple computing platforms and centralizes the results for third-party services, isn't as disruptive as it sounds. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke recently made headlines for berating the idea that “companies are families” in a leaked internal email. “Preposterous” was the word he used, before going on to declare Shopify a “team,” not a family. A lot of people agree with this line of thinking, popularized by Netflix ’s Culture Slide deck. In fact, I was another CEO who used to preach to my colleagues, “We’re a team, not a family.” But I changed my mind recently. Because the truth is, culture isn't binary. The Competing Values Framework The Competing Values Framework divides organizational cultures into four categories based on the following factors: whether an organization is more internally focused or externally focused, and the degree to which it values flexibility and individual discretion or stability and control. Companies that value flexibility and are externally focused are said to have “adhocracy” cultures. These … [Read more...] about What The ‘Team Vs. Family’ Debate Gets Wrong About Company Culture
As the world becomes more digitally connected, enterprises are increasingly depending on data to deliver value. In turn, data-guru companies Snowflake ( NYSE:SNOW ) and Palantir Technologies ( NYSE:PLTR ) have garnered a lot of attention from Wall Street. However, following a heavy sell-off in technology stocks in the final months of 2021, both companies have retreated from prior gains despite impressive growth. Let's dig in and see which software leader may serve as a better long-term investment for investors. Data is the new oil Snowflake and Palantir operate overlapping markets and aim to help solve the same issues. Namely, both companies create software tools that allow enterprises to derive data-driven insights from disparate systems. According to research from IDC, over 80% of enterprise data will be unstructured by 2025 . This means that customer records housed in a customer relationship management (CRM) system or financial data stored in an enterprise resource … [Read more...] about Better Buy: Palantir vs. Snowflake

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Luminar stock , a company that develops lidar sensors for use in self-driving cars, has declined by roughly 15% over the last week (five trading days), underperforming the S&P 500 which was down by about 4%. The stock also remains down by about 17% over the last month. There are likely a couple of factors driving the recent sell-off. Firstly, Luminar issued about $550 million worth of convertible debt last month, while buying back around $250 million of its stock. It’s possible that investors are a bit concerned about these transactions given that the company hasn’t started meaningful commercial operations yet, with profitability and positive cash flows likely several years away. Separately, electric vehicle stocks, in general, have underperformed the market in recent weeks, due to rising bond yields and this could also be hurting Luminar. For perspective, EV bellwether Tesla stock is down by about 17% year-to-date in 2022. … [Read more...] about Why Luminar Stock May See Lower Levels Going Forward
