Julian Edelman arrived in Foxborough in 2009 as a hardly known seventh-round draft pick, a college quarterback attempting to reinvent himself as a kick returner and backup wide receiver under former Patriot Wes Welker, who carved out a distinct role for slot receivers in the Patriots’ offense. A decade later, Edelman, 32, is one of the faces of the franchise. He has excelled in the slot receiver role after succeeding Welker when he left for the Denver Broncos after the 2012 season. Edelman was named the MVP of Super Bowl LIII, where he racked up 10 receptions for 141 yards against the Rams on his way to becoming only the seventh wide receiver to win the award — and just the second Patriot not named Tom Brady to win the honor (Deion Branch won the award in Super Bowl XXXIX). The Los Angeles Rams opened as 1-point favourites over the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl LIII. When the game became available, bets immediately poured in on the New England, swinging the line 3.5 points to make the Patriots 2.5-point favourites. As things stand, more than 80% of the money bet on the game has been on the Patriots, but Las Vegas isn’t worried about the lopsided action – yet. The 49ers have 40-1 odds to win Super Bowl LIV in Miami in 2020, according to BetOnline.ag. Only 11 teams have longer odds than the 49ers, who share 40-1 chances with the Jaguars and Giants. Of note for the dynastic Patriots, who are managing to play the everyone-thinks-we-stink card before the AFC Championship Game in Kansas City on Sunday: The Chiefs have the best odds (7-1) and the Patriots are a 10-1 shot.
